Fireflies
"You lost them?" Derek asked, shooting me a 'I'm going to rip his throat out' look.
"Yeah, I kind of had to" I heard Scott reply.
"Wasn't exactly the plan" Derek said.
"I know, which is why I think that we should stick together. Trust me, he's too strong, too fast, and way too angry for one person to handle. We've got to do this together" Scott said.
"Look, I'm at the trails by the entrance to the preserve. Can you meet me here?" Derek asked.
"Yeah. Just got to drop something off first"
Derek pulled the phone away from his ear and sighed.
I groaned. "We're so screwed"
"We'll find them"
"Are you serious? We've been walking around this woods for ages" I reminded.
"Scott will be here soon. All three of us will find them"
"Derek. Let's be realistic"
The two of us stood in silence for a moment until my brother spoke up.
"We need to talk about Cora"
"Now isn't exactly the best time"
"You knew she was alive?"
I sighed. "After the fire, we went to live in South America. And when I wanted to come back to Beacon Hills, she and I had an argument about it and fell out. Before I left she made me promise not to tell you we was alive. I'm sorry Derek"
"Why didn't she want me to know she was alive?"
"I don't know Derek, I'm sorry. I guess you'll have to ask her when she doesn't want to rip everyone's throat out"
Derek gave me a look.
"Hey" Scott said.
"Okay, have you got a plan?" I asked.
"Was I supposed to come up with a plan?"
"Well no. But you could have come up with some kind of idea. I mean, it would have been helpful but it's cool. Your plans suck anyway"
Scott opened his mouth to protest but a loud howl cut him off.
"Is it them?" Scott asked.
"No it's all those other animals that can howl like us" I rolled my eyes.
"We're not the only ones that decided to stick together" Derek said.
"Is that gonna make it easier or harder to catch them?"
"I don't know" my brother replied.
"Derek, I saw Boyd try to rip two little kids apart. Are they gonna do that to everyone they find?" Scott questioned.
"Everyone and anyone"
I frowned, catching a scent of something.
Someone.
"What?" Scott eyed me weirdly.
I looked up. "Isaac's here"
"Shay, wait-"
I pushed past the boys and ran through the woods, following the scent.
"Emily, where are you? Emily! Em? Emily, where are you? Emily!" I heard a girl yell.
I followed the girls voice until I crashed through the trees and stumbled into the open.
I heard growling and saw Isaac pushing Cora down to the floor.
"Isaac!" I yelled.
The two of them turned around.
Cora roared and picked Isaac up throwing him against a tree.
I growled and ran over, flying straight into her and knocking both of us into the ground.
I heard footsteps thudding and presumed it was Scott and Derek.
The four of us ganged up in front of her and she snarled and took off in the other direction.
Derek roared and sprinted after her, Isaac and I following behind.
~
"Are you sure?" Scott asked, holding his phone out so Derek, Isaac and I could hear his conversation with Stiles too.
"Yep. Throat ripped out, blood everywhere. It's like the frickin' shining over here. If two little twin girls come out of the woods, start asking me to play with them forever and ever, I'm not gonna be surprised" Stiles replied.
I rolled my eyes. "Stop being so melodramatic"
"Melodra-melodramatic? Me? Are you serious?"
"Can you get a little closer to make sure it was them?" Scott asked.
"Make sure it was them? Scott, who else is going around ripping throats out?"
"Please just do it"
I heard Stiles sigh.
"This doesn't make any sense. The public pool is all the way on the other side of the woods. We haven't tracked them anywhere near there" Derek said.
"Derek, they killed someone" Scott pointed out.
"How are they moving so fast?" My brother asked.
"Derek-"
"But they can't be that fast on foot" my brother argued.
"They killed someone. Some totally innocent kid is dead And it's our fault"
"It's my fault" Derek mumbled.
"We need help" Scott said.
"We have Isaac now" I said.
Scott sighed. "I mean real help"
Isaac glanced at me and then shot Scott a 'fight me' look.
"They're too fast for us, for all of us. They're too strong, too rabid" I said.
