Episode 1 - Chapter 5 part 1 - Welcome Home
The group had decided to leave Kenny alone for the time being until he had mourned. So before the hour had ended, Lee had explored most of the building they had been transported to. The building they were in was more like a mansion than anything else. The mansion had multiple floors, a basement, multiple living rooms, a kitchen, a library, multiple bedrooms and a dining room. This made Lee more curious on who stayed here. It most likely belonged to the person who brought them here. But Lee hadn't seen any evidence on who that was. The only thing Lee knew about this person is the writing on the screen when they all first arrived here.
Lee had checked on Clementine to see if she was coping well after the discovery of her parent's deaths. He didn't like seeing her sad and wanted what was best for her. Of course Clementine wasn't okay when he checked on her but she at least expressed her happiness for him to look after her.
Currently Lee was sitting down in one of the living rooms with thoughts racing through his head about the future. But he was mainly thinking about the people who would show up here that he learned about when he first got here. Who would these people be? How where they important to their future? But if he trusted the screen then he knew that when they arrived that they would be friendly.
"Hey," Lee wasn't startled when Carley had entered the room. So far she was one of the few from the other group who had treated him and his group fairly.
"Hey." He replied evenly.
"Kenny's back, so everyone has gone back to the viewing area. You coming?"
Lee nodded and followed Carley back into the room. Lee could see that Kenny was sitting back with his family. His arms were crossed and he was forcefully observing the blank screen, seemingly like he didn't want look at the others yet. Katjaa shared a sad look with Lee as he and Carley sat down.
"Finally. We can start." Larry broke the silence. Lilly debated to either frown at her father's impatience or do nothing. She chose the latter.
The group is in Kenny's truck, which sputters to a stop.
Kenny: Well, this is as far as we're going.
Lee: Then it's far enough.
Everyone gets out of the truck and walks down the street. Lee briefly stops in front of his family's pharmacy.
The drugstore group took a moment to view the empty street. For most of them it was strange to see it so empty when it was once filled with working cars and people.
The one who found it weird the most was Lee. Brief memories came back to him of his family at the drugstore and around his home town. Maybe the world would go back to normal in the near future? But he knew he was a fool to believe that. The person who brought them here pretty much crushed that thought line as soon as they arrived here.
Duck: Look!
Duck points to what appears to be a person near a car in the distance. Kenny waves his arms to try to get their attention.
Kenny: Hey there! You friendly? Truck's run out of gas.
Kenny didn't say anything but from the way he sighed and shook his head, it was clear he was berating himself in his head for doing that.
The person looks up, revealing that it's actually a zombie eating a dead survivor.
Kenny: FUCK!
Many zombies start approaching the group, surrounding them.
Katjaa: We're TRAPPED!
Duck: WAAH!
A zombie knocks Duck over and tries to attack him.
Duck: AHHH! NO! NO!
Kenny and his family all tensed. It was a miracle that Carley and Glenn had rushed out and saved Duck at that specific time. They were all lucky no one got bitten here. One of them would've been a ticking time bomb otherwise.
Someone shoots the zombie, who collapses on Duck. Duck, now covered in zombie blood, returns to the group and is hugged by his parents. The woman who saved Duck continues to shoot the zombies. Another survivor stands at the entrance of the pharmacy.
Even though what they did had saved people, Lilly was still angered by her lack of authority over her group. She was supposed to be doing what was best for this group to survive and so far everyone was not listening to her. The only one who did was her father but sometimes he made situations worse.
She didn't want to ask for help in leading. She didn't want to appear weak.
Glenn: RUN!
Carley fires a few more shots at the zombies and everyone runs into the building behind Glenn. He closes and padlocks the metal gate in front of the building and joins the others inside as zombies pound on the gate. Inside the pharmacy there are three additional survivors.
Lilly: We can't take risks like this!
Carley: And we can't just let people die, either.
Carley nodded firmly at her own words. If they just let people die they wouldn't be any better than the walkers.
Lilly: When I SAY "that door stays shut no matter what" I fucking MEAN it. We don't know who these people are; they could be dangerous!
Larry: Worse, they could've led 'em right to us!
Carley: Where the hell is your humanity?! They would've died out there!
Larry: Then we let 'em!
Lee: Whoa, chill the fuck out, lady. We're just people trying to avoid those things, just like you.
Lilly didn't appreciate Lee antagonising her in front of her people. It was already hard for her to lead the group. He didn't help when he swore at her.
Lilly: Don't come in here and swear at me!
