Chapter Two

This picture was taken on the shores of Loch Lomond in Scotland

We all wake early in the morning and eat the rest of our food from last night.

"We should train today, with weapons and magic," I order.

We all reach for our weapons and attach them to our animal skin clothes. Both my sisters and I wear fur dresses that are simple in shape. They have no straps and fit our body closely, ending bellow our bottoms. This allows us lots of room to move our legs when we run. The thin furs are all layered with furs from different animals. Toryn wears material around his waist, showing his ripped torso. All our skin is covered in mud, though we try to clean regularly.

I grab five weapons which all have the same pattern. Two long smooth blades which are slightly curved. The blade handle is white with sparkling silver decorations and swirls. The next are two daggers. Again they are slightly curved and have the same pattern as the swords. Finally, I have a thin cylinder object. When I flick it, it extends into a spear. These gleaming weapons are very out of place with our wild life, but we arrived with them. They are from before our memory loss. Toryn has a large gleaming silver axe, a thick sword, a spear like mine and a mace. The handles of his weapons are decorated red with silver patterns. Serenity has a bow and arrows, a long thin sword as well as two daggers. Her weapons are emerald green decorated, with silver patterns. Tanya has two small axes, a whip lined with spikes, a dagger and sword. Like the rest of the weapons, hers is decorated with swirling silver patterns but with purple behind. All our patterns are different. Mine arch and curve like the water, yet Toryn's are thicker and arch like fire. Serenity's are like vines, weaving around her weapons. Tanya's curl like the wind. Although our weapons all have different patterns, there is one thing that is the same on them all. A circle where the patterns come out from. Inside the circle is a flower. The centre is red and it has four petals. The petals are dark purple at the top and fade to light purple toward the centre of the flower. In between each petal are patterns, coming out from the centre. One is of blue swirls. Then there is one with flame-like patterns, the outline starting red then fading to orange then finally yellow. The next one coming out from between the petals are two green lines, each different shades. The two lines intertwine themselves together. The final one is a single golden swirl. Each of these patterns sits tightly between the purple petals, fitting in perfectly with the flower. Each pattern we guess represents one of the elements. We think that it is some sort of family crest or symbol, though we can't be sure.

We all step off the cliff and land in the forest below.

"To the lake," I tell them. We all race into the forest and come to a stop at the lake.

"Okay, I want you all to close your eyes and take in the world around you," I tell them as we all sit down in a circle. Together, we close our eyes and let the sounds and smells fill our senses.
"Tanya, what do you hear?" I ask her.

"I hear the heartbeats of animals, the tiny flutter of the birds and the huge thump of the beasts. I can also hear the sound of the wind ruffle their fur, their chewing and roaming, the sounds of the earth as they walk through it," she smiles.

"Good, Serenity, what do you smell?"I ask.

"I can smell the animals scents, the flowers and the waters," she says.

"Toryn, are you happy that there is no one out there, no one is watching us?" I ask.
"No, just the forest and forest life," he says. We all murmur in agreement. We always check that there is no one watching us before we train. Just in case. We know that for whatever reason we are out here for, that it is bad and that there must be others involved. If they manage to track us down, then we don't want them to see us train. For all we know, they could be dragon hunters or something.

"Okay, we are going to start with a spar. All of us against each other. Twenty steps back. Powers allowed," I smile. We all stand up and take twenty steps backwards. We all pull out our chosen weapons, mine being my swords. I spin them in my hands.

"Now!" I shout. It erupts into chaos. Tanya swings her whip as I race toward her. As she brings it down, a huge force of wind snaps the air with it, sending me flying back into a tree. I duck from Toryn's axe as it slams into the tree behind me, wood shattering everywhere. I bring up my sword and slice at his stomach. He jumps away and summons fire. I jump to the side as the flames rush past me. I run back toward Toryn, who is now engaging in a battle with Tanya. Roots wrap around my feet and suddenly I am yanked off the ground and hanging in mid-air. I take less than a second to swing my torso up and quickly slicing through roots. I fall toward the ground and manoeuvre my body so I land on my feet in front of Serenity. I bring my foot up and kick her in the stomach. She stumbles back then stands up straight, charging toward me. With her sword raised, she attacks. I fend her off with my two swords, though it is difficult because she is very good. We spin around each other, ducking and striking. I manage to the win the fight when I have her in a position where she would be have been killed. I am breathless whilst I do so. I turn to look at Tanya and Toryn who battle it out. They have yet to notice that I am charging toward them. I jump into the fight, taking them both by surprise, getting a few cuts in, but none in a  position where they would have been killed. The three of us battle all against each other. Gusts of wind and fire rush around us. Tanya manages to get Toryn out by getting him into a position where he would have been killed. He grumbles and walks over to Serenity, bloody and bruised. Tanya and I look at each other. She swings her double axes in her hands and I pull out my daggers and spin them in mine. I hold them in a way where the blade is faced behind me. We attack each other at the same time. Our movements are so quick. We manage to duck and dodge out of each other's attacks as we slice with our weapons. Occasionally, we manage a few good hits. I kick Tanya in the stomach and she falls back at Serenity and Toryn. The three of them get up, their eyes trained on me.

