The Island

On an uninhabited island strewn across its empty beach is a young girl completely knocked out. She has very long curly brown hair with purple highlights, pinned back in low pigtails. The girl is dressed in a simple purple tank top covered by a light, pink jacket with soaked black sweatpants. Upon her wrist sits two hair bows and a purple bandana around her upper arm. The leaves of the trees rustle, startling the girl enough to awaken her. She slowly opens her eyes, revealing them to be brown, and sits up. All around her are all sorts of different animal noises, that she's not fully familiar with. Looking around all that's seen is sand, water, and a forest of green. The girl's eyes widen, remembering how she got in this predicament. The girl was on a cruise and a vigorous storm started.

She and her two friends, Shane and Lucas, that accompanied her on this cruise were heading to the pool along with some other teenagers from the cruise. The ship was rocking more than usual and the boat was lacking all the people as they headed to the top deck to go swimming. They probably should've taken that as a sign something was wrong. The group arrived at the top deck, stepping out and realizing the disaster happening before them. The crew noticed them and yelled at them to head inside to their rooms, but it was too late. That was when a huge wave swept them off the ship and into the violent ocean below.

Before the whole group was out of the girl's sight, she surrounded each person in a protective bubble. The bubbles caused each member encased to pass out and stay asleep until they reach a safe place like an island, bursting right before they open their eyes or anyone that is nearby besides the caster.

A faint shout of a crew member saying 'no' is heard before the girl falls asleep herself.

Shaking away the vague memory, she stands up, groaning as she does so and revealing her to be around five feet tall. Collecting her thoughts, she begins to walk around, looking for any signs of her friends and hoping those bubbles she casted kept them alive.

Alright, you've trained for something like this. Find things washed up that could possibly help me survive.

The girl looks down at her appearance, annoyed at having wet sweatpants. She decides to pull them off, revealing her to be wearing shorts underneath. She takes off her light jacket and rings out both pieces of clothing. Once she finishes, the girl drapes them over her shoulders and continues along the beach, keeping an eye out for her friends or washed up items. Spotting something ahead, she rushes up and picks it up, discovering it to be a khaki colored messenger bag. The girl opens it up to see if anything is inside. Digging through the whole bag, she only finds a small bottle of sunscreen, another bandana, and a pair of sunglasses in one of the zippers. She sighs, stuffing her clothes inside before she straps it over her shoulder and continuing down the beach.

"Shane! Lucas!" she calls out repeatedly. After a half hour, the girl sees a bubble up ahead and rushes up to it, finding it to withhold her close friend. "Lucas!"

Blond with a simple short but long cut, tall, mesmerizing green eyes, sexy, and muscles. This is the way the girl would describe Lucas. She's thought he was angelic since the day they met. The two are in the same grade, but he's one year older at sixteen. They don't go to the same school, so they don't know each other as much as she would like. He is wearing a blue and white striped tank top and navy blue bathing suit bottoms.

She kneels down next to him and pops the bubble. She places her ear against his chest, listening for the beating of his heart. His heart beat is slow.

With the heart beating this slow a normal person would be dead. There is something that's keeping him alive, but I don't know what, it's not normal.

The girl summons up some power, places her hands on his chest, and heals him. All the internal damage heals and his heart returns to a normal beat again.

He just needed a little boost, even though I think he would have healed gradually on his own. I'm glad he's gonna be okay, but I need to keep an eye on him. I feel he is hiding a big secret, something that people would never believe unless shown, and the same kind of secret that I keep.

The girl takes his body and pulls it up away from the water to the shade then decides to wait as he comes to.

A short while later, Lucas, eventually opens his eyes. Blinking a few times before his eyes adjust, his eyes make a blurry outline of the girl next to him. "Kat...ima?" Lucas says, slowly sitting up.

The girl's name is Katima, which means powerful daughter. The name which fits her perfectly. Most people call her Kat for short.

"I'm so glad you're okay. You had me worried," Kat says.

"Yeah, me too," Lucas sighs, laughing a little. "So... Where are we? We didn't get left at the Bahamas, did we? Where are our moms?"

"No. You don't remember?" Kat asks concerned.

"Remember what?" Lucas asks.

"We were swept into the sea," Kat explains, looking downcast. "I don't know where we are. It looks like it's uninhabited."

His eyes widen and looks to the sky. "Holy shit."

"No kidding," she sighs.

"Are we the only ones?"

"You're the only person I've found so far," she admits. "I've been looking for a few hours."

