Idiots
The next morning after I wake up I realized I was looking at the sky.
(I'm wasn't dreaming I really am on an uninhabited island.)
I try to move my legs to stand up, but I'm met with someone hugging my leg. I slowly sit up and am met with Shane's sleeping face hugging my leg. I slowly slip my leg out of Shane's grip trying not to wake him. When I get my leg out of Shane's grasp he stirs a little.
I stand up and look around. Looks like I'm the first one up. I look down at Shane's face he's so adorable when he sleeps. I look around at everyone else's faces. Aww, they are so cute they look so peaceful and innocent.
I get up and go to collect more wood and leaves for the fire. The fire went out so I light my finger like a lighter and put my hand in the fire pit to start the flame again.
I decide we need weapons so I set out to grab nine big sticks. After collecting strong, sturdy sticks, I return and grab the razor blade to start and sharpen the sticks very keen. I finish sharpening all the sticks and, still, no one was up yet.
I make my way down to the beach and climb up the coconut trees shaking off the coconuts. I grab some vines and quickly tie them together to make a net. I finish the net, put all the coconuts inside, wrap them up, and head back towards the camp.
When I got to the camp, still nobody was up. I set the coconuts by the stump and left, off to find a big flat rock to use for a stove.
I walk through the forest and come across a nice smooth big flat rock. (Perfect!) I lift it up, with it probably being about fifty pounds. It's like a feather to me but would be harder for normal people. Then I head back to the camp.
I get back and lay the rock across the fire pit. I turn around and look at everybody, still, nobody is up yet. They must be really tired from yesterday. I grab a nearby sharp rock and head over toward the coconuts.
I start opening all the coconuts to use for bowls. I end up with twenty bowls. (Damn, I hate coconuts.)
I believe I might be allergic to the smell. The smell always makes my head hurt.
I pour as much coconut juice as I can in the milk carton. It would be good for cooking with later.
I decide to go hunting. I head into the forest, but I only find a bird's nests so I take the eggs and put them in the bag. (I'm sorry little birds, please forgive me.) I gather enough eggs to feed all of us and then I head back to the camp.
When I get back to the camp, I set the bag full of eggs down a little ways from the fire. I grab the net and put all of the coconuts in it then I head to the lagoon. At the lagoon, I wash out all of the coconuts then travel back to the camp.
I grab the eggs, crack them, put them in a cocobowl, stir it with a stick, and pour it on the stove. I'm just gonna make scrambled eggs. I move the eggs around with a stick to fully cook them. When the eggs start to smell good, everyone begins to stir a little in their sleep. That was when someone woke up.
"Mmmm, that smells good," Lucas says half awake.
"Good morning!" I say cheerfully.
"G' mornin'," Lucas says. He looks around the camp and then looks at me. "You've been busy," Lucas says. "You should have woken me up, I would've helped."
"No, I wanted you all to sleep after yesterday and plus you guys looked peaceful," I say.
He turns away and says, "Don't push yourself."
"I know, I won't," I say.
"So watcha making?" Lucas asks.
"Scrambled eggs they're done if you want some," I say.
"Sure, I'd love some," Lucas says.
I put some eggs into a coconut and hand it to Lucas.
"Here you go."
He laughs and I look at him confused.
"Never thought I would be eating eggs out of a coconut," Lucas says.
"Haha, that's true," I say laughing too.
I hear another person shift and get up. It's Tyler.
"Mornin', want some eggs?" I ask.
"Mornin', sure..." Tyler says rubbing his eyes.
I put some in a coconut and gave it to him. He takes it and looks at me funny.
"Sorry, we don't have bowls and utensils so just use your hands or put it to your mouth or eat it using your toes," I say.
Everyone else slowly gets up and eats some eggs. The only one not up is Shane. This is strange he was usually the first one up on the boat and would come to wake me and Lucas up from our room.
