Chaos Rising
"You know, I'm starting not to like this idea" I said, chewing on my nails nervously.
Isaac bit his lip, nodding in agreement. "Sounds kinda dangerous"
"You know what? I definitely don't like this idea, and I definitely don't like him" I said, referring to my uncle Peter.
"You'll be fine" Derek said.
"Does it have to be him?" Isaac questioned.
"He knows how to do it. I don't. Be more dangerous if I tried doing it myself" My brother replied.
"You know Scott doesn't trust him, right? You know, personally, I'd well, I'd trust Scott" Isaac said.
"Do you trust me?" Derek asked.
"Yeah. But I still don't like him"
"Nobody likes him" Derek said.
The door opened and we looked up to see my uncle.
"FYI, yes, coming back from the dead has left my abilities somewhat impaired, but the hearing still works.
So I hope you're comfortable saying whatever it is that you're feeling straight to my face" My uncle Peter said as he walked into the room.
I shrugged. "We don't like you"
"Now shut up and help us" Derek added.
"Fair enough" Peter stood behind a nervous Isaac. "Relax. I'll get more out of you if you're calm"
"How do you know how to do this, again?" Isaac asked anxiously.
"It's an ancient ritual used mostly by alphas, since it's a skill that requires quite a bit of practice. One slip, and you could paralyze someone. Or kill them"
"You-You've had a lot of practice, though, right?" Isaac asked.
"Well, I've never paralyzed anyone"
"Wait, does that mean that you-"
Before Isaac could finish his sentence, Peter pushed his claws into the back of his neck, making Isaac writhe in pain.
I went to step forward.
"Wait, I see them!" Peter exclaimed.
Isaac continued to squirm and yell out in pain.
"Peter stop!" I shouted.
My uncle eventually removed his claws and stumbled backwards from the chair.
"What'd you see?" Derek asked.
"It was confusing" He panted. "Um, images. Vague shapes"
"But you saw something" I said.
"Isaac found them"
"Erica and Boyd?" My brother asked in disbelief.
"I barely saw them. I mean, glimpses" Peter answered.
"But you did see them?" I said.
"Worse"
"Deucalion" Derek said, his jaw clenching.
"He was talking to them. Something about time running out"
"What does it mean?" I asked.
"He's gonna kill them" Derek said.
"No, no, no, he didn't say that. He did make them a promise that by the full moon they'd both be dead" Peter explained.
"The next full moon?" Derek frowned.
"Tomorrow night" I confirmed.
~
"I don't see anything" Derek said to the two girls.
"Look again" Scott said.
"How is a bruise gonna tell me where Boyd and Erica are?"
"It's the same on both sides. Exactly the same" I said.
"It's nothing"
"Pareidolia. Seeing patterns that aren't there" Lydia said. Derek, Scott and I exchanged glances. "It's a subset of apophenia" she said like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
I sighed. "They're trying to help"
"These two" Derek frowned. "This one, who used me to resurrect my psychotic Uncle. Thank you" Derek looked at Lydia. "And this one, who shot about thirty arrows into me and my pack" he glared at Allison.
"Okay, all right, now, come on. No one died, all right? Look, there may have been a little maiming, okay, a little mangling, but no death. That's what I call an important distinction" Stiles tried to reason with my brother, earning him a death stare.
"My mother died" Allison spoke up.
"Your family's little honor code killed your mother. Not me" Derek said.
"That girl was looking for Scott. I'm here to help him, not you" Allison shook her head.
"You wanna help? Find something real"
"Derek, give her a chance" I said.
"Okay, they're on our side now" Scott added.
Derek turned to face Scott. "Well then maybe you should tell her what her mother was actually trying to do that night"
All of us turned to look at each other. Nobody spoke until the bell ring for class.
"Um, we better go" I said.
Derek gave me a nod and then left.
"Okay, what would a pack of alphas want with Erica and Boyd?" Stiles asked.
I shook my head. "I'm not sure it's them they want"
"Okay, what, like Derek? Like they're recruiting?"
I caught the scent of the twins again and by the looks of it, Scott did too.
"I'm not sure but they're up to something" I said to just Stiles as Scott was too fixated on the twins. Stiles looked at Scott weirdly before turning back to me. I uh, need to go to the library. I'll see you later"
~
"I want one" Lydia, smirked looking towards the two twins.
"Which one?" Allison whispered.
"The straight one, obviously" she said sipping her cup of coffee.
I said nothing, just looked down at my book again.