"Then I guess we should start searching," Lucas says.

They both stand up and start walking.

"Shane!" they both yell. "Where are you?!"

They continue to yell his name over and over again, but with no reply. Kat continues to keep track of the shore to see if she can find anything else that could've been washed ashore. Then somebody comes out from the forest.

"Kat? Lucas?" Shane says.

"Shane!" Lucas and Kat yell at the same time.

Brunet, brown eyes, skinny, chin dimple, smartass, and a little shorter than Kat. Blue T-shirt and yellow bathing suit bottoms. He is the youngest, of the three, at twelve.

As people might know, if they've ever been on a cruise before that there's a place for teens to hang out, at least the ones that Kat's been on, usually called the teen's club. That's where the three met the rest of the group. Even though Shane and Tony, who you'll know later, are below age. Most teen clubs are for ages 13-18. The group of teens all hail from Georgia and were all on vacation for spring break.

Lucas, Shane, and Kat already knew each other before the cruise. Their mothers all work together and are good friends, so they naturally hung out together on the ship and that's where they met all the others.

"So you two weren't making out were you?" Shane asks.

"Seriously, Shane! For the millionth time no! He has a girlfriend!" Kat scoffs.

The sad truth is revealed.

"Damn, how many times do we have to tell you that? It's getting annoying," Lucas says annoyed.

Shane cackles evilly, earning a smack from Kat on the back of the head hard, but not enough to severely hurt him. Cause if she did, his head might rip off.

"Owww..." Shane says, rubbing the back of his head.

"Let's look for the others," Kat says, ignoring the glaring daggers Shane is sending her way.

They start to call out for the others when Kat sees two figures running down the beach towards them.

"Kat! Lucas! Shane!" Johnny yells, waving his hands back and forth rapidly.

"Johnny! Zack!" Kat shouts back.

Johnny, blond, green eyes, little chubby, and a little taller than Kat. Zack, brunet, brown eyes, quiet, tall, and bigger than Johnny. They are best friends and both are fourteen.

"Glad we aren't the only ones on this island," Zack sighs, sounding relieved.

"Yeah, and hopefully the rest of the group is here too," Kat says.

"More like hopefully they're safe," Johnny sighs with a slight pant in his voice. "We're stranded and there's nowhere to go."

"Yeah, I don't think anyone lives here," Shane says. "I didn't see anything or anyone when I was in the forest."

Kat closes her eyes and takes a whiff of the area. I don't smell any human life on this island besides us and the others we're looking for. We really are on an uninhabited island. She listens for any human like movements.

"We should continue to look for the others," Lucas says, interrupting her concentration. "I have a feeling that the three brothers are here along with the nerd."

The five of them begin to start yelling for the others.

"Do you think they're in the forest like I was?" Shane asks.

"Did you see them?" Johnny asks.

"No, obviously."

"Shane! Johnny!" another voice shouts, running up the beach.

They each turn to find Erwin, the nerd, running up to them.

Erwin, brunet, brown eyes, tall, glasses, fat, quiet, creepy, and a complete nerd. He's clearly out of shape because he is panting hard. He is the oldest at eighteen. Kat tries to be nice to him as much as possible, but he's a total weirdo and not because he's a nerd because he kinda stalks them. He gets on Kat's nerves and she's afraid she might go off on him at some point.

"I'm... so glad... I found... you guys..." Erwin gasps, kneeling over completely out of breath.

"Dumbass, you didn't have to run..." Shane says under his breath, ordering a smack on the head again.

Shane shoots Kat a cold glare, and she sends him a colder glare back.

"Don't be a little bitch," she mouths to him.

Lucas cackles obviously enjoying our banter. Shane quickly shoots Lucas a mean look then looks away rubbing his head mumbling like Kat can't hear all the bad names he is calling her. Kat rolls her eyes like she didn't hear.

"It's nice to see you made it too," Johnny says. "Are you hurt at all?"

"No," Erwin replies.

"It's weird how we don't have any cuts or bruises," Zack admits.

That's cause I saved your asses. Kat continues forward, looking for the three brothers.

"Hey, Kat," Lucas calls out, following next to her. "I've been meaning to ask, how did you get that bag?"

"It was washed up on the beach," she admits.

"Anything good in it?"

"Small thing of sunscreen, bandana, and sunglasses," she sighs. "That along with my jacket and sweatpants."

"So, basically useless?"

"Basically."

The others make their way up to the two, and they all begin to shout for the remaining members.