Lee: I'll say whatever I want if you start threatening these people.
Carley: You'll have to excuse her.
Lilly: The hell he, or ANYONE will. This is about survival, do you guys not see what's happening?
Clementine holds Lee's hand and shyly looks up at him.
Lee: What is it?
Clementine: I...I have to pee.
Clementine felt a little shy with her comment being brought up but she didn't have to feel it long when the screen went back to the tension in the drugstore.
In the background:
Glenn: I'd go out there again in a second.
Lilly: I bet you would. You're a dumb, careless kid.
Carley: I would too!
"Thanks." Glenn muttered to Carley. It was nice to have some backup when they had been arguing. Carley glanced at him.
"No problem."
Lee: In a minute, Clem.
Clementine lets go of Lee's hand.
Glenn: They've got kids, Lilly.
Lilly: Those things outside don't care.
Kenny: Maybe you should go join 'em, then. You'll have something in common!
Larry began to bristle before remembering that this had already happened. There was not much he could for his daughter as the screen played.
Larry: Goddamn it, Lilly, you have to control these people!
Lilly: Carley and Glenn just ran out there!
Larry: I don't give a flying fuck! We're in a warzone!
It was a surprise to some that their commotion hadn't alerted the walkers from the argument. They had all been shouting pretty loudly.
In the background, Clementine approaches the bathroom.
Lee: She's an asshole, that's for sure.
Lilly: That's what it takes.
Lee: Well, you don't have to be a bitch about it.
Lilly still hadn't exactly forgiven Lee for calling her a bitch in front of everyone. She was right in saying that they could have been dangerous. They didn't know who they were properly and they had been drawing attention towards their location.
It was all about survival. And having Carley and Glenn run out of the store to help some strangers put their survival at risk.
But then again, they could also help them survive. With more people in the group it meant there would be more people to defend the group.
Larry: Ho-ly SHIT.
Larry looks behind him. Duck is sitting on one of the chairs near the bar and Katjaa is attending to him.
Larry: Son of a bitch, one of them is bitten!
Lee: He wasn't bitten.
Larry: Hell he wasn't!
"You wanna say that again, old man?" Kenny glared at Larry. Larry glared right back.
"I already said I'm fucking sorry."
Larry: We have to end this, now.
Larry walks over to Duck but Kenny stands in front of him, blocking his way.
Kenny: Over my dead body.
Larry: We'll dig one hole.
Katjaa didn't want to see this again. This was still fresh on her mind. She had almost lost her son. What if Duck had been bitten? She didn't want to think about what would've happened.
Katjaa: No! I'm cleaning him up! There's no bite! He's fine!
Katjaa hurriedly tries to wipe away the blood on Duck, searching for a bite.
Larry: Don't you fucking people get it? We've already SEEN this happen. We let someone with a bite stay and--and WE all end up bitten!
Kenny: Shut up.
Larry: We gotta throw him out! Or smash his head in!
This time Lilly couldn't help grimacing. Contrary to her father's belief, she didn't think it was the right thing to do, or that her father was in the right for that matter. She had just been worried for her father at the time.
Katjaa: KENNY! STOP HIM!
Kenny: Lee, what do we do about this guy?
Lilly: Dad, it's just a boy, it's--
Larry: Lilly, I'll handle this.
Lilly: But your heart, Dad. You need to calm down. We'll get this kid out of here.
Lee: We kick his ass.
A smile found itself on Kenny's face. He was glad Lee had his back in this moment. The smile vanished when the next events continued to be shown.
Lee crosses his arms.
Kenny: That's what I'm thinking.
Carley: Everyone CHILL THE FUCK OUT!
Lilly: Nobody is doing ANYTHING.
Larry: Shut up, Lilly! (turns to Carley) And YOU. Shut the fuck up. (turns back to the group) They will find us and they will get in here, and none of this will fucking matter. But right now we're about to be TRAPPED in here with one of those things.
Doug frowned and Carley's eyes narrowed at Larry's attitude towards the group.
Lee also frowned. He understood that Larry was worried for his daughter's sake but there were kids in the group. Not everyone would be able to stand his attitude for very long if Larry kept on acting this way, even if his intentions were for the better good.
Kenny: What the hell are you talkin' about?
Larry: He's bitten! That's how you TURN.
"Better hope none of us actually get bitten." Glenn said.
"No shit." Was Lee's reply.
Katjaa: He's not bitten! Lee, stop this! It's upsetting him!
Larry: Oh, I'm "upsetting" him? Upsetting is getting eaten alive!
