Chapter Three

This picture was taken on the Mountain Tryfan in North Wales. It overlooks the Ogwen Valley.

I wake in the middle of the night. Something is wrong. Very wrong. Without waking my siblings, I walk slowly through the pitch black as we have no flame lit. There is nothing but darkness, but I know my way around so well that I can navigate my way through the tunnel without a problem. I come out to the ledge and frown. There is no moon or stars, just a thick layer of black cloud. I can only just see the black outlines of the trees below. It is a very dark night. I walk slowly back into the cave and wake my siblings.

"I am going into the forest," I tell them.

"Are you sure, is it safe?"Serenity asks.

"I don't know, but I can sense something is wrong and I need to see for my self. I will travel fast and quiet," I tell them. They nod their heads. I collect my weapons, knowing I may need them.

"Be ready," I tell them, then walk back out of the tunnel. Toryn lights a flame in the centre of the room. On the ledge, there is no trace of a flame inside the cave, the tunnel is too long and the cave too deep into the side of the cliff or any light to escape or get drawn in.

I step off the ledge, the world falling slowly around me. My feet land on the ground softly and I look around me. I silently swing up into the trees, my heart beating loud in my chest. The forest is very silent tonight. I can only see rough black outlines as I slowly make my way across the branches. My bare feet walk slowly over the bark and my movements are completely silent. I come to a stop. I can't hear anything. That scares me. I can feel something near, but I can't see. I can only see shadows and darkness. I slow my breathing, even that feels loud in my ears. I close my eyes and allow the night vision of the dragon to come forward. When I open them, I almost scream. The world is black and white, but I can see perfectly. What I can see are hundreds of people below me. They all stand perfectly still. I can see their long coats of leather with large belts around their waists. Large metal black pads sit on their shoulders and around their arms and legs. Metal skeletal masks sit on their faces but their eyes glow behind them. They glow because of the night vision. On their waists are huge longs swords with thick metal as well as long silver sticks which are smooth and pointed. They stand as if they are waiting for something, their bodies spread evenly through the forest. There are so many. Slowly, I walk along the branches above them, not making a sound. They are evil, I can sense it. I watch as they begin to move. A man walks through the lines. I watch in amazement at how he walks. He wears a long black coat, though not leather. Over it is a thick black metal breastplate as well as metal pads over his shoulders, arms and hands. His trousers are black, but his legs have yet more metal, covering most of them. His boots are huge and with more black metal, yet he manages to walk without making any sound. Around his head is a large black hood, showing only darkness behind. He is huge, with a large sword hanging from his hips. I don't get to see it properly. He walks with such power and control. He comes to a stop, then looks around.

"I can sense you," he says, his voice deep. I stay silent.

"Sir, there is nothing near here, our magic would sense it," a voice says.

"Silence," he snaps. "We are being watched," he says. They all seem to shuffle uncomfortably. I tuck myself deeper into the thick branches.

"Come out now, and we won't hurt you," he says, his voice even. Lie. I can tell. He laughs. "Don't be stubborn, we know you are near." I lick my lips, my heart beating quickly. I dare not move. He takes a deep breath.
"Girl," he says.

"Sir?" the same man from earlier says.

"It is a girl who watches us, silently, not making a sound. I can hear your heartbeat though. I can hear it's rapid beats of fear." I take a deep breath and calm my body. He laughs again, still looking.

"Impressive," he says. "But I will still find you, I can still hear your heart and small breaths. I can still smell your scent, it is strong." I stand slowly and walk along the branch which hangs above the man. I know they can't see in the dark like I can, or I would have been spotted. There is something about him though... he isn't one of them. He looks at where I just was.

"How is it you move without me hearing?" he asks. "Little dragon girl?" he taunts in his cold deep voice. I stop dead in my tracks for a few moments, feeling my heart speed up again as I feel fear for the first time in a long time. How does he know what I am?  I frown, then jump across onto another branch, trying to calm myself down again. Fear will not help me.

"If you know what I am, then why do you bother?" I ask. They all gasp and turn in the direction of the voice. He spins around to where I am crouched on a branch. He laughs.

"There you are little dragon girl," I stay emotionless.

"Well, in answer to your question little dragon girl, we have blocked your power," he tells me. I frown, sensing it still there.

"No, you haven't," I tell him. In a second, his moves, a crossbow in his hand. A long arrow flies toward me. I catch it in my hands with ease. I frown, the arrow has been enchanted, I can feel it, but it doesn't affect me. They all gasp as I snap it in my hands. There is silence.

"Get her!" he shouts. I jump up further into the tree, dodging as beams of smoke like light fly past me, causing bark to splinter next to me. I dread to think what effect that will have on me if it hits me. I watch as some of the black-robed men start to climb quickly up the tree like ants. I come to the top, my head poking out of the canopy. I look below and see them still climbing toward me, getting closer. The main man leading the way with large powerful movements.

