Chapter 24
Julia
"Keep your eyes on them!" Jason's voice yelling filled the car as he ordered a cultist to make sure that dad wasn't behind us.
"I'm watching them, Leader. They are still behind us. Speed up!" The cultist replied, looking through the window.
"Damn!" Jason snapped.
My heartbeat went faster and faster as time went on and I became anxious. I didn't want dad to catch us and force me to get back to him. All I wanted was to just live with Jason forever in peace. I loved him and I wasn't ready to give up on him to live with a liar. I crossed my fingers and hoped that Jason could lose them and escape. Dad was driving at breakneck speed behind us. It seemed almost impossible to lose him.
While I was lost in my deep thoughts, I felt something wet running down my cheeks. I realized that I was crying. Jason reached my face and wiped my tears away gently with his fingers. I looked at him, sadly, in fear, and anxious. He could read me and understood what I was thinking about. He held my hand and rubbed it softly with his thumb.
"Don't worry. I won't lose you, Julia. You will always be mine," Jason quietly said.
"I don't want to lose you."
"You won't."
He tightened his grip on mine, sighing sadly.
"Come on, leader. Faster! We almost lost them," The cultist shouted.
I looked behind to see dad struggling to catch Jason as he was driving really fast between the cars. I didn't know why I looked behind, but I just wanted to see him one last time. Jason managed to escape and dad's car was far away from ours, thankfully. I focused again on the road in front of us, and frowned as soon as I noticed a large school bus coming from the right side at a high speed. The traffic light was red, but Jason surely couldn't stop or dad would catch us instead. So he had to break the rules. I was so terrified because the scene of Jason driving at an insane speed while the traffic light was red, and a large bus also driving at an insane speed coming from the right side of the intersection, was horrible.
"Jason! Please slow down. I don't want to die. Please!" I wept.
"Don't worry. I got this."
Jason increased the car's speed even more and I automatically was pulled backwards. "Hold on," Jason yelled as he tried to avoid crashing with the bus.
I closed my eyes hard and kept sobbing nonstop. Suddenly, I felt the car veering sharply to the left and the sounds of horns filled the whole street, plus some people yelling in terror. The other drivers kept telling Jason off for what he just did, but they didn't understand that he had to. Just a few moments passed before I heard a big crash behind us. I immediately looked through the window to see that dad had a horrible accident with the bus and he couldn't avoid it.
"We finally lost them. Their car crashed with the bus," The cultist smirked.
"Finally!" Jason said in relief.
I was shocked after what I had just seen in front of my eyes. Yes, I hated my father but not to the level that made me wish death for him. He was my father after all. I just wanted to get away from him and not to see him die in front of my eyes. It differed. I wondered whether the boys were with him in the same car or not. I wouldn't cope with their death or injuries if they were with him. All I cared about were my friends.
"We have to move. We can't stay in the United States any longer. The police must be searching for us now," Jason stated.
"Where are we going to move?" I asked.
"I don't know. Canada maybe?"
"Canada?"
"Yeah, it's on the northern borders and we can move there quickly and easily."
I sighed and kept silent not really knowing how to respond. I didn't mind moving to Canada. I was sure that it was a very nice country and that we could live there safely. All that bothered me was that I had to leave the rest of my friends behind. I couldn't lose them, but at the same time, I didn't want to force them to leave their own families. It was their choice after all. I didn't even have the chance to check on them. I wasn't sure if they were in the same car with my father or not. I knew that I was going to miss them so much after leaving the states, but we had no other choice though. We couldn't risk staying here and getting arrested by the police. Finally, after four hours of driving, Jason stopped the car in front of a large house. The street was wide and dark.
"Where are we?" I asked, yawning from exhaustion.
"This is my dad's old house. I haven't sold it since he died. It always reminds me of him," Jason mumbled.
"I hope that I don't sound stupid to you, but I thought that you just lived in the hideout and didn't own any other places."
"Actually, every one of us has their own house. We don't really live in them. We just buy them for our wives and kids to live there," Jason explained.
"I got it then."
"Come on. Let's go. We don't have all night long."
"All right."
I quickly opened my door and got out of the car. As soon as my legs touched the floor, my body started to shiver. The weather was cold and I didn't have any jacket or coat.
"I'm really cold," I muttered, wrapping my arms around my chest to keep myself warm.
"Here," He said as he took off his own jacket and put it around my shoulders. "better?"
"Yes, it's so warm," I smiled.
Only a couple of minutes passed, then we spotted a car heading towards us. It was Sally and her boyfriend. He was kind of a slow driver but thankfully, he could escape from our dads with Sally successfully.
"Finally, we're safe now," Sally's boyfriend gasped as he climbed out of his car.
"Yeah, but there's one last step to do. Follow me," Jason said.
