~야, 바보야. 그게 아냐. 태형씨와 데이트하고 있잖어
"Mom says get up!" Those were the first words Chul heard that day. An empty milk tea bottle rapped him over the top of his head as his blanket was snatched away. His oldest sister met his eyes as soon as he opened them.
He groaned terribly and swatted the bottle away. "Says you're going to be late for school, and you're not getting a ride from her. And you won't get one from me either."
"Don't care," he muttered.
"Fine, be my guest. Let mom see you trying to play hooky."
"Yeah, whatever. I'm getting up." He threw his body up into a sitting position on the bed and harshly rolled his eyes. "I'm up. Now leave."
His sister chuckled and patted his head. "Look at your cute bedhead, aw!"
"It is not cute!" Chul grunted out, furiously running his hands through his hair.
"Yeah, yeah. Now get up." She left the room, leaving Chul to let his head snap back in exasperation as he once again groaned. Chul was a bit of a grump most of the time, but even more so in the morning.
He checked his phone. He had ten minutes to get ready if he wanted to get to school without sprinting 5 miles (which he had done before, and it turned out to be a very unpleasant experience).
Most of Chul's things were black. Black hair that he combed to the side; black shirt that he pulled over his head; black jeans he tugged up to his hips; black belt he threaded through their loops. The only thing he wore that wasn't black was a thin, silver chain that hugged his neck. He did miss wearing his school's grey and white varsity jacket, but it was May and quite warm and generally didn't drop below 60 degrees.
He scooped up his backpack and dragged it along behind him on his fingertips as he padded into the bathroom, shoving a toothbrush into his mouth and staring at himself with furrowed eyebrows in the mirror.
Coming to absolutely no conclusions about his appearance, having nothing positive or negative to say about it, he spit out his toothpaste and rinsed his mouth, lastly checking his teeth to ensure they looked white enough.
Satisfied, he replaced his toothbrush in the cup that held a variety of other brushes belonging to his siblings. He trudged downstairs, slipping his backpack on as he did so. Pancakes were getting cold on a plate in the kitchen, so he shoved one whole into his mouth and chewed with difficulty while sliding his feet into socks and shoes.
"Bye, mom," He called out, blankly, opening the door.
"Bye, sweetheart! Have a good day at school!" He left without another word.
"What does she think I am? A little kid?" He grumbled as he walked across the yard, kicking a stick. He looked to his left, and there were Jimin and Taehyung, together in the latter's yard, chattering with each other. He huffed crossly.
And there came the bus, right on time; like an annoying, freakishly large bumblebee that repeatedly and continuously comes back, buzzes loudly in your ears, and causes you several sorts of grief, yet, its existence is necessary for fruitful life in this society. That was Chul's amazing metaphor for a school bus. He was, frankly, a bit proud of it.
He boarded the bus behind his brother and his best friend, and continued on straight past them to take a seat at the back, shoving his backpack onto the seat next to him and sighing heavily as he looked out the window.
One thing caught his attention- one girl, that is. Sorah stepped onto the bus, dressed again in another of her usual, low-effort outfits of sweats and a graphic t-shirt. It was her confidence in those outfits that made it so attractive. She stepped onto the bus and nonchalantly took her seat beside Taehyung. Chul frowned.
He didn't like the ride to school. He didn't like arriving at school. He most certainly did not like his classes. But, he did like lunch. It was finally Thursday, which meant that the school was getting pizza for lunch. His stomach seemed to be whining and begging for it all day until third period was finally over with and he was able to make a mad dash for the cafeteria.
Carrying a lunch tray with several stacked slices of pizza, he walked beside another two boys his age, Seojun and Jihoon. They strolled outside to the playground and climbed onto the roof of the playset to eat their lunch. It was a bit ironic, the sight of three teenage boys, trying their bests to appear as cool and grown-up as they could, while sitting atop a childish play-place intended for people half their age at most.
*abrupt and brief pov switch heheh*
"Come on, let's play!" Jimin prodded, opening the door to the playground with his elbow, since his hands were full of tray.
"You can't play go fish with two people. That'd be incredibly boring," Taehyung answered, stepping outside.
"Then, let's drag Sorah into it and make her be third player."
"Well, then you get her and bring her back here."
"Sure." Jimin set his tray down on one of the picnic tables a little ways away from the playground, where a few bored highschoolers spun each other around on a merry-go-round until one of them puked, spewing projectile nastiness all over, then hitting the ground with a loud thump, and, hidden from Jimin's view, his younger brother and his companions sat and ate their lunch. He turned to go back inside while Taehyung sat down and took a bite of his slice of pizza.
It took several minutes, but Jimin eventually returned with Sorah in tow, fumbling with a pack of cards. Sorah didn't quite seem thrilled, but then again, that was normal.
*back to chul*
Chul peeked over the crest of the roof as he ate, checking out the source of the laughing coming from somewhere below. And there they were, that group of three that kept causing Chul's face to squish up into a frown. Sorah especially. He was bitterly disappointed that she'd chosen Taehyung over him, not that he'd even stuck himself in her line of sight much.
He sighed angrily, shoving away his lunch tray as he stared. "There's hyung's friend with Sorah again. I can't believe he got her." He wondered why she chose him, besides his face. Even he had to admit Taehyung was extremely good-looking and had a charming aura, despite his slight awkwardness and shyness. "I didn't really want her. I wanted her reputation, honestly..." He paused for a moment, expecting some hum of agreement as a reaction from his two companions, but they were silent.
He looked back over his shoulder, and the two boys had finished their lunches and were on their phones. "Hey, Seojun, you even listening, man? Jihoon?" No answers. He sighed again, this time from still more disappointment. "Scratch that, what I want is some real friends." He leaned onto his fist and watched some more, now feeling slightly more wistful toward the group.
Deciding he no longer had a taste for watching them play their game of go fish, for eating pizza, or for staying in the company of the two boys who were clearly much more interested in their phones than him, he shoved his tray with a whole uneaten slice of cheese pizza into the hands of Seojun, who took it without even looking at Chul, or saying a word.
As he started to climb down, finally Seojun's head popped up and he looked at him. "Wait, Sorah's dating?"
In disbelief, Chul let out a throaty 'ugh' and smacked his forehead on the plastic beam of the playset. Seojun looked over the roof at the group, mirroring Chul's actions from a minute ago, and made a brief sound of wonder. "She's with Jimin. That's weird," he commented, directed at Jihoon, but the boy didn't notice, so he kicked his shin to get his attention. "Look, Hoon, Sorah's dating Chul's hyung!"
"No, idiot! She's dating Taehyung!"
"Huh."