Lilly: Dad, we get it, it's a big deal.
Larry: Do you? You're not fucking acting like it!
Lee: It's Larry, right? Man, this is his son.
Larry: Look around, dumbass. I got a daughter in here, YOU got a daughter in here. Get your head out of your ass, boy.
Kenny already knew that Lee would do anything to protect Clementine from seeing Lee's actions towards the girl. So it pissed him off greatly that Larry was trying to use the young girl as an excuse to murder his son.
Lee: We've all got people in here and we can figure this out without killing anybody. There's another way.
Larry: Yeah, with a shovel.
Duck was held protectively by his parents. And a glare was sent Larry's way.
Kenny: I'm gonna kill him, KAT. Just worry about Duck!
Clementine: Lee?
Clementine stands in front of the bathroom door.
Lee: Yeah?
Clementine: There's someone in there.
A protective urge flared up inside of Lee again from the oncoming danger.
"How long have you guys been stationed at the drug store?" He asked.
"A short while. Why?"
"So the thought of securing the place didn't cross your mind? How did you not notice the walker?" Lee was disappointed with Lilly's answer. Clementine had come very close to danger. Too close for his liking and it could have been prevented if the drugstore group had made sure the entire place was safe.
"Of course we did. We only were able to clean out the office before you guys drew attention in the streets."
"You cleaned out the office? Who where-"
The screen kept playing before he could finish his question.
Lee: It's just locked. Key's behind the counter. Probably.
Larry: Hey, I'm not the bad guy here, I'm just looking out for my daughter!
Kenny: No, you're just the guy arguing for killing a kid!
Larry: He's covered in muck! She'll find the bite. WATCH.
Kenny: She won't.
Larry: And if she DOES? The first thing he'll do is sink his teeth into his mom's face. Then once she's dead, he'll probably pounce on YOUR little girl! She'll turn fast and then they'll be three. And that, boy, is the ballgame.
It was wrong to kill a child but a brief thought did cross Lilly's mind.
If Duck had been bitten then she would have made sure to put the group's safety first and get him out of the drug store.
But she quickly shook that thought away. That was wrong on so many levels. She would be a monster if she allowed that sort of stuff to happen.
Lee: Then we deal with it then. But right now we're just freaking everybody out.
Kenny and Katjaa were grateful that Lee had been with them. They were also grateful that Lee had stood up for their son's safety. Without him, Kenny doubted that he could have successfully protected Duck from Larry's onslaught.
Larry: Then get ready to deal with it because that boy is BITTEN.
Kenny: It's not gonna happen!
Larry: It is and we're tossing him out NOW!
Lee: (angrily, shouting) NO! You don't touch that boy, you don't TOUCH anybody! I've got a little girl I'm trying to protect in here too. You want to get violent, you old fuck?! Well, COME ON. You better have a plan to kill me, though, because it's ME before anyone else in here!
There was another stunned silence at Lee's heroism.
Although Larry eyes narrowed. He was pissed that Lee was being shown as a good guy. To him it was impossible that Lee could be anything near good. He was a convicted murderer and yet here he was being shown as the opposite.
Maybe Larry would be able to get a new perspective on Lee?
Clementine screams as the bathroom door opens and a zombie emerges from it, trying to attack her.
Lee clenched his fists at the scene while Clementine nervously moved closer to Lee.
"Oh man." Was all could Glenn could say.
Larry: Jesus!
Lee: CLEMENTINE!
Lee tries to run over to her, but bumps into Lilly and falls to the ground, hitting his head. His vision is blurry, but he can vaguely see the zombie grabbing Clementine.
Lee gets up and runs over to Clementine, pulling the zombie away from her.
Lee: Get away from her, you son of a bitch!
Clementine felt calmer since Lee had saved her but still, she didn't like to see Lee in danger.
She hoped he would remain safe in the future.
The zombie gets up and attacks Lee, and he tries to push it away.
Lee: Ah, god, get...off...ugh...
The zombie gets shot and falls to the floor.
Lee: Man...
Carley lowers her gun.
Larry was displeased of how fast Carley had been to save Lee.
She risked all of their safety for a low criminal.
Meanwhile Kenny had relaxed more now that his son and friend were safe again.
Carley: You okay?
Lee: Just great, thanks.
Glenn: Uh...guys?
Zombies growl and pound on the door.
Lee took a quick mental note to avoid creating loud notices in the future seeing that noise attracted a lot of these things.
Lilly: (whispering) Everybody DOWN! Stay QUIET!