Yes, and I say room, Lucas slept in the same room as me. Long story short Shane wanted to have a sleepover in my room and surprisingly my mother excepted, but she stayed with us of course. Then turns out Shane's mother wouldn't let him so Lucas just did and he kept staying. I didn't mind though I liked watching him sleep. Not in a weird way though.
I decide to put some eggs in a coconut and I walk over to Shane. I nudge his shoulder a little to not startle him.
"Shane... Shaaane?" I say softly, "Come on get up it's time to eat."
"...K..aa..t..ii..ma." Shane says sleepily.
"!!! Shane are you up?" I say.
"...zzz..." Shane breathes in even breaths.
(What's he dreaming about? Why did he say my name? I would like to take a look, but I haven't learned how to look into dreams yet...)
I raise the eggs by his nose and see it twitch then he sits upright. I give him the bowl.
"Come and join the others," I say.
After breakfast I announce what we're doing today.
"We have some more work to do today. We need meat and shelters, we can't keep sleeping like we did last night. We won't be rescued anytime soon, as it seems, so we're gonna need some. This morning before anyone woke up I started the fire again, I made spears to hunt with, I made a net, made bowls out of coconuts, made a grill, and made breakfast. It's not my turn anymore. So Lucas and the Trio go get nice big sticks so we can make huts. Shane, the Duo, and Erwin go get vines," I say.
They leave and I head to the lagoon to wash the coconuts. I finish washing the coconuts and head back towards the camp. On my way back I hear a distant commotion. (What the hell?)
"Dammit, that hurts!" Johnny yells.
"If you didn't swing from that vine this wouldn't have happened, dumbass!" Shane yells.
"I told you it would break..." Erwin says.
I walked towards were all the yelling is happening. I find Johnny sitting on the ground and Shane standing yelling at him. Both are yelling back and forth at each other about something. I also see Zack and Erwin standing by on the conversation with worried looks on their faces. I smell blood. I walk up to them.
"What's going on?" I ask.
I must have startled them because they all jumped a little then stood in front of Johnny so I couldn't see him.
"N-nothing! Just gettin' vines just like you said!" Shane says.
"Really? 'Cause to me it looks like you're fussing with each other and hiding something from me?" I state.
They look down and slowly move sideways. I walk up to Johnny. His leg has a big gash in it and it's bleeding a lot.
(This is deep... Shit... I can't use my healing powers, maybe I can, but through a medicine I can make with herbs. Considering this place has the right herbs and plants.)
"What happened?" I ask turning towards Zack, Erwin, and Shane.
"Well, dumbass, here decided he wanted to be like Tarzan and swing from a vine," Shane says.
"The vine snapped, he fell, and a place where a tree branch was broken off cut his leg open," Zack says.
"I told him the vine wasn't strong enough," Erwin says.
I turn back towards Johnny.
"I would smack you so hard right now for doing something so stupid, but since you're in pain I'll wait till you're healed," I say.
"Ooo, tough luck her smacks hurt. I should know," Shane says jokingly, but not really.
I turn towards Shane. "Shut up, before you get slapped, too. This is already enough of a pain in the ass and I don't need you becoming one too," I say.
Shane pouts and shuts his mouth. Zack looks like his about to laugh and Shane shoots him a glare. I look back at Johnny.
"You better hope your dumbass that medical herbs grow here because this cut is deep," I say.
"Wait, can't we just use the cut ointment?" Johnny asks.
"That doesn't disinfect it, it just helps heal it a little, but medical herbs are a lot better and this is too big we don't have enough for this," I say, "Anyway, Shane and Erwin get the vines, Zack get the coconuts. I'll carry Johnny. Let's head to the camp."
I lift Johnny into my arms and start walking. Then I notice nobody is following and Johnny staring at me with wide eyes. I turn around and look at everyone behind me. All of their eyes are wide too.
(Shit, I didn't even think. This is not normal for a human girl... I'm just so used to lifting things. Lifting him is nothing compared to what I usually lift.)
Johnny speaks up first."U-um..." Johnny says unsure of what to say. I mean why wouldn't he this is shocking to see for a girl my size.