The three brothers Jason, Tony and Tyler eventually show up.

Jason and Lucas look very much alike, though Jason's biceps are slightly larger. He is the oldest brother at sixteen. Tony has brown hair and blue eyes. He's skinny with a little muscle and a little taller than Katima. He is younger than Shane at ten but he acts a lot younger, obviously he's the one that gets babied the most in the family. Tyler has brown hair and green eyes. He's around the same muscle as Lucas. He's also taller than Tony but shorter than Jason. Tyler is the same age as Kat at fifteen.

"Looks like we're the last ones," Jason says.

"Wait, what about that other girl, Lizzy?" Erwin asks.

That girl is the reason how they learned that Erwin is a total creeper. He even tried to kiss her.

"No, remember, she didn't want to go to the pool with us. She said it would ruin her makeup," Kat says.

Lizzy wasn't the popular type girl that's like, 'oh my God my makeup.' She was more like a Gothic like girl that didn't want to ruin her fake eyelashes. She was really fun to be honest. Not the creepy depressed kinds. Well, she might've been but she didn't show it.

"Oh yeah, that's right," Johnny says, turning towards Erwin.

"Darn..." Erwin says.

The group all sits down on the beach in a circle with Lucas to the left of Kat and Shane on her right.

"This sucks... What are we gonna do?" Johnny says.

"What if nobody ever finds us? What if we can't go home? Will we all die here!?" Tony says, freaking out a little.

Everybody starts panicking. Saying what if this and that happens. Kat looks toward Lucas, and he doesn't seemed panicked a bit. Lucas' gaze is looking up toward the sky. Kat looks up to try and see what Lucas is looking at, but finds nothing there.

He couldn't be... what I think he is... is he? It's possible... maybe that's why he was still alive on the beach. I mean it would make a little sense he is adopted... But I would've noticed it sooner? Right?

Everyone continues to freak out as Kat continues to look at Lucas. He sighs and looks down finally realizing her gaze. He looks a little surprised and quickly looks away.

His ears are red... Is he... embarrassed? She looks away and pays attention to the group still freaking out. They still haven't resolved this... what a pain... guess I need to take charge. Kat stands up annoyed.

"Shut up!" she yells, everybody goes quiet and turns towards her looking a little shocked. Oops, I guess that was a little bit of my scary voice... She sighs but continues, "We are not going to die here! We first need to calm down. We always need to stay calm and be positive because if we don't we might go crazy and kill one another. It looks like we are on an uninhabited island, and we need to have clean water, food, shelters, and two fires. One to cook and one for signaling." She walks up to the forest and grabs some of the big sticks laying there. She walks back to everybody and stick the sticks in the middle of the little circle. "This is where we will meet back up. We need to split up and look to see if anything else washed up from the boat," she says.

"Wait, wait, wait," Shane says, gesturing a stop sign with every wait, "Who put you in charge?"

"I did. Since everbody else was acting like a child that lost their mommy," she shrugs. "Guess I'll be the leader. Smart ass."

Kat looks around at everyone and they don't not agree. Seeing this Shane quits talking and pouts to himself.

(Unedited vvv)

"Anyway," I say, "Erwin and Shane you stay here and spell SOS with rocks. You need to make it big enough that a plane can read it. Jason, Tony, and Tyler go that way down the beach and grab anything that was washed up from the ship, even if it doesn't look useful. Zack and Johnny do the same thing except the other way. This island is big, it will be a long walk. Circle around the whole island so you should pass each other at some point. Lucas, you and me will go into the forest to find resources. We will all meet back here."

"Sounds good to me," Johnny says.

Everyone nods in agreement and we all go our separate ways to do the things I assigned to us.

Lucas and I head into the forest and straight away we see about a million vines.

"We can use all these vines to tie the shelter together," I say.

"Yeah," Lucas says, "And we can use all the coconuts as bowls."

"Good idea," I say.

As we walked and talked about what we need to do we come across a big, beautiful lagoon with a waterfall.

"Wow..." Lucas says.

"Yeah..." I say with awe.

I walk up to the edge and dip my hands in. I cup water in my hands and raise it to my mouth.

"It's fresh water," I say drinking some.

"Good," Lucas says.

We walk up next to the waterfall and discover a small indent into the wall. Perfect to set your clothes down on and wash off under the waterfall.

"We can bathe here," I say. Then it hit me... "I'm the only girl..."

Lucas looked at me and laughed.

