Chapter 4
I didn't know how I ended up letting Saga talk me into going to this party. I didn't know a single person here. She... Or well right now, he, I guess, didn't seem to mind that fact at all. Everybody's eyes were on him as soon as we entered the sorority house.
He immediately found the redhead, who had invited us. She looked like she just jumped out of the pages of some adult magazine judging by the clothes or lack thereof, she was wearing. Made me feel entirely underdressed in my loose jeans and t-shirt.
Saga didn't seem to mind that one bit either. That everyone were better dressed than me. In a suave move, he slid his arm around her waist and whispered something in her ear that made her giggle like crazy. He grinned at me and let the redhead lead him to the dance floor.
I didn't know what to do with my hands or with the rest of myself, so I decided to go to the kitchen to get a drink. Maybe that would help me relax.
Somebody had put a giant bathtub in the middle of the brown kitchen and filled it with beer cans. I spotted Troy talking to some guy and headed towards him. He smiled and yelled my name, wrapping his arm around my neck.
"What are you doing here?" he asked, surprised. I raised my beer can.
"Having a beer."
His smile expanded and his arm tightened around me. "I am just happy you're actually outside of our room. Anyways, this is Kyle. Kyle, this is my roommate; Seth!"
"Hey man, I've heard a lot about you!" Kyle said in a friendly tone. I smiled and took a sip of my beer, not really sure how to respond to that. I had never in my life heard Troy talk about a Kyle. Maybe he had. I usually tuned out, when he started talking about guys.
All of a sudden Saga stood next to me almost causing another heart attack. Not just to me but to Troy too.
"Holy hotness," he whispered, his eyes wide.
Saga didn't look very pleased but then he spotted Troy and smiled halfly at him.
"What happened to the redhead?"
"Ugh, she was from Mississippi," he said like it explained anything. "Who's your friend?"
"Not from Mississippi," Troy hurried to say with a sly grin. Kyle shot him a look and left the three of us alone.
"I can hear that. Let me guess. Cali?"
"How did you know? I thought I had lost most of my Cali accent."
Saga smiled showing his pearly whites which would have made a dentist proud. "I can just tell."
"Well, that's great and all but we should get going, right buddy?" I was not really interested in stuffing my ears with whatever I could find later this night, just to drown out those two.
"Yeah, see ya later Seth, go have fun or something," Saga replied without even looking at me.
Knowing I might have lost my roommate to a god, I started back to the living room. And stopped. Abruptly.
A girl with a very tight dress was talking to some dude. A red glow was all around her. I had never seen her before, and I was pretty sure, with Saga here more of her kind would show up. I stayed in the back of the room observing her.
It didn't look like she was here for anything else than the party. I wondered what Saga was really hiding from. And it couldn't just be a coincidence another weirdo had showed up, the moment Saga had.
I had had enough of eyeballing the girl and went back to the kitchen to find what appeared to be Saga trying to eat Troy's face. I didn't even bother to be nice anymore. I just grabbed the collar on Sagas shirt and yanked him away from Troy.
"Buddy, what the fu-"
"There's someone here," I whispered, annoyed. Saga looked confused until he finally realised what I meant. He cursed under his breath and looked extremely paranoid.
Troy looked a little dazed and took a sip of his drink. He'd be fine.
"What is it?" Saga asked.
"How am I supposed to know?! It's a girl with a red glow around her." I threw my arms out to the sides. Saga grabbed the front of my shirt and dragged me into the living room.
"Point her out to me."
I nodded towards the girl in the tight dress. Sagas jaw tightened while a muscle started popping out of his neck.
He didn't even hesitate. He went straight for the girl, grabbed her arm and dragged her out the front door. I hurried after them. He pushed her up against a stone wall and placed both of his hands on the either side of her head.
"So," he growled in a low voice. "What the fuck are you?"
I fucking. Hated. Getting interrupted. Seth had done good work for sure, but I was distracting myself. I liked Californians, especially the one I had found here. And this little bitch was totally killing my vibe.
"What the fuck are you?" I asked inching my face closer to hers. She didn't even look bothered by me invading her personal space. She just looked over my shoulder at Seth and sighed.
"Since when did Watchers become snitches? Seriously bro, not cool."
"Hey missy, don't look at him." I grabbed her chin and jerked her face back towards me. "Focus on me, yeah? What are you and who sent you?"