"Sorry, I lift people up a lot for my training. I am a lifeguard," I say.
(Huge lie. I don't know the first thing about being a lifeguard.)
"I weigh a lot though... S-so how can you lift me when you're so small?" Johnny asks.
"Ha, you're like a feather compared to what I have to lift," I say. (That's half true.)
"That must be some tough training then," Shane says.
"Whatever! This doesn't matter we need to help Johnny or he's gonna pass out from all the blood he's losing," I say.
"O-oh right!" Shane says.
With that we start heading towards the camp in a hurry.
Back at the camp I see lots of big sticks piled up. (They got a lot of good sticks... I'm impressed.) I wall over towards a log and set Johnny down on it.
Then Lucas and the Trio come out of the forest and set more wood in the pile. They notice us and come to us then their eyes grow wide seeing Johnny. Tony looks away like he can't bare to see the blood. I wouldn't blame him.
"W-what happened?!" Lucas asks.
"Long story short he wanted to be Tarzan and hurt himself," I say.
I stand up, grab a bandana, and tie it around Johnny's leg to try to stop the blood flowing out.
"I'm going to the forest to find some medical plants," I say.
"I'll help," Lucas says.
"Jason, grab a coconut and get some water from the stream then come back here. Zack stay with Johnny. Everyone else go get more vines and don't swing from them!" I say shooting Johnny a glare.
I walk off, Lucas grabs the bag and a coconut, and follows behind me.
"What are we looking for?" Lucas asks.
"Well luckily, I had to do a survival guide project in school and half of it was about medical plants with their uses and how to mix them," I say.
(Actually, that's a lie too. I had to study all about that stuff in my princess training.)
"What we are looking for is called White Sage it's very soft, green, and fuzzy," I say.
"Like this?" Lucas says.
I walk over to where he's pointing.
"Yes, that's it!" I say.
He grabs a handfull and puts it in the bag.
"Now, let's find a pine tree and a cottonwood tree," I say.
We walk further and amazingly enough find a cottonwood tree. This island has everything! (From what I remember I believe you need the bark of it.) I look around for a rock to stab off the bark. (Of course if Lucas wasn't here I'd just rip off the bark with my bare hands.)
I find a sharp rock and go to hit the tree. The bark comes out just enough to move my fingers behind and let me rip it off. This should be enough. Just before I turn around I see movement up in the tree. On instinct I expect something to attack and take a defensive stance.
(Oh, it was just a squirrel...) I relax then notice something else on the tree. (There's buds on the tree. Those would be even better than the bark.)
I walk over to Lucas and give him the bark then turn around to go back to the tree. I start to climb.
"W-what are you doing?!" Lucas asks worriedly.
"I'm getting the buds at the top of the tree," I say calmly.
"No! I'll do it!" Lucas says.
(Awww... he's worried that's cute.)
"Don't worry, I'll can do it. I always climb trees. I'm known as a little monkey," I say.
"....Fine," Lucas says, "Just don't fall or I..."
"Or you'll what..?" I ask.
"O-or I-I mean we would be in trouble," Lucas says.
"Don't worry, I'll be fine!" I say acting like I didn't notice him stumbling.
(I wonder what he really wanted to say. Should I read his thoughts? No, I can't.) Thinking that I start to climb the tree. I felt his gaze on me the whole way up.
I easily climb up and sit on a branch cupping my shirt putting the buds inside. When I finish I pull my shirt close to my chest, so the buds won't fall out, and jump.
"!!! Ack!" Lucas yells freaking out.
I land on my feet not making a sound. Then I see a shocked, freaked out, scared, mad, and worried face coming towards me.
"WHAT THE HELL!! YOU SCARED ME TO DEATH!!" Lucas yells.
Lucas wraps his arms around me. (He's hugging me!)
"Don't scare me like that. Tell me you can do things like that, so I won't worry," Lucas says.