"We'll catch 'em" Derek said.
"What happens if we do? We just gonna hold them down until the sun comes up?" Isaac asked.
Derek looked down at the ground. "Maybe it would be easier just to kill them"
"Killing them isn't the right thing to do" Scott said.
"What if it's the only thing to do? If we can't even catch them, what else do we do?" I said.
"Find someone who knows what they're doing" Scott suggested.
"Who?" Derek asked.
"Someone who knows how to hunt werewolves"
~
"First of all, why would I care about anyone related to Derek?" Chris said.
I coughed. "I am here, you know"
Chris ignored me. "And second, I don't know this kid Boyd. I don't even know his last name"
"Boyd is his last name" Scott said.
"What's his first name?"
"Vernon" I replied. "And just curious, is there a reason the gun is still pointed at me?" I asked.
"Well, there's probably still some part of me that wants to shoot you"
"Well isn't that fantastic. Really comforting to know" I muttered.
"I get that" Scott said.
I gave him a 'wtf' look.
Chris put the gun back in his pocket and sighed. "Scott, I watched my father brainwash my daughter and almost turn her into a killer. That world, your world, decimated mine. My wife, sister, father, my entire family. Why would I ever step foot in it again?" Chris said.
"Because people are going to die.
And because you know how to catch Boyd and Cora without killing them"
"I'm sorry. I can't help you"
"Um. Do you think you could do me, like, one little, tiny favor?" Scott asked. "Could you give us a ride somewhere"
Chris sighed. "Okay, get in"
Scott and I exchanged subtle smiles before climbing into the back of Chris' car.
The whole journey was pretty much in silence until we started to get closer to our destination.
"Left or straight?" Chris asked.
"Left. Sorry. It's right around the corner. That parking lot there. Yeah, just a little further up, right here" Scott directed.
As we passed all the ambulances, Chris stared.
"Thanks again for the ride"
"Yeah, thanks" I smiled.
"They did this?" Chris frowned. "Boyd and-"
"Cora" Scott finished.
I nodded.
"Where's the last place you saw them?
~
"You're tracking them by print?" Chris asked, throwing a bag down onto the ground.
"Trying to" Scott said.
"Emphasis on the word 'trying'" I added.
"Well, then, you've been wasting your time. There's only one creature on earth that can visually track footprints, and that's man. And if you're not trained like me, you have no idea that this print is Boyd's and these-"
"Are Cora's" Isaac said proudly as he pointed them out.
"Nope"
His face fell.
"They're yours. You trampled Cora's as soon as you walked over here"
Isaac's mouth formed an 'oh' shape and he looked down at the floor.
"Listen, I know the four of you are focusing half your energy on resisting your own urges under the full moon, but that puts you at a severe disadvantage to Boyd and Cora, who have fully given in. They put the pedal to the floor where you four are barely hitting the speed limit" Chris said.
"So what do we do?"
"Focus on your sense of smell. Actual wolves are known to track their prey by up to a hundred miles a day by scent. A trained hunter can use scent to track them. If the wind is with them, wolves can track a scent by a distance of two miles, which means we can draw them to us or into a trap. The full moon does give us one advantage. They'll have a higher heat signature, which makes them easier to spot with infrared" Chris handed out some goggles.
"Thanks, but I've got my own" Derek said, making his eyes glow red.
"Just remember, we're not hunting wild animals. Underneath those impulses are two intelligent human beings. Don't think they can't rely on that human side. It's suppressed, but it's there, reminding them how to mask their scent, how to cover their tracks, how to survive" Chris said. He turned to face Derek and I. "When's the last time you saw your sister?"
"Nine years. I thought she died in the fire" Derek answered.
Chris looked at me. "Um, about a year ago. I was in South America with her"
"Do either of you feel like you have a lock on her scent?"
Derek and I both shook our heads.
"Scott, how confident are you in your skills?" Chris questioned.
"Honestly, most of the time, I'm trying not to think about all the things I can smell" He answered.