"Jesus Christ, I'm a maygi, okay? Derek asked me to keep an eye on you." She pushed my hand away from her face.
"Yeah well, you can tell Derek to kiss my ass, alright?" I pushed off the wall.
"And you can eat shit, man. Why are you guys always so goddamn pissy? What happened to 'we're immortal and living it up'?"
I slammed my fist into the wall, centimetres from her head. She finally looked startled. It never took much to scare those little bitches.
Maygis were a royal pain the ass to everybody in the non-mortal world except angels. They were like the yin to the angels' yang. Always lurking in the darkness. And they had some pretty impressive powers. Nothing like mine of course, but they could put me out of commission for a while if they really wanted. They rarely did, because they were too busy running after the angels making small freaky half-blood babies, but apparently the angels now sent them after me.
"Maybe you should be a little more respectful, Dorothy. I could end you before you could say 'I don't think we're in Kansas anymore'," I snarled. Not my best reference, but I was pissed.
Seth made a nervous move behind me, but I couldn't care less. He would probably see me go off on another non-mortal again if I decided to stick around. And I liked this little town.
"Okay listen, I'm just here because Derek sent me, okay? I'm not about to piss on your parade or anything."
"Yeah and I bet that now you've found me, Derek is gonna be all 'oh what a nice little town, this awesome god has found I'll just pop by and bring this little god's ass back to Big Daddy' right?"
"Uhm... No. I had a falling out with Derek."
"Oh come on. I wasn't made yesterday, sweetheart."
"It's the truth! Just ask the Watcher. He can see if I'm lying or not."
I turned to Seth and crossed my arms over my chest. He slouched his shoulders and stared at his shoes like he thought they would give him the answer.
"Oh my god, he doesn't know how!" she laughed hysterically. "You've found the worst Watcher in the world!"
I turned slowly, my nostrils flaring. She immediately stopped laughing, but the smile was still on her lips. My hands curled into fists. I was the only one who could have a go at Seth. This little bitch needed to be taught a lesson.
The smile faded from her mouth when she realised, I wasn't playing around anymore.
"Okay look," she started. I leaned close to her slowly wrapping my fingers around her throat. "I am telling the truth!" Her voice was thick with desperation. Her eyes were almost glowing with fear. And I was so close to letting go and just killing this bitch.
"Yeah? Why should I believe you?" I asked with a low voice.
"Because Derek would have been here now if I wasn't."
Okay, she had a point but my hand didn't move.
"I think she's telling the truth, Saga," Seth said as he started tripping nervously. "And people are starting to stare..."
I slowly removed my hand from her neck, still kind of wanting to snap it. Even if it wouldn't kill her. Stuffing my itching killer hands into the pockets of my jeans, I moved a step back.
"So, Derek."
"Yeah... He's a prick."
"You can say that again," I snorted.
"Well, he didn't exactly agree with me on some key subjects with this mission. Like he didn't care if you killed me. And I quite like living, you see. So like, I decided to sniff you out myself. And join you,"
"Join me? In what?"
"In taking down Paradise!" She wasn't joking. She wasn't even remotely joking. I couldn't even laugh, it was that stupid.
"Listen, honey, I don't know what Derek told you..."
"Oh, he told me everything."
My eyes narrowed. "I highly doubt that."
She narrowed her eyes back at me and we entered an epic stare down. I should have snapped her neck when I had the chance.
"Is everything alright here?" a tall guy asked, looking nervously at me. The guy the maygi had talked to earlier.
"Yeah, it's alright. Come on, Seth." I was over this conversation.
I finally understood why Derek was so determined. If he truly believed I was going after Big Daddy I was in big trouble.
My jaw started aching before we even made it back to the big lawn outside of Seth's dorm from me working it so hard.
Why would they ever think I was taking on Big Daddy?
Okay, after Asia I could kind of understand where they were coming from...
I stepped right into Seth and almost fell over. I was ready to curse his ass from here to Christmas, but I stopped. I knew why he had stopped so suddenly. Seeing an angel for the first time must be scary.
They're usually very large, not just tall but pack a body every muscle-man would envy. This one was pale as flour with dark hair. Didn't know him personally, but he looked like a real prick. Not that all of the other angels didn't, but his face was the kind of face begging to be punched. I quickly stepped in front of Seth, shielding him with my body.
"I should have known you would be here."
"Pish posh," the angel said waving his hand at me. "Nobody expects you to have a working head on your shoulders anymore."