"Cheaters," I say. They smile, swinging their weapons in their hands. I smile and drop mine. I then raise my hands. I can feel the water from the lake rising behind me. They run to attack before I can make my move but it's too late. I slam the water into their chests and then freeze it around them. They can't move and I laugh watching them struggle.
"I win," I say.

When we arrived with our weapons, we knew how to use them. When we touched them, our bodies would automatically know what to do. We have trained and improved every day since then.

"Serenity, can you fix the trees?" I ask, looking around and the destruction we had caused. Serenity smiles beautifully, her green eyes glowing. She walks touches the trees and I watch as her hand glows. The trees slowly begin to heal and become healthy again. I smile. We are all already healing from our wounds as I set our next challenge.

"Next, we are going to track and hunt. I will set a trail and hide then you have to find me. This is about teamwork. Count to two-hundred," I tell them. They nod and I take off into the forest. As I run, I know that I am breaking branches and leaving footprints behind, leaving something for them to track. I run in no particular direction so as to make a maze of trails and possible ways I could have gone. I come to a river and jump in. The water is deep and moving rapidly. I allow it to carry me. I now travel without leaving a trace behind, no scent to mark where I have been and no broken branches. I hold my arms up and cling on to a large branch which hangs over the river. I swing myself up onto it then run across it. I jump higher into the tree, allowing the thick canopy to swallow me up. Once high up, I run from branch to branch then come to a stop and wait. I lift my head above the treeline to look over the forest that goes on for what seems like an eternity. Although it looks normal, with deep green leaves covering the treetops like a blanket, it is obvious that it isn't a normal forest. It has a sense about it like something lurks in the darkness where the sun doesn't reach. It is true. The leaves are so thick that sunlight struggles to get through. I look behind me and see the wall of rock. Clouds linger before the top as usual. Even from the distance that I am from it, it still looks huge and daunting. If I didn't know the cave was there, I wouldn't see it. All I can see now is a tiny black dot. I wonder where the wall does end, if it has an end. I frown and look back at our cave, zooming in on it. Another ability we can do with our sight. Zoom in and out. The cave gets bigger and bigger in my vision. Standing on the ledge, I see Tanya. Her eyes glow purple and her pupil is a slit as she uses her zooming power. She has seen me. She smiles and jumps off the cliff. No doubt, she is going to tell the others where I am. They may already be near my position already. I dip down into the thick branches and start to run again.

I come to a stop suddenly. The branches are thick, curling around each other and the bark dark. I have arrived at the swamp. Where the black roots sink into black waters and mud. Creatures linger in the darkness, waiting to strike when you can't see them. The forest is already dark, but this part is so much darker. All sounds of life seem to vanish, leaving behind the creaking of trees. We hardly ever come to the swamps, they aren't pleasant. A bad smell fills the air and it always seems dark. Today is different. It is darker, quieter. A layer of thick fog ripples across the surface of the water and cuts off vision in the distance. It is out of our borders, but we occasionally come here, for training. The swamps go on for many miles. In fact, you can't get to our part of the forest without crossing them. Slowly, I walk along the branches, the water bubbling below me. Something isn't right. The fog gets thicker and thicker until I can hardly see.

"Isla!" I hear Toryn shout. It sounds like he is close and it sounds muffled like there should be an echo but there isn't.

"Toryn!" I shout back. I stand still and wait for him. The three of them appear a few seconds later, following my scent.

"Why are you out this far?" he asks. I frown, looking into the fog.

"I don't know, but something doesn't feel right. It is too quiet, even for the swamp." It is getting darker and darker like a shadow is being cast over us.

"Let's go back and get some food, we should call it a day," Serenity says. I nod my head. I can tell she is getting a little nervous, I am too. We hear a large sound in the distance, a boom of sorts, so loud and deep that the branches shake. We gasp and jump back. My heart rate increases and the feeling of something racing toward us fills me. The three of us turn on our heals and run, jumping from branch to branch over the black waters. I feel something grabbing at me, like some sort of force is trying to pull me back. It is strong. I put more strength into running. The four of us all let out heavy pants as we try to escape this force trying to pull us back. With a final burst of strength, I jump out of the fog and back into the normal forest. I look behind me. The fog is thick, slowly creeping toward. The four of us pant and look at each other. Looking up at the sky, we see that dark clouds are also creeping across the blue skies and the sun, darkness falling upon us. My heart races and I feel the scared flutter in the pit of my stomach as a scream so deafening fills the silence. It is haunting, like the terrified scream of a child but we know it isn't.

