jimmy's WriterTalk (1): how to write romance advice
Welcome to Jimmy's WriterTalk, which is where I basically give you (ramble to you) advice about various writing topics and hope you understand!
Today's topic is: how to write romance, imported directly from halfasleepoverdue_89's profile!
Q: how does one write romance
please (i say this like it's time sensitive, actually i'm just confused)
((im better at killing people))
A: you draw all that pain and emotion from real life emotions either from your frustrated gay emotions, frustrated shipper/fujoshi emotions, or frustrated emotions of not being to have 2-D people that do not exist in real life :D (at least, that's how I operate) Uh I'm not the best at writing the romance (it ends up being kind of, super, reallllllly awkward?) since I like the pINING. And the subtle romantic signs. And the denSITY *evil laughing* (don't judge I am a frustrated bi) Anywhosss yeah uh that's my pretty bad advice but it's actually okay? since it works for me to channell all my emotions onto my writing (why do you think I like to torture my characters so much-) since it ends up sounding kind of more, I dunno, 'from the heart' as they say? (It also depends on how people perceive you as, though) It also depends on what kind of romance you're trying to write, like what stage (established relationship, subtle flirting, mutual pining, dense idiots, feelings realization, etc...) Tell me what stage and I shall provide some more hopefully helpful info ^ ^
If you're really in a twist turn to Google but it's not advised since all the information can be overwhelming and Google's sites kind of end up being more on the 'typical' side. Try to go a new, quirky path! After all it's your own story so you can twist the romance around as much as you want, your definition of 'romance' could be different than someone else's, and that's perfectly fine! It also depends on who the people the romance is happening between, like depending on their personalities and their circumstances, the romance you write could change. It could be those types of things where they come together to mutually heal from past scars, or they already realized it but other complications stop them from hookin' up, or where it's forBIDDEN~ (ooooo I LOVE a good old forbidden relationship!!) or a really twisted one, or-I have a lot of romance ideas. But tt's all up to you in the end! (and who your characters are like. it's important to make sure the romance you write doesn't like completely stray from what your characters are like, like it doesn't make much sense to me to write a story about a 100% lesbian woman trying to find love and she ends up falling in love with the male matchmaker)
Again, if you need help you can always ask some friends you know are actually good at and are well versed in writing romance, or! My personal preferred method, read a bunch of books/comics/etc. and learn from them. Romance doesn't have to be the cloying, meddlesome type where it interferes with the plot, it could be natural and sweet and a background factor and depending on the characters it happens with, you don't even have to make them kiss. (my biggest example with this is Kaz and Inej from Six of Crows, at first I was upset that they didn't kiss but then a friend commented, "Oh, I actually liked how they didn't kiss at the end, it symbolized their entire, y'know, selves and their relationship, if you get what I mean?" and I was like "HOLY SHIET THAT IS SO PROFOUND-") So uh I guess what I'm trying to say is, romance comes and means differently to different people, you do you! However established relationship is a whooooole different story. You can choose how you want the romance to be shown, but you should prepare maybe for some frustrated internal screaming when you try to put the fluff to paper (or maybe it's just me) My advice for that is simply, "READ BOOKS WHERE THAT HAPPENS. AND ACTUALLY TRY GOOGLE THIS TIME, BECAUSE I GOT NOTHIN." Again this allll goes back to what type of characters the romance is revolving around, heck as long as it seems like you know what you're doing (or maybe not and stating that is fine, it's part of the charm~) and people like it it's fine! (or at least to me)
However, I should warn you, ROMANCE WILL BECOME VERY HARD AND FRUSTRATING TO WRITE IF YOU DON'T DO AT LEAST SOME PLANNING OUT BEFOREHAND. (This is especially important if the main genre you're writing this romance!) In a way it's kind of like mystery writing, you have to set things up in a certain way so that, like cards, they fall perfectly when you tap one over. If not you might find yourself having to go back and revise something that's already been 'set in stone' and have to go through the trouble of explaining the change to people who've already read the original version. That can be troublesome in many ways than one (I should know...) so to avoid that I really suggest you plan out at least four, five, six important points or things you want to happen in a romance you're writing. You can make things up as you go, but even I the person who isn't good at writing romance without wincing a lot and looking through romance stories know that there at least a few 'keystone' points that either cement the romance and make people satisfied at the conclusion (although there is a certain charm to open/ambiguous endings, they leave the readers wanting more and leave it up to their imaginations, etc.~) and so the writing, above all, feelings smooth. But it should be noted like I stated a lot earlier, it also depends on the writer. No romance writer has the same ideas for their romance as another, so feel free to do whatever you want! I'm just rambling off some ideas here ^v^' You can make it so that one person is confessed to at the very beginning, but they have to endure many hardships and hurdles before they can actually hook up without any 'wrinkles' as they say. (probably just me, though) You can make it so that they're complete enemies, or their relationship is forbidden by the laws of the society, or can't hook up 'cause one of them lost their memory, or one is still hung up over an ex... there are e.n.d.l.e.s.s. possibilities i can list...
Holy shiet that was only meant to be a quick thing but it turned out to be a several paragraphs long lecture, wow I think I actually like giving writing advice! Huh! (whether or not it's usEFUL, now, that's a different question...) I could go on but then I'd just be repeating myself and rambling on and on forever and I've already spent like that ten, fifteen minutes earnestly thinking and telling you my thoughts??? Wow, I think I got the professor instincts from my dad! Anywhosss, thanks for tuning in to Jimmy's WriterTalk today, if you got through all that in one go here is a reward *gives you some cookies* I hope that helped, overdue!!!~ <333
(And to whoever stuck around I also hope that helped and I hope that made sense ;P)