"Stop running, you don't have anywhere to go," he taunts as he climbs. He is close now.

"Wrong again soldier man," I say. He goes to grab my legs when I jump, putting my strength into my legs to jump as high in the air as I can. I jump out of the canopy and into the sky above. I slowly begin to fall back toward him where he waits in the branches. Before I reach him, I land on the back of Serenity, her belly skimming his hands. She rises into the sky and spins around, back toward the wall where Tanya and Toryn wait. Tanya in dragon form has her claws buried in the stone, perched on the vertical wall. Toryn sits on her back, one hand on her spikes the other hanging next to him as his body is twisted so he can see the two of us. Serenity lands in the rock next to Tanya, her claws latch into the rock. I look at Toryn.

"We are leaving, now!" I say. He nods his head and pats Tanya's head. She lets out a roar and lets go of the rock, twisting her body and spreading her wings. Serenity follows. The two of us rise into the air. I look down below at the base of the cliff and see the black-robed men swarming up the cliff, quickly. Again, like a giant swarm of ants. I frown as I see some starting to fly quickly toward us. More coloured beams fly past us along with more of those enchanted arrows. Tanya and serenity in their dragon forms, weave of the way as we rise. We get into the thick cloud which lights up with the beams next to us. As we go over the cliff, where their arrows can't reach, however, it is silent. There is no visibility, just cloud. Tanya lets out a roar of air, pushing the clouds aside. I help, moving the clouds away as they are full of water vapour. Everything becomes clear. The flat stone carries on as far as the eye can see, perfectly smooth and straight. Tanya and Serenity fly at a fast speed over it, Tanya manipulating the wind to make us go faster. I look behind us. The edge of the cliff is far away, they wouldn't be able to catch up with us. Especially as the cloud closes back in as soon as we pass through it. I am wrong though. One of them flies alongside us. I gasp as I see what he is flying on. A long black metal pole. It has sharp metal spikes at the end and with black footholds at the back as he is practically lying on it. He looks over, his metal skeletal mask shining. He pulls out the long metal spike. I swing my hand around and ice flies from it, the long shards cutting through his body. He flies off the broom and hits the stone ground heavily, skidding along the stone. The broom also falls and shatters. More of the flying broom men appear out of the cloud behind us.

"Toryn!" I shout. He nods his head and spins his body around to face the wave of flying men chasing us. He takes a deep breath and lets out a wave of fire. His eyes glow like the fire and red scales have formed around his hairline and neck. Some of the attackers are engulfed in the flames, their screams loud as they are burnt and tumble onto the stone. Others doge the large wave of fire, twisting in the air. My turn. I take a deep breath and let out a thick wave of ice. It hits them, freezing them instantly and some getting impaled by the large shards. Together, Toryn and I do this, sending out large bursts of fire and ice and consuming many that follow. I grab onto Serenity tightly as she suddenly rises in the air, her and Tanya doing it in perfect sync like it is rehearsed. The gaining flying attackers fly straight under where we were. Tanya lets out a roar of air which sends the attackers tumbling off of their flying devices and crashing into the ground below. They begin to rise toward us. Serenity snarls and grabs one in her mouth, biting into him then throwing his body away. We all fight them off. Tanya and Serenity both in their dragon forms, twisting and biting. They are very ferocious. Toryn and I use our powers and weapons. I swing my blade quickly through the air, cutting off the head of one getting close.

"If we don't get away, we are going to have to shift!" Toryn shouts at me. I look at him.

"I know!" I shout back. I don't want to shift, it is very painful because I am such a big dragon. Toryn is already close to bringing the dragon out. His eyes burn like fire and sharp black slits sit in the centre. Around his hairline, forehead and eyes are glowing scales the colour of lava. Fangs have grown in his mouth, only slightly large than his other teeth but pointy and sharp. Dark red scales ripple over his skin. I know I must also look similar. My eyes will be glowing white with their thin black slits in the centre. White and sparkling scales will decorate my skin and I can feel my fangs sharp in my mouth. I prepare my self for the change and the pain, then stop. I watch with wide eyes as a blue line flies through the air, knocking all the attackers off their brooms. We continue to fly, no more attackers following. It is silent again as we take deep breaths. What was that? I wonder. The clouds all clear and I can see the miles and miles of rock. I switch off the night vision as the sun begins to rise, leaving the skies a lighter blue. Looking behind me, I see that there are no attackers in sight. The blue wave must have knocked them all off their flying brooms. The sun continues to rise and it gets lighter. The rock is perfectly flat and seems to never end. I wonder where that blue light had even come from. I frown, seeing something standing in the distance, figures. I don't get to see them properly before the blue wave of light comes toward us. I let out a scream as the blue light hits us. Then, there is only black.