"Did you really just realize that?" Lucas says.

"You better not peek!" I yell.

"I wont, I won't!" Lucas yells laughing, "You have to worry about the others more."

"Shit..." I say full of remorse.

We climb to the top of the waterfall to find a stream. On either side of the stream, there are all sorts of fruit from trees to bushes.

"Wow, what luck... there's apples, peaches, bananas, dragonfruit, papayas, mangos, strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries!" I yell excitedly looking at all the fruit.

"You look happy," Lucas says watching me.

"Of course I'm happy. Are you not?" I ask.

"Yeah, I'm happy we have food," Lucas says.

"Now all we need is a bathroom area, fires, a camp, and shelters," I say.

We head back into the forest to find an open area for a camp. We walked a little further and found a clearing big enough for a camp.

"This is perfect for the camp area," I say.

"Yeah," Lucas says.

"Let's find a place for the bathroom," I say.

Walking around we find a small spot far enough from the camp area that's just perfect for a bathroom.

"I guess our duty is done," Lucas says laughing.

"I see what you did there," I say and laugh too.

We laugh and walk back to the place agreed on to meet back up with everyone.

When we got back to the beach we see lots of rocks on the ground, spelling SOS, with a passed out Shane and Erwin.

"You finished already?" I ask amazed.

"Yeah... we finished..." Shane says heavily.

(That was faster than I thought. They can't be... No, surely not.)

"I'm glad you actually did it, but this is faster than I expected," I say.

"I knew... you would kill us... if we didn't do anything," Shane says smugly, slowly sitting up.

"You sure as hell got that right," I say.

We all laugh. Lucas and I sit down with them.

"So did you guys find what you were looking for?" Erwin asks.

"Yes, we found everything we need. We'll show you when everyone returns," I say.

While we waited for everyone we talked about random things. After a while everyone was back with all sorts of different things in their hands.

"What did you find?" Lucas asks them.

"We found a brush, a milk carton, and a clip," Johnny says putting the items in front of me in a pile.

"We found yarn and a survival kit," Jason says.

"A survival kit?!" I say a little louder than planned. "What's inside?"

"I don't know we can't open it. It has some sort of lock on it," Tyler says.

"Lock? Let me see it," I say. (A first aid kit with a lock? How unresourceful...)

Tyler hands it to me. It's a combination lock. I put my fingers on top of the dials moving my fingers very quickly trying all the different possible combinations. Everyone watching me intently. After a couple trys it clicks open.

"Whoa, how did you do that?! It's like your fingers moved at an inhuman speed!" Johnny yells.

At Johnny's words Lucas looks at me bewildered.

(I can't tell them the truth ever.)

"I-I am very good with my hands," I say.

"That sounds wrong," Johnny says holding back his laughter.

"Eww! Not like that!! I can type fast and play piano and cut things like vegetables fast," I say hurriedly. "Get your head out of the gutter!"

Lucas seems convinced and looks towards the kit.

(Why did he look so interested like he was expecting me to say something else. Does he know? Is he like me?)

"Ok, ok, you don't have to be all defensive I was kidding," Johnny says.

Giving him a whatever look, I ignore him and open the kit.

"There's three knives, a razor blade, a pack of band aids, sunscreen, ointment for cuts, two things of gauze wraps, two things of athletic tape wrap, a flashlight, a flare gun, matches, extra batteries, scissors, and duct tape," I say.

I take out my two ponytails and fixed my hair. I took off the two hairbows off my wrist, the bandana from my ankle, and I get out the bag.

"And we got four hairbows, another bandana, and a little bag," I say, " Grab your things and follow us."

I motion for Lucas and he stands up. I stand up too grabbing my things and we head into the forest. Everyone else slowly follows behind us.

We walk into the forest and show them the lagoon. Everyone's expressions are in awe. I giggled.

"This is where we will bathe," Lucas says.

"Also, I am a girl so I better not catch any peepers!" I say sternly.

They all just laughed. (That makes me feel a little uneasy... I really wanna be like 'I'm a royal princess you know, don't peek unless you wanna die.' Of course, I can't tell them that.)

We then led the group to the top of the waterfall.

"This is the grove and it's where we will get food and water. We do need to look around for some vegetables though," I say.

Next we led them to the bathroom area.

"We will be digging a big hole here to use for the bathroom, " Lucas says.

"And I will later look for big leaves that won't irritate the skin to use for.. wiping ourselves," I say awkwardly.