"All right. The problem is when they breach the woods and hit the residential area. Once they're past the high school, they're right in the middle of beacon hills"
"They're not gonna kill everything they see, are they?" Isaac asked.
"No. But there is an important difference to recognize. Wolves hunt for food. At a certain point, they get full. But Boyd and Cora are hunting for the pleasure of the kill, for some primal apex predatory satisfaction that comes from the ripping of warm bodies to bloody shreds. And who knows when that need gets satiated" Chris said.
"We can't kill them" Scott said.
"What if we can't catch them?" Derek pointed out.
"Then maybe we just need to contain them. There's no one in the school at night, is there?" Chris asked.
"You want to trap them inside?" I frowned.
"If there's somewhere with a strong enough door, no windows or access to the outside" Chris replied.
"What about the boiler room? It's just one big steel door" Isaac suggested.
"You're sure the school's empty?"
"It has to be. There can't be anyone there this late, right?" Scott said.
Chris opened his bag and pulled some equipment out.
"These are ultrasonic emitters. It's one of the tools we use to corral werewolves, pushing them into a direction we want them to run. Gives off a high-pitched frequency that only they can hear" Chris switched it on and I felt the pain pierce through me.
"God, no kidding!" I yelled, covering my ears.
"These are gonna drive them to the school? And then it's up to you to get them into the basement" he handed us some tools.
"Does anyone else want to rethink the plan where we just, uh, kill them?" Isaac asked.
"It's going to work" Scott said determinedly. "It'll work"
~
"And the hunted becomes the hunter.
You really think a few high-tech dog whistles are gonna help?" I heard my uncle Peter say.
I placed the last emitter in the ground and headed over to where my uncle and Derek were stood.
"I don't see you offering a hand" I said.
"Personally, I'm trying to cut down on futile endeavours"
"Cora's alive" Derek said.
"I heard. Let's throw the reunion party when she's not an unstoppable killing machine" Peter rolled his eyes.
"I can stop her" My brother said.
"Sure you can. By killing her which happens to be the point of this little exercise. Deucalion wants you to kill them. He wants you to get rid of his baggage, making it easier for you to join his pack. The fact that it was supposed to happen in the vault, and not up here, out in the open, doesn't change his plan. It just means that Boyd and Cora are gonna kill a few innocent people first"
"And I should just let them? I should be okay with innocent people dying?"
"Unless you're okay killing your own"
"I can catch them" Derek said.
"Oh, come on. How much damage can they do? So they off a few homeless people, a drunk stumbling out of a bar too late. So what? Let Scott deal with it. Let him be the hero of his morally black and white world. The real survivors, you and I, we live in shades of gray"
"Fifty?" I interrupted with a laugh.
Peter gave me an exasperated look.
"Sorry. I'll just leave" I rolled my eyes.
"Derek, even if you did kill them, you're still an Alpha" Peter reached down and pressed one of the transmitters on. "You can always make more werewolves"
~
"Hey" I said, jogging over to Isaac. "You okay?"
"I'm okay. Are you okay?"
"I'm okay" I smiled.
I went to speak again but loud growls cut me off.
I closed my eyes and groaned internally.
"Oh, great" Isaac muttered.
We both spun around, coming face to face with Cora and Boyd.
I flicked my wrists, showing my claws.
A loud beeping sound made all of us turn our heads in the direction of the sound.
Cora and Boyd both started to run away as Chris Argent's car came into our view.
Isaac and I started to follow them and they paused when they saw Derek blocking the entrance to the school.
And then they jumped onto the roof.
"They're not going through the school" Scott said. "They're going over it"
"The red doors, someone has to get them open. Someone has to drive them inside" I said.
"I'll go" Chris offered.
"No. I'm faster" Isaac said, running off without hesitation.
"Let's get inside"
The four of us headed in and soon enough we heard the growls from the two werewolves.
Derek stepped out in front of them, me beside him. They turned around and Chris stepped behind them with a taser. And then Scott to the other side.
We had them cornered.