When I looked up again, Lydia had gone. I scanned the room until I noticed her with one of the twins.
I wanted to say something. The instinct to protect my friend was too strong.
"What if it's not a symbol?" Allison blurted.
I turned my head to face her. "Sorry?"
"What if it's actually a logo?" She showed me Lydia's coffee cup.
"I think you could be right. I'm gonna call Derek" I shoved my books back into my bag and then swung it over my shoulder. "Tell me if you find it"
"Okay" she said, transfixed on her computer screen.
As I left the library, my phone started to ring.
"Hello?"
"Shay, you need to meet us at Deaton's. We think we have an idea to find out where the alpha's are keeping them" my brother said.
"Okay. But Derek, Allison's had an idea. What if the pattern on her's and Lydia's wrist are a logo?" I said, walking down the empty school corridors.
Derek sighed. "Shay, this isn't going to help us"
"But what if she can find where the place is by looking up the logo" I argued.
"Then that's great. But we need to find this out quickly. So meet us at Deatons"
"I'm on my way" I hung up the phone and headed to my car.
The drive to Deaton's was only around five minutes.
I got out of the car and headed inside as quickly as I could.
"Obviously, it's not going to be particularly comfortable. But if we can slow your heart rate down enough, you'll slip into a trance-like state" I heard Deaton explain.
"Like being hypnotized?" I asked as I stepped into the room.
Deaton looked up at me and smiled. "Exactly" He then turned back towards Isaac. "You'll be half transformed. It'll let us access your subconscious mind"
Okay, wow. There's a giant ice bath in the middle of the room. That looks fun.
"How slow does his heart rate need to be?" Scott asked.
"Very slow" Deaton replied.
"Okay, well, how slow is very slow?" Derek said.
"Nearly dead"
All of us looked up at Deaton.
"It's safe, though, right?" Isaac asked nervously.
"Do you want me to answer honestly?" Deaton said.
"No. No, not really"
I heard a slapping noise and all of us simultaneously turned around to see Stiles with a glove on his had and a dorky smile plastered on his face.
"What?" He asked innocently.
I rolled my eyes and turned back around to face Isaac again.
"Look, if it feels too risky, you don't have to do this" I said. Scott and Derek nodded their heads in agreement.
He shook his head and pulled his shirt over his head.
I didn't mean to stare.
I just couldn't really tear my eyes away from him.
Scott nudged me and I snapped out of it.
Sighing, I took my leather jacket off and stood by the side of the ice bath.
Isaac started to step in, shivering at the cold. He took a deep, shaky breath and climbed into the tub. He started to shiver until we pushed him under and then sat up immediately, half transformed.
"Get him back under!" Deaton commanded.
Derek, Scott and I pushed Isaac back down.
He sat up again, yelling.
"Hold him!" Derek yelled to us.
"We're trying!" I shouted back.
Isaac soon stopped struggling and thrashing and we let go.
"Now, remember, only I talk to him. Too many voices will confuse him and draw him out" Deaton whispered. "Isaac. Can you hear me?"
"Yes. I can hear you" his voice sounded haunting.
"This is Dr. Deaton. I'd like to ask you a few questions. Is that all right?"
"Yes"
"I want to ask you about the night you found Erica and Boyd. I want you to remember it for me in as vivid detail as possible, like you're actually there again" Deaton said.
"I-I don't wanna do that. I don't I don't wanna do that. I don't wanna do that" he started to thrash about in the water and we held him down again.
The lights started to flicker, making all of us look up.
"Isaac, it's all right. Just relax. They're just memories. You can't be hurt by a memory" Deaton said calmly.
"I don't wanna do that" Isaac repeated. He started to move about some more and I leaned in closer to hold him down.
"It's all right"
"I don't wanna do that" Isaac grabbed my hand which was placed on the side of the tub.
"Relax. Relax. Good. Now let's go back to that night. To the place you found Erica and Boyd. Can you tell me what you see? Is there some kind of building? A house?" Deaton spoke slowly.
"It's not-it's not a house" Isaac corrected. "It's stone. I think marble"
"That's perfect. Can you give me any other descriptors?"
"It's dusty, so empty"
"Like an abandoned building?" Deaton asked. Isaac paused. "Isaac? Isaac?"
"Someone's here" he whispered. "Someone's here" he held my wrist tighter.
"Isaac, relax"
"No, no, no, they see me, they see me!" He started to struggle against us again.