"S-sorry..." I say. (Wait, why am I apologizing? Why is he hugging me?) "Did I scare you so much that you need to hug me?" I ask.
Like he just realized that he was hugging me he quickly let's go.
"S-sorry..." Lucas says face red, "Something like that..."
He mumbled the last bit trying to not have me hear, but I still heard it.
(What does he mean? How did he get over here so quickly? He was on the other side... Strange.)
I put the buds in the bag and the last thing we need is the resin from a pine tree. We don't say anything to each other while we get the resin into the coconut. We don't speak all the way back to the camp either. Not making any kind of eye contact and we keep our distance from each other too. (This is awkward.)
When we get back to camp we head over to Johnny. Lucas sets the bag by Johnny and walks off into the forest not saying a word. Everyone watches him walk off and then turns to me.
"What's wrong with him?" they ask.
"He's fine. I think he just needs to clear his head and be alone right now," I say.
They give me a puzzled look, but don't say anything else. I set the coconut with resin by the bag and go grab a short fat stick. I shred a white sage leaf and put it into the resin along with some buds. I grab the bowl with water and pour a little in with the rest. I grab the other bandana and dip it into the water. I then wipe off the blood on Johnny's leg. He screws his face up in pain.
"Sorry, I know it hurts," I say, "Everyone go get a drink at the stream and while you're there collect fruit and bring back three coconuts full of water for me, Johnny, and Lucas to drink."
They leave and I start crushing up the mixture into a paste after I cleaned off Johnny's leg.
"What really happened with Lucas? I noticed he wouldn't look at you," Johnny says.
(He's so observant! Suspicious...)
Johnny takes my silence wrong and starts again.
"Ooh, something happened! Didn't it?" Johnny says.
"What? N-no..." I say. (He can't possibly know what happened.)
"Oh yeah, something happened," he says like he's reading my mind.
"I um... I just scared him..." I say.
"Oh, well you must have got him pretty good for him to walk off like that," Johnny says.
"Yah..." I say. (Good, I convinced him. I mean half of its true. I mean I did scare him but...)
I lather the paste onto Johnny's wound and his face completely relaxes. (Okay, need to use the healing power a little bit. Here goes... Hope he doesn't notice.)
"That feels good..." Johnny says.
"Haha, good it should. This should heal it quickly and prevent it from scarring," I say. (Good, he didn't notice.)
I walk over to the stump and grab the gauze wrap and encase it around Johnny's wound.
"Haha, you would be a good mother," Johnny says.
"What do you mean?" I ask confused by the strange statement.
"Sorry, I meant that you take good care of people," Johnny says.
"Um, yeah, thanks, I guess, haha," I say awkwardly.
Everyone comes back from the grove with armfuls of fruit and three cocobowls of water.
We all gather around the fire and eat our fruit. It was starting to get dark and Lucas still wasn't back.
(I'm starting to get worried what if something happened?) Then I hear shouting from far away. (That's Lucas! Wait, it just sounds like he's angry, not in trouble. Hmmm. I look around at everyone they don't seem like they heard it. Of course they don't have super hearing. Everyone is starting to dose off.)
"I'm going to look for Lucas," I state and walk off in the direction he left following his scent.
I follow his scent to the top of a little mountain. Lucky I can see in the dark because it's pitch black now. I keep walking up and the mountain reaches out above the trees. (This would be a good place for the signal fire.) Then I see a figure on top. The figure looks like it has wings above it flying back and forth. (Lucas?! My mind must be playing tricks on me...)
"Why is this so difficult!?" he yells.
(That's definitely Lucas' voice. Is he flying?! I can't tell there are bushes in the way.) I start to walk up to him then...
"Why can't I just say how I feel!?" Lucas yells.
I stop in my tracks. (How he feels?) Then he turns around quickly like he just realized I was there. The things that I imagined to be wings disappear.
"Aah, Kat?! H-how long have you been there?!" Lucas yells.
"A-a while..." I say. (He looks nervous and doesn't look like he's flying. Maybe I was imagining it?)