"Come and get us" My brother smiled smugly.
Derek, Scott and I then took off running down to the boiler room. Boyd and Cora followed us down and we grabbed fire extinguishers. As it was difficult for them to see us, we quickly rushed out of the room, slamming the door shut behind us.
"Did that actually just work?" I asked, breathing a sigh of relief.
"It worked" Derek said, still leaning against the door. "What are you hearing?" He sunk down against the wall.
"Heartbeats" Scott said.
"Both of 'em?" I asked.
"Actually, three of them"
Derek sat up.
"Three?" I questioned.
"Three heartbeats" Scott said.
"Do you- do you think someone else is in there?" I asked.
"What are you doing?" Scott said, noticing Derek stood up by the door again.
"Close the door behind me and keep it shut" My brother said.
"You go in there alone, and you're either gonna kill them, or they kill you" Scott pointed out.
"That's why I'm going in alone"
"Derek! Derek no!" I grabbed his hand.
"Shay-"
"Derek, please" I begged. "Please" Hot tears threatened to spill down my cheeks.
"Hey, hey, it's okay" he brushed a strand of hair from my face.
"Derek I can't- I can't lose you. I can't lose anymore family. Please" I begged.
"I love you. Okay?" He kissed my forehead.
I shook my head, unable to get my words out.
Derek opened the door and stepped inside.
"Derek, please!" I yelled after him.
Scott started to hastily shut the door behind my brother.
"Derek!" I cried, trying to push past Scott.
"Hey, hey, hey" Scott grabbed my waist and pulled me back by my waist.
I struggled against him, trying to reach for the door.
"Shay!" Scott shouted. "Shay, calm down"
"No, no, no" The tears started to blur my vision.
"Shay, it's okay. It's going to be okay"
He pulled me closer towards him and even though I tried to push him away at first, I eventually gave up.
I could hear growling and horrific sounds that made me have terrible images of my brother being ripped to shreds by my sister and Boyd.
"Shh. It's okay" Scott wrapped his arms around me. "It's okay" he whispered.
"I can't. I can't, I can't, I can't" I repeated, burying my head in Scott's chest.
"Calm down. It's okay" he whispered.
"I can't lose him" I choked out.
"I know"
Scott pulled away from the hug and gave me a small smile.
"Scott?" I asked.
"It's going to be okay" He reached for the door.
"Scott, don't you dare! Don't you dare, Scott" I grabbed his arm, pulling him back. "Scott!" I shouted in desperation.
"Scott? The sun's coming up" I heard another voice say.
I looked up to see Isaac running down the stairs.
I turned back around just as Scott closed the door behind him.
"SCOTT!" I screamed, pulling open the door and rushing inside, Isaac behind me.
My brother was knelt on the floor with cuts and scratches all over him. His head was hung low.
Cora and Boyd were lay on the floor in front of him.
"Oh my god, Derek" I put my hand over my mouth. He suddenly lifted his head up and we all sighed a breath of relief.
"There's a teacher. I'll take care of her. Get them out of here" He ordered.
Before I went to help pick up my sister, I knelt down next to Derek.
"I thought I'd lost you"
"I'll never leave you, Shay" Despite the situation, he smiled.
I smiled in return, wiping the tears away from my cheeks. "Never do that again"
Derek laughed and squeezed my hand. "I'll meet you back up there, okay?"
"Okay"
~
"So Boyd and Cora might not have killed anyone?" Scott asked as Stiles pulled the sheet back over a girl's body.
"You're gonna wish they did" Stiles answered.
"Why?" I said, a little puzzled.
"I'm not exactly sure yet. The other girl, who was out in the woods, Emily. Eventually they're gonna find her. She's one of them. Emily, Heather, that guy Lydia found at the pool. All three were virgins. And they're all gonna have the same three injuries strangled, throat slashed, head bashed in. It's called the threefold death" He explained.
"So if these aren't random killings, then what are they?" I asked, frowning in confusion.
"Sacrifices" Scott and I turned to face Stiles. "Human sacrifices"
~