"Just memories. You won't be hurt by your memories. Just relax. Relax" He stopped moving again and his grip on my wrist loosened. "Good. Now tell us what you see. Tell us everything" Deaton said
"I hear him. He's talking about the full moon, about being out of control when the moon rises"
"Is he talking to Erica?"
"I think so, I can't- I can't see her, I ca- I can't- I can't see either of them"
"Can you hear anything else?"
"They're worried. They're worried what they'll do during the moon. They're worried that they're gonna hurt each other" Isaac said.
"If they're locked in together on the full moon, they're gonna tear each other apart" Derek said.
"Isaac, we need to find them right now" Deaton said. "Can you see them?"
"No"
"Do you know what kind of room it is? Is there any kind of a marker? A number on a door? A sign?"
Isaac jolted upright, gasping for breath.
"They're here" He whispered, fear written all over his face. "They're here" he started to move again.
"It's all right" Deaton soothed.
"They're here" He shook his head.
"Just tell us-" Deaton started.
"They see me. They found me. They're here!" Derek, Stiles, Scott and I hurried to push him back down again.
"This isn't working" Derek said. "Isaac, where are you?" He yelled.
"I can't see them. It's too dark!"
"Just tell me where you are" Derek demanded.
"I can't see!" He exclaimed.
"You're going to confuse him" Deaton reminded.
"Isaac, where are you? Just tell me where you are" My brother rushed.
"His heart rate. He could go into shock" Deaton warned.
"Derek, let him go!" I yelled.
"Isaac, where are you? What did you see?" Derek shouted.
"There's a body" Isaac said, his voice shaking. "There's a dead body. It's Erica. It's Erica!" He jumped forwards and we all stepped back from the tub. "A vault! It's a bank vault! I saw it! I saw the name"
We pulled him out of the tub, wrapping a towel around him. "It's, uh B-beacon hills first national bank. It's, um it's an abandoned bank, and they're keeping them locked inside, inside the vault" Isaac rushed.
Then he noticed the expressions on our faces.
"What?"
"You don't remember what you said right before you came out of it, do you?" Stiles asked.
"No"
"You said when they captured you that they dragged you into a room and that there was a body in it" Stiles said.
"What body?" Isaac looked at me.
"Erica" I spoke up. "You said it was Erica"
~
Derek shook his head as he paced up and down the room. "She's not dead"
"Derek, he said, 'there's a dead body.
It's Erica.' Doesn't exactly leave us much room for interpretation" Stiles said sarcastically.
"Then who was in the vault with Boyd?" Derek argued.
"Someone else, obviously" I said.
"And maybe it was the girl on the motorcycle" Scott suggested. "Okay, the one who saved you" he looked at Isaac.
"No, she wasn't like us. And whoever was in the vault with Boyd was" Isaac said.
"What if that's how Erica died? They, like, pit them against each other during the full moons and see which one survives. It's like werewolf thunderdome" Stiles said.
"Then we get them out. Tonight" Derek said determinedly.
"Be smart about this, Derek. You can't just go storming in" Deaton said.
"If Isaac got in, then so can we"
"But he didn't get through a vault door, did he?"
We need a plan" Scott said.
"How are we gonna come up with a plan to break into a bank vault in less than 24 hours?" I asked.
"Uh, I think someone already did" Stiles spoke up, reading from his phone. "Beacon hills first national closes its doors three months after vault robbery" he looked up at us. "Doesn't say here how it was robbed, but it probably won't take long to find out"
"How long?" Derek questioned.
Stiles laughed. "It's the Internet, Derek. Okay? Minutes"
~
"Okay. You see this? This is how they got in. It's a rooftop air conditioning vent. Leads down inside into the wall of the vault, which is here. Okay? One of the robbers was lowered into this shaft. Now, that space is so small, it took him about 12 hours to drill into that wall, which is stone, by the way. Then throughout the rest of the night, they siphoned the cash up to the guys back on the roof through that one little shaft in the wall. Boom" Stiles explained, rather quickly might I add.
"Can we fit in there?" I queried.
"Yes, we can, but very, very barely. And they also patched the wall, obviously, so we're gonna need a drill of some kind. I'm thinking maybe a diamond bit-"
My brother cut him off. "Look, forget the drill"
"Sorry?"
"If I go in first, how much space do I have?" Derek asked.
"What do you-what do you think you're gonna do, Derek? You gonna punch through the wall?"
"Yes, Stiles, I'm gonna punch through the wall" My brother said, sounding extremely and utterly done with my friend.