Finally, we lead them to the big opening to where the camp will be made.

"This is were we are going to make camp. Where the shelters and the cooking fire will be. Let's put the found items on the stump over there," I say pointing to the tree stump.

We walk over and set all the items on the stump. (Huh? Where is the actual tree? There can't be a stump without a tree.) I investigate the stump, tracing my fingers along it, feeling the way it came off. I give a small inaudible gasp. (This was cut clean off by-)

"Now we need to make a fire right?" Tony asks interrupting my thoughts.

"That's right," I say. "Lucas, go get dead leaves. Erwin, Zack, and Johnny go get rocks to outline the fire pit. Jason, Tony, Shane, and Tyler go get some dry wood."

"What about you?" Shane asks annoyed.

"I'm digging the hole," I say.

"How are you gonna do that?" Johnny asks, "You don't have a shovel."

"I guess I'll do it with my hands," I state.

"No, let me do that it will cut your pretty little hands," Jason says.

(He's such a player...)

"Don't worry I'm not your normal kind of girl that cares much about that stuff. I can tough it out," I say, "Now, shoo, shoo." I motion my hands in a go away gesture.

"Alright, alright," Johnny says.

They leave and I take off my jacket and sweatpants, setting them on the stump too.

Once they were out of sight I trace my finger along the ground outlining where the hole will be. Once done tracing I lift up the dirt and with the flick of my finger I place it by the edge of the forest, in doing so I created the perfect hole. I didn't even get my hands dirty.

(Wait... I should coat my hands in dirt a little so they won't get suspicious...) I think as I walk over to where I put the dirt. I crouch down and stick my hands in and out of the dirt making my hands dusty, yay...

While still crouched down I sense someone behind me and quickly stand up turning around, about to get in a defensive position when I see who it is.

There stood Lucas behind me holding a bunch of big leaves.

"Oh, it's just you. You scared me there for a second," I say.

"Who else would I be?" Lucas says teasingly.

"Haha, I don't know maybe a bear?" I say.

"A bear? Are you saying you would fight a bear?" Lucas asks.

(I'm mean I have before but it wasn't your normal bear. It was a bear with powers much tougher than a normal bear. Of course I can't tell him that I have before though.)

"I mean I might if I really had to," I say jokingly.

"Haha, you're crazy," Lucas says.

"Haha, yeah... You know you're one of the first people that have actually snuck up on me. Most people can't, I always know they're there," I say.

Lucas tenses up a little. He laughs awkwardly.

(Suspicious.)

"I guess, I'm just light on my feet," Lucas says nervously.

"Huh... interesting," I say.

(I don't buy it but I'll go along with that for now.)

"You can put the leaves here," I say walking towards the hole I made.

When we get by the hole I notice Lucas' eyes widen.

"H-how did you do this so fast? It's like a perfect hole. How did you even do it?" Lucas asks, suspiciously.

I giggled. "That's my special little secret," I say as I wink at him with my finger on my mouth in a quiet motion.

Lucas pouts covering the hole with the leaves and as if right on cue everyone else shows up with the things they went to go get.

"We got the rocks!" Johnny shouts.

"Do you have to be so damn loud?" Shane fusses.

"We got the logs and sticks!" Jason shouts.

Shane clearly annoyed pouts to himself.

They walk over, put the sticks on top of the leaves and outline it with rocks.

Erwin grabs the matches and hands them to me.

"Thank you," I say.

(I can normally lite this with my finger acting as a lighter but I can't show them that.)

I take out one of the matches, light it up and throw it into the pit. The fire pit lit up with a nice flame big enough to keep us warm tonight.

Zack grabs the logs and sits them upright in the shape of a teepee. We didn't want to sit on the ground so we went out to grab four big logs and placed them on each side of the fire.

*grrrumble*

We look around and see that Tyler's face is red from embrassment.

I laugh and say, "Well, I guess that means it's time to eat!"

We all head to the grove to get food to eat. We get arms full of fruit and return to the camp and sit around the fire.

Lucas and I we're sitting on a log. Jason, Tony, and Tyler who I'm going to call the Trio we're on another log and the Duo, Johnny and Zack, on another. Leaving Shane and Erwin on the last log.

Everyone was munching away at their food. I occasionally put more wood on the fire.

Night came fast so I put the last bit of wood on the fire to last all night. We pushed the logs back and lay down by the fire to go to sleep.

...

Question: If you had the choice to be able to take 3 things with you to an uninhabited island what would they be?