"Run!" I shout. The four of us take off into the forest as we hear another scream, closer this time. I look around as a creature bursts from the fog. It is massive with tight white elastic skin, stretching over its bones in a thin layer. It walks on four thin legs like twigs, yet the size of some trees. At the front of its body are two long arms, large claws curling around its hands. Claws so sharp that they can rip into even a dragons skin. Then, most terrifying of all, is the creatures face. Long, with a thin layer of white skin clinging to its elongated skull. It stretches over empty eye sockets and over the small outline of where a nose should be, leaving behind two small dots both as the nose and in the centre of the eye sockets. Small black dots that with only darkness behind. Its mouth is huge, taking up most of its face and it is full of huge teeth, yellow and stained with blood. It stops upon seeing us, it's long feet sliding across the ground. Then, it lets out another child like scream. Its mouth opens wide, revealing bloody cracks around its lips. More terrifying are the lines of long teeth behind the first layer.

The creature is so big, bigger than my sisters as dragons, yet it runs between the trees almost elegantly. Its long thin legs seeming to bend smoothly around the trees. It is incredibly fast also. My siblings have run into the distance, not realising I had stopped. I take off again, the trees rushing past me in a flash. I can feel it behind me, gaining. Though they don't look it, these creatures are strong. They are our biggest threat in this forest.

"Toryn, Fire!" I shout as I feel giant teeth snapping behind me. Each tooth has to be the same size as me. I jump to the side as a fireball hurdles toward me. The creature lets out an ear-piercing screech as it surrounds it. Trees explode with a crash as the massive fireball engulfs them and the creature, which jumps out of the flames a few seconds later. This time, it has slimy red splotches across its skin, oozing pink slime as well as black from smoke and burns. I role to the side as one of its claws buries into the ground where I was lying just moments ago. I am now under its belly. I scream as I raise my hands, a torrent of sharp ice flying up into its unprotected stomach far above me. Blood sprays onto me as the ice pierces its skin and comes out of the top of its body. It doesn't stop it though. I role over again as it tries to stab me with its claws. I jump out from underneath it and watch as vines grow around its ankles and hands, lifting it into the air and pulling tight so all its limbs are extended. It then struggles for air as Tanya sucks it all away. The vines pull tighter and I watch in horror as I see its limbs beginning to separate from its body. Then, the body alone falls to the floor. As it falls, I pull out my swords and cut off its head with one, then bury my other sword inside the brain. Blood sprays everywhere, over me, over my siblings. I pull the sword out and hold them in my hands, taking deep breaths.

"What is a Bone Walker doing up this far? It doesn't like being this close to the wall?" Tanya asks. I look back at the fog which still slowly crawls toward us.

"I don't know," I whisper. Bone Walkers are scary beasts. They are very hard to kill. They like the real depths of the swamps and will eat anything. They hate the wall though, something about it wards them away. It is part of the reason we stay where we do. It keeps them far far away. So, for one to be this far away from the depths of the swamps is weird.

"Let's get out of here," I say. "I think there are more coming," I say. Miles and miles in the distance, I can hear the faint screams. "Something else is coming," I whisper.

"What about the body?" Toryn asks. I think for a few moments.

"Leave it, perhaps it will send a message to whatever is hunting us and scare them away. They already know we are here so there isn't any point in hiding it. We just need to make sure where we exactly live is kept hidden," I say. They nod their head and we take off back into the forest, leaving behind the bloody, dismembered body of the Bone Walker.

We arrive back in the cave. We ran straight here without stopping, our clothing still bloody. We travelled through the treetops to not leave any sort of trails on the ground. Now, back in the cave, we go into a smaller room in the side. Serenity had put a large hole in the rock and I had filled it with water. One by one, we clean off in the water until our skin is blood free. The furs we burn and we change into our spares. Now, we all sit around the fire. We didn't have time to hunt so we are going hungry tonight. We are not risking going out again, for now. We are silent.

"We should leave, tonight," Tanya says.

"And go where?" I ask. "We have no idea what is out there, for all we know, we could fly straight into the people out there," I say. She sighs, knowing I am right.

"What should we do?" she asks.

"Tomorrow, we fly up onto the cliff and across. We find where it stops, it has to somewhere. When we've seen how far it is until the ocean, we will come back and pack what is necessary. If it is the ocean, then we travel until we find new land. If it is more forest beyond the wall, then we will explore," I tell them. They nod their heads.

"Now, we sleep and rest ready for tomorrow," I tell them. I don't like the idea of leaving, but I can sense that we are not safe here.