"H-how much have you heard?!" he says.
"I heard 'Why is this so difficult' and to now," I say, "Don't worry I won't tell anyone."
"Umm, okay?" Lucas says confused.
"I was worried about you so I came looking for you. I thought something bad might have happened," I say.
"I guess you know how I felt when you jumped from that tree," he says. (Trust me, I can take care of myself plenty.)
"Haha, I just so," I say.
I walk over toward the cliff and sit on the boulder at the edge. Lucas comes and sits next to me. Then he looks at me then asks.
"How did you do that anyway?" he asks.
"Do what?" I ask.
"Jumping from that tree top and not killing yourself? Also, I didn't hear a thump when you landed. How did you not make a noise?" he asks.
(I can't tell him the truth. I'll say something half true.)
"When I was little I did ballet and karate, so I'm light on my feet. And I land on my toes first," I say.
"It's like you have some kind of superpowers," Lucas says.
My heart almost stops at his words. (He couldn't possibly know... Could he?)
"I wish," I say.
We laugh and look out across the horizon.
"This is a beautiful view," I say.
"You're better..." Lucas says.
"Wait, what!?" I look at him shocked.
"I-I mean yeah, it is beautiful," Lucas says flustered.
My heart is racing.
"I wish we were back on the ship," he suddenly says.
"I think we all do," I respond.
"Remember how we told everyone we were twins?"
"I can't believe that they honestly believed us!" I say, laughing.
"I remember the great food and the hot tubs. I wish I was in one now."
"Oh yeah," I agree. "I loved looking out at the sea from the front of the ship."
"I liked that part too."
"Especially when I was with you," we both say at the same time. We look at each other in surprise.
"We should head and back to the camp," I manage to say after a long silence.
I stand up and Lucas grabs my arm turning me around.
"W-what's wrong?" I ask.
"Um, n-nothing, never mind..." Lucas says sadly and let's my arm go.
Before I realize what I'm doing I hug him.
"Whaa?!" Lucas says, jolting in surprise.
"This is what you wanted right?" I say nervously. (Oops, read his mind...)
I look up at his face and he turns it away. His face is flushed. I giggle.
"You're never honest with your feelings," I say.
I begin to loosen my grip, but he wraps his arms around tight as if not wanting to let me go.
"Can we stay like this for a while," Lucas says.
"Um... uh sure?" I say awkwardly.
(I don't want this to end. Wait, why? What's this warm feeling in my chest? Wait... this scent... is he a... no, he can't be... but this scent is just like one... but it's half the scent of a normal one. Is he the halfie? No. It can't be him. I would have sensed it sooner... right?)
We return to the camp to find everyone sleeping. I put more wood into the fire.
"Lucas, did you eat anything?" I ask.
He shakes his head. I grab a cocobowl and fill it with cut up fruit giving it to him.
"Thanks," Lucas says.
"So what were you yelling about on the mountain anyway?" I ask.
Lucas chokes on his food a little then regains his composure.
"U-um nothing... Anyway, is Johnny gonna be okay?" Lucas asks.
(He just completely avoided the question. I guess he doesn't want to talk about it?)
"Y-yes, he is going to be fine," I say and we look at him.
"That's good," Lucas says.
Lucas finishes eating and I put the remaining wood on the fire to last through the night.
"I guess it's time to sleep," Lucas says.
"Yeah, tomorrow is going to be another big day," I say.
We lay down by the others. Lucas closes his eyes.
"Goodnight, Kat," Lucas says.
"Oh, before you go to sleep I need to tell you something," I say.
Lucas opens his eyes and looks at me. "Yes?" Lucas says.
"I want you to be the co-leader," I say.
He looks at me dumbfounded.
"...Cool," he says.
"Okay, now we can go to sleep. Goodnight, Lucas," I say closing my eyes turning my back to him.
(I'm totally exhausted.) I think that as I feel something warm wrap around me from behind.
"Goodnight," he whispers.
...