Kenny and his family huddle together, Clementine hides behind Lee, and everyone else kneels down behind the shelves.
Larry: (whispering) They're gonna get in!
Kenny: (whispering) SHUT UP.
Noises and gunfire is heard outside followed by the sound of a helicopter flying away.
Lee: Is that the military?
"It must be. They're the only ones who would be getting rid of the dead." Kenny stated.
Lilly: I don't know.
Glenn: Thank god for whatever it is.
Larry gets up and marches across the room. Everyone leaves their hiding positions.
Larry: We almost DIED because of this bitch and her itchy trigger finger! That was stupid! That was--
Larry groans and grabs his chest, falling to the floor.
Lilly panicked at the sight of her dad's heart acting up again. Although she was still confused on how Larry was fine right now.
"Are you feeling okay?"
"I'm fine, Lilly." Came Larry's response. If he was being honest he was still perplexed on how his heart felt fine again as soon as he arrived in this place.
Did the person who brought them here heal his heart or was it only a temporary fix?
Lilly: DAD!
Larry: (whispering) Shit. Fuck.
Lilly runs over to Larry, who is lying on his side on the floor.
Lee: What's wrong with him?!
Lilly: It's his heart!
Larry: My pills...
Katjaa: Uh--um... Nitroglycerin pills?
Lilly stands up.
Lilly: YES. We're out. We've been trying to get into the pharmacy since we got here! Please, try to get in there! Behind the counter, where the pills are!
Lee: There's probably another entrance. Maybe through the office.
Carley let out a disappointed sigh. Lee was being too open about his identity. Sure everyone here now knew about Lee's past but she still thought he should be careful about talking about it. Not everyone would react positively to his past. The group's reaction to the start of the viewing proved that.
Carley: How do you know that's an office?
Lee: Educated guess.
Lilly: It doesn't matter. We need nitroglycerin pills. Please get in there. I'll keep an eye on my dad.
Kenny: Everyone else should get comfy and look for anything useful. We could be in here a while.
Glenn: I'm starting to think this drugstore isn't a permanent solution.
Kenny: You're right, this ain't exactly Fort Knox.
Lee: What do you suggest?
Glenn: We need as much gas as possible so we can ALL get out of downtown Macon. Fast.
Lee: Agreed.
Glenn: Then I'll head out and get gas. There's a motel not too far from here, out towards the end of Peachtree. I'll work my way towards it and then loop back, siphoning what I can.
"Hey, where were you before we got here?"
"Oh, I hadn't actually left yet. I was just leaving through the door to the back alley. No need to worry about me." Doug nodded. At least when they get back they will all be together.
Lee: Damn, that'd be great.
Glenn: Well, it's gotta get done. Plus, I'm quick and I know Macon.
Lee: Local?
Glenn: Born and raised.
Lee: If you're gonna do that, here's a walkie-talkie if you get in a tight spot. Hopefully you won't need it.
Lee gives his walkie-talkie to Glenn.
Glenn: Cool.
Lee: Clementine's got the other one. Check in with her and get back here as soon as you can.
Kenny: And, you, what's your name?
Lilly: It's Lilly. My dad's Larry.
Kenny: Keep a good eye on him. These boys will work on getting you your medicine.
Lee: That's right.
Lilly knew that all she would be able to do at that moment would be to try and keep her father calm since they would be unable to go to a hospital.
Since her father was alright at the moment she hoped that he would stay that way when they were sent back.
Kenny: And you, you keep an eye on that front door. You're our lookout.
Doug: It's Doug, you got it.
Carley: And I'm Carley.
Kenny: Okay, Carley, you'll shift in with Doug when he needs it. For now, get some rest--you're a good shot and I'd like to keep it that way.
Carley: (nods) You got it, boss.
Kenny: Now get him those pills.
'They can take their time.' Kenny thought.
Kenny stands next to Katjaa and Duck. Lilly kneels next to Larry, who is now propped up on the shelves behind him. Doug looks out the window near the entrance. Carley works on a radio and Clementine sits on a cardboard box nearby, holding her radio.
"Well we're now caught back up to the present." Doug stated. "So what now?
"In the beginning, the screen said that we would first watch our past and then watch out future choices, remember? I guess whatever happens next is what we were going to do before we got here." Lee answered.
"Not to mention, it did say other people will be coming. Anyone have any ideas on who they will be?" Glenn asked.
He didn't get a reply. So he assumed not.
Lilly crossed her arms.
"Well let's get this over with."
