022. those who aren't ready.

⸻ OIKAWA TOORU WAS AWARE HE WAS RUNNING OUT OF TIME, he knew that at some point he had to visit [name] at least one more time before she left for college. the unconditional guilt that pooled oikawa's stomach was making him sick and it didn't make matters better when he opened tadame's front door slightly to the sight of the next door neighbor talking to his sister.

his heart dropped and he couldn't help but run from the door as fast as possible, pushing himself onto the closest chair. brown eyes wide, hands sweating as if they were melting, the young coach stared at his knees in discomfort. should he walk out and talk to her? was it even time? surely, there was no better time than the present but— was he even ready?

he obviously wasn't if his first instinct was to run, so after careful deciding, he sunk into this seat he sat in while his hands clawed at his face in shame.

the sound of the door shutting made his body jump and his head lift up instantly and turn to the front of the small home in anticipation. he stared until his brown-haired sister appeared walking down the hall with a sympathetic smile on her face, the same smile she had been giving him for the past couple of weeks.

"how're you feeling?"

her question rang in his ears and his hands fell on top of each other, rubbing at his pajama pants. how was he feeling? that was a hard question to answer without going on a complete ramble about the guilts in his chest and the regrets he held dear to him ever since last month.

"i'm fine," he decided was the appropriate answer, pale thumbs brushing against the silly ufo patterned pants for comfort, "how is she?"

tadame let out a hum, turning her head to oikawa as if she needed him to repeat, but then answered his question before he could ask again, "oh, she's doing well… she asked about you though."

it was obvious to the young man that she would ask about him, but he didn't think his sister would tell him so easily. maybe she said it to motivate him to talk to her in a way, to hint to him that it was okay because maybe she wanted to talk to him about it as well— but even with the hints, oikawa still couldn't get it through his head.

he shut the door behind him, hands falling into his hoodie pockets while walking past the gate of his older sister's home. a yawn escaped his lips and his shoulders rolled back as he walked down the small alleyway as quick as possible in an attempt to avoid [name] or anyone associated with her, but per usual, lady luck wasn't on his side again.

with his head facing the ground, he noticed the shoulder before him that fell stiff instead of getting bigger whilst approaching him. instead, the shadow had froze and caused him to look up anxiously.

there stood semi eita.

the two stared at each other and for a split second oikawa had felt grateful that it wasn't [name] until the realization that it was her ex-boyfriend hit, and when it hit, it hit like a truck. as if oikawa couldn't feel even more dreadful, there stood the male who broke the heart of the girl he loved but also the male who had dumped her because of him.

"what're you doing here?" semi's question was aggressive almost, as if trying to pick a fight due to his own assumptions.

"visiting my sister," oikawa responded almost instantly. he didn't bother to ask why semi was towards this area, it was obvious to the young man. it was more than obvious actually and it felt like he couldn't get away from all the constant guilt that day.

he was unsure if he should just walk away just to avoid yet another one of his conflicts, but his feet felt weighed down by an anchor and he couldn't find himself to move. part of him wanted to see where things would lead up to, but he was more than desperate to run home.

"do you know if [name] is home?"

"how would i know?'

it was silent again, just oikawa and semi eita standing in the alleyway in complete and utter silence. semi's hands were sitting in his pockets as balled up fists, his anger slowly getting to the best of him at the sight of the guy who, quite frankly, ruined his three year relationship in such little time.

on the other hand, oikawa was feeling absolutely awkward. was semi there to try and get back together with [name]? if he was, would she take him back? the young man was aware of how much the heartbroken teenager missed him, he had listened to her cry for days because of him, so he wouldn't be surprised if the two of them got back together so soon.

he didn't care, though. he couldn't bring himself to ask why he had arrived nor could he bring himself to try to continue some sort of conversation with him because of his desperation to walk away and the anxiety pooling over him. oikawa knew he had fought for her for so long, but now, he didn't want to fight as hard. oikawa was exhausted and all he wanted was to go home and bury himself in his bed forever.

"well, i'll see her some other time then," the chocolate brown-haired males thoughts were interrupted, head lifting to see semi turn and walk back towards the direction he had came from with his body hunched slightly over and his hands rummaging through his pockets to shove his earbuds in.

the setter stared as he walked away, watching as he disappeared from his sight before turning around slightly in the direction of his sister's home and [name]'s home as well. he stared for a moment, thinking, before turning towards the way semi had gone and walked away.