"Seth dearie, I think it's time you skedaddled," I growled.
"Oh, we know you've claimed the Watcher. He's not going anywhere. Or maybe we'll let him walk if you give what you stole back."
"Not happening buddy." I started backing up, placing my hand on Seth's stomach to push him back.
The angel unfolded his big white wings and started towards us. I was already tired of this conversation and this angel had a really punch-able face. I whipped my arm out pointing the palm of my hand at the angel. His stupid face paled even more.
Oh yeah, stupid jerk-face angel? Meet the power of a god.
Power tingled down from my shoulder out to my fingertips. A ball of light started forming close to the palm of my hand. Jerk-face started to back off, but he knew. He so knew he was not coming back to the mortal world anytime soon. I released the power-ball and it hit the angel square in the chest. He looked up at me and smirked.
"Doesn't work on me." Oh I did know this angel! He had this freaky immunity to some powers, my little light ball trick included.
Shit. Shit shit shit. I whirled around, grabbed Seth's arm and started running.
"Where are we going?" Seth yelled, looking deadly pale.
I didn't answer. Where were we going?
Claimed. They thought I had claimed Seth. Shit in a bucket!
I felt dizzy after using so much power and my vision kind of blurred. I needed to juice up. I whirled around again and let go of Seth.
Fine little angel, I didn't want to do this in front of Seth, but fine. Prepare to die.
I jumped forward, catching our follower around the midsection. He slammed down the ground with me on top of him. I wrapped my fingers around his throat and bent over to meet his gaze.
"Goodbye asshole," I growled almost silently.
My hands started glowing as the soul of the angel started seeping into my hands. I could feel the rush of power I loved so much. The angel looked at me. His gaze was... Filled with pity. He pitied me? He was the one dying here!
I let go of his throat and stumbled backwards. I teleported back next to Seth, grabbed his hand and teleported us away.
I didn't even know, where we ended up. In the middle of a forest. Seth fell to the ground. Hard. He didn't look well. I squatted in front of him searching for any visible damage.
"Are you hurt?" I asked with a low voice. He looked down and then back up at me.
"No, I don't think so." His voice trembled.
"Listen, they think I claimed you, meaning they now think we're on the same team. Like you would die for me and vice-versa. You can't go back to college."
It looked like he was about to pass out, the poor boy. What if he did pass out? What does one do with people who pass out?
He buried his face in his hands. I couldn't deal.
"Seth," I tried to say as softly as I could. I slowly removed his hands from his face and studied it "It's going to be alright."
"How exactly? Yesterday I was a normal college student, and today I'm... I don't even know what I am anymore. And it's all your fault!"
"Ouch." I tipped over and landed on my butt, not leaving a lot of room between us.
I stayed silent, hoping he'd say something. Because I had no idea what to say.
"So shit has really hit the fan, huh?" I said, hoping that would lighten the mood a little.
"Saga, can you please just be honest with me here? What did you do?"
I frowned. "First of all, don't call me that again. Second, remember how I said that was kind of a long story? It really isn't that long." I exhaled and inhaled loudly. "I stole the recipe for immortality."
He looked at me with wide eyes. "You did what?"
"Yeah, it was pretty great." I gave me a crooked smile. "Well, I feel like going to Atlantic City. What do you say?"
"Hold on for a minute here. I don't have anything. And I can't just disappear from campus. They'll start searching for me."
"Oh, don't worry about that. Big Daddy has probably already wiped your existence from everybody's memories. You don't exist anymore. On paper anyways. Or in anyone's mind."
He shot him an angry look, his brows furrowing lower and lower.
"Come on man, don't look at me like that. It would have happened eventually. Just be happy I found you before Big Daddy did. You'll see. I am much more fun to be around."
"And that is supposed to make everything okay?" he asked with a sharp tone. I raised my eyebrows in surprise. "It would have happened eventually? I am twenty years old and my life just got flipped from 'I wish I had a friend' to 'I sure do hope I won't die in the next couple of hours', and all you think about is going to Atlantic City?!"
I shrugged, wearing an amused smile.
"You have two choices from here on out. You can either sit here and cry like a little bitch until somebody finds you and probably kills you. Or you could come to Atlantic City with me and take body tequila shots off a Victoria Secret models tits." I scrambled to his feet, stretching my entire body making it pop in the joints.
"So, what's it gonna be?"
