Chapter 36: Ivan's Last Stand
Aaron opened the door the the station, laughing and goofing of with Aphmau, who was behind him.
When he stepped in, his blood pressure went through the roof.
The place was ransacked, every cabinet was open, every window. And every nook and cranny was filled with junk.
They searched the house for Aurora first, they had missed her on their outing.
She wasn't there.
Impact and Luna were beside the crib, whining loudly, and next to them in chairs were Garroth and Laurance.
"Where-" Aphmau was about to finish, when she saw the tears in their eyes.
"They took her, Oh God, they took her..." Garroth couldn't finish his sentence. He had resorted to sobbing.
"What, Garroth? What happened, where's Aurora?!" Aaron sprinted over to them, not caring about his ransacked house. He wanted his daughter.
"Here, T-They left this..." Garroth handed him a handwritten note, and Aaron's heart dropped.
Hey Love, Long time no see~
I want to see you again, it was awfully fun playing our little game, though I do admit that you weren't supposed to survive and be happy afterwards, I hoped that you would die alone like I planned. Oh well, We've taken your little girl, oh she's fine, but she'll make a wonderful addition to Ivan's collection when she's older~
P.S Bring the girl
Best wishes,
Jennifer and Ivan.
In the back was an address that he knew, it was close to where he first found Aphmau. And his insides boiled and he was filled rage.
"It's a trap. Ivan still wants Aphmau." Aaron said, his fist balling, and Laurance looked at him.
"Your not going." He said to Aphmau, and then turned to Garroth and Laurance.
"Watch her, make sure she doesn't leave." He grabbed his leather armor, and his energy rifle. And then grabbed his mask.
"No, if you go alone, you won't come back." Laurance said, standing up.
"I don't care." Aaron replied, his rifle flaring to life.
"You're willing to kill yourself to get revenge?" Garroth asked, holding back Aphmau from keeping Aaron there.
"No, I'm willing to kill myself for my family, for my daughter." He looked down at Aphmau and looked her right in the eyes.
"And for you." He slipped down his mask, gave a tiny second of hesitation. And turned around and kissed Aphmau, hard.
He then ran out the door, knowing exactly where to go.
After he was out of sight, Garroth let his sister go. And gave her his sword, and her old pistol.
"Give 'em hell for me." He gave her a hug, and she nodded, and ran out the door after Aaron, she saw the address. And knew where to go.
Laurance tossed one of his swords at Garroth, who caught it, and he grabbed his shield.
"Let's go."
Aaron was sprinting to the address on the paper and when he reached it. He turned on his heat vision goggles.
He scanned for Aurora's heat signature. And he found it, deep below ground in what he could only describe as the basement.
He also caught two others. And smiled manically. He had lost his sane mind.
His rifle flared to life with his hate. And he turned off the safety switch.
He shot the door and it was vaporized. He bolted up the stairs. And reached the room where the heat signatures were.
He was about to open the door when a voice in the back of his head said.
"Don't, It's a trap..."
To his surprise, it sounded a bit like Laurance. But instead he listened from the other side of the door.
He heard the beeping of turrets and realized if he had opened the door he would have been filled full of holes.
"He's down there, I heard him." He heard a voice, he recognized it as Ivan's.
"Of course he is, you took his kid. I'm surprised he hasn't bust through the door to kill us both yet." It was Jennifer's voice, his heart stopped, and then it was filled with hatred, he had to get his daughter back.
He knocked on the door and then hid behind the hallway corner. Ivan went out to let the turrets do their thing. Only to find no one there.
"He's messing with us. He knows it's a trap." Ivan said, leaving the door wide open.
"He's gotten smarter then, he was stupid when I played him." Jennifer replied, smirking.
"Well, I'm flattered that you speak so highly of me Jennifer...." Aaron had spoken through an broken air vent, and it carried his voice to them.
"A-Aaron!" She whipped around, expecting to see him, but it was just air.
"W-what? Where are you coward?!" Ivan screamed freaking out.
"I am everywhere. And no where at the same time... I am your worst nightmare.... I will make your death slow...." He had to stifle a laugh, he was mad and out of reason, but he wanted to mess with them first.
Jennifer screamed, and she pawed the air.
Aaron made his laugh high and cold and spoke again.
"Jennifer, you cannot break what is already broken. You left me to die.... you took my daughter.... and worst of all.......You don't feel remorse..."
"Please... No...." She slumped on the floor defeated.
Ivan was panicking, he couldn't figure out where his voice was coming from.
"Ivan.... that girl you stole from me.... is not my own...." Aaron talked slow and creepily, and he heard his own voice echo around him.
"Wait... No...." Ivan slumped over and listened.
"You have taken your own offspring... you did this.... your the one who put that demon on me, that Deathclaw...!" He started growling and yelling into the vent.
"Stop! Shut up, you have no control over me, I will get what I want!" Ivan yelled and screamed, his voice loud and panicked.
"You have no say anymore, you have no idea where I am. And you are at the mercy of your own turrets. If I reveal myself, the turrets will kill us all." Aaron laughed into the vent, his mind on Aurora.
"You have no control, I do, I rule everything! I rule over you... I rule over everyone. He yelled, his eyes showing fear.
"You are helpless, now you will see how you made Aphmau feel.... right before you die...." Aaron stepped out from the corner and the turrets fired up. Shooting Ivan who was standing in the doorway. He was shot full of holes and blood stained the walls.
He stepped back into place and started talking again.
"Let him be Jennifer, or you will join him." He said darkly into the vent.
"Please spare me Aaron, please. I'll leave you be, I'll help you get Aurora, just please don't kill me!!!" She yelled, crying.
"Hmmm... And why should I trust you...? I did once... and I have a very good reason just to end you right here." He felt tears go down his face, but he kept talking.
"I'm sorry!" She screamed, bracing herself against the wall.
Ivan was still alive, but only barely, he dragged himself out of the room with a handgun, if he was dying, he was going to take Aaron with him.
"Sorry doesn't heal scars, and it won't sway me." He said with a tone a finality.
Ivan had drug himself halfway down the stairs, he was advancing slowly on Aaron's position.
"Deactivate the turrets..." He said, sighing, he couldn't bring himself to kill her. Even after six years.
Ivan was almost there, he had raised his gun to shoot.
"Oh! Thank you! Thank you!" She slowly got up. And unhooked the turrets.
"Now! Before I change my mind-"
Krackow!
...
...
...
...
Ivan slumped over, dead. A gunshot trough his head.
"You owe me." Aphmau said, holding her pistol at Ivan.
"Well, looks like we're even then." Aaron laughed, until he realized Jennifer could still hear him.
"W-what now..." Jennifer said, terrified.
"Come to me..." Aaron said creepily, and he waited on the edge of the stairs. And Aphmau followed.
She looked out of the door, saw him in his mask, covered in blood. And then gulped.
She had blonde hair, green eyes. And was covered head to toe in badly made leather.
She stopped a few feet away from him and slowly said:
"A-Aaron..., is t-that you?" She stammered, having a hard time believing what she was seeing.
He nodded. Cocking his rifle and pointing it at her back.
"Leave, and never come near me or my family again." He said in the clearest, uncaring tone he could muster.
"O-okay... uh... here's the key.... I'm gone!" She ran out as fast as she could, leaving a green piece of cloth behind.
Aaron picked it up, and put it in his pocket.
Aphmau stared in the direction Jennifer went.
"So that was your ex...." She grabbed his hand and led him downstairs, she know where she was going.
At this point Aaron had gone into shock, he hadn't realized what he was doing, what he had seen, he had tried to kill someone out of cold blood. And Aphmau finished him off.
He let go of Aphmau's hand and ran down the stairs, unlocked the door. And found himself in a makeshift dungeon. And laying, face first on the stone floor. Was his daughter.
She wasn't moving.
He ran up to her, tears staining his eyes. And he gently turned her over in his arms.
She was cut and hungry. But she moved at the sight of him. And she gave him a weak giggle.
"Aurora, I'm so sorry this happened to you. Daddy will never let this happen again." He kissed her forehead and turned to Aphmau.
She flew into his arms, snuggling against him and Aurora.
"Don't ever, scare me like that again. I thought I had lost you for good." She was talking to both Aaron and Aurora.
"I'm sorry... I just... wanted to save her, I don't want to think about what they would have done to her if I hadn't." He hugged back, kissing Aphmau's forehead and taking her hand.
"Let's go home. I... think I'm done with the wasteland for awhile... until I have to go on another run for food." He added the last bit hesitantly.
"Yeah, please, I just, wanna go home."