"Okay, okay, big guy. Let's see it. Let's see that fist. Big, old fist. Make it, come on. Get it out there. Don't be scared. Big, bad wolf-" Derek made a fist. "Yeah, look at that. Okay, see this?-" Stiles placed his hand in front of Derek's fist. "That's maybe 3 inches of room to gather enough force to punch through solid co-" My punched Stiles' hand and he fell against the table, clutching his arm in pain. "Ah" he stumbled off away from us. "He could do it"
"I'll get through the wall. Who's following me down?" Derek said.
"Don't look at me. I'm not up to fighting speed yet, and honestly, with Isaac out of commission, you're not looking at very good odds for yourself" Peter said.
"So I'm supposed to just let them die?"
"One of them is already dead"
"We don't know that" Derek argued.
"Do I have to remind you what we're up against here? A pack of alphas. All of them, killers. And if that's not enough to scare your testicles back into your stomach, try to remember that two of them combine bodies to form one giant Alpha. I'm sure Erica and Boyd were sweet kids. They're gonna be missed" My uncle shrugged.
"Could someone kill him again, please?" I asked, shooting daggers at my uncle.
"Derek, seriously? Not worth the risk" Peter crossed his arms, leaning back against the stairs.
"What about you?" Derek turned to face Scott.
"Yeah, if you want me to come-" Stiles started.
Derek rolled his eyes. "Not you"
"Got it" he pointed at Scott.
I couldn't help but laugh.
"I don't know about Erica. But if Boyd's still alive, we have to do something" Scott said.
Peter sighed and rolled his eyes.
"We have to try" Scott continued.
Derek turned to me, raising his eyebrows.
"If it reduces to chance of you two getting your ass kicked then I'm down for it"
"Wait. But who's the other girl? The one locked in there with Boyd?" Scott asked.
"That is what we're going to find out" I said.
~
"What?" Derek asked, noticing Scott's perplexed face as we all stared up at the building.
"There's just something I can't get out of my head" Scott mumbled.
"The moon's rising, Scott. What is it?"
"Risk and reward"
"Which means what?"
"We're not measuring the risk with enough information. We don't know enough" Scott said.
"We know time's running out" Derek said impatiently.
"Yeah, but think about it. They put the triskele on your door four months ago. What have they been doing all this time? Why wait until now?"
"He has a good point" I said.
"We don't have the time to figure out every little detail" My brother replied.
"Okay, but what if this detail, the reason why they waited what if it's the most important one?" Scott said.
"Then we do nothing. And Boyd and Erica are dead. I know what I'm risking. My life for theirs" My brother jumped onto a window with bars and then onto a ladder. "And I won't blame you if you don't follow me"
Scott and I exchanged a look as Derek continued to climb the ladder.
"He's my brother. I have no choice" I waited a couple of seconds before following Derek.
Derek was punching the wall when I reached him. I heard a crash and Derek stepped out, Scott and I following behind.
"Boyd?" Derek asked.
I looked up when I heard growling.
"Boyd? It's me. It's Derek"
"Stiles, now is not the best time" I turned around and noticed Scott on his phone.
"Scott! Scott! No, listen to me, okay? Look, you gotta get outta there. Look, the walls of the vault are made with a mineral called hecatolite. It scatters the moonlight" I heard Stiles practically yell down the phone.
"What does that mean?"
That means something bad.
"We're here to get you out, okay" I heard Derek say.
"Look, it keeps the moonlight out, okay? They haven't felt the full moon in months" Stiles rushed.
"Think of it like the gladiators in the Roman colosseum. They used to starve the lions for three days, making them more vicious, more out of control. Deucalion has kept them from shifting for three full moons, diminishing their tolerance to it" My uncle explained.
"Scott, they're gonna be stronger" Stiles started.
"More savage, more bloodthirsty, Scott, they're the lions. They're the starved lions, and you, Shay and Derek just stepped into the colosseum" Peter finished.
Scott pulled the phone away from his ear and turned to face me, eyes wide with panic.
"Derek, we got a problem, a really big problem" I said.
"Cora?" I heard him question.
"Who?" Scott asked.
I turned my head in Derek's direction and noticed my sister too. "Cora?" I repeated in confusion.
"Derek, get out. Get out now!" My sister growled.
"Scott? Hey, Scott!" I heard Stiles yell.
The vault door opened and the moonlight flooded in.
Someone stepped in, closing a circle of mountain ash.
"No. No! Wait!" Scott yelled.
Cora and Boyd started to fully transform, growling and snapping at us.
I immediately jumped forwards, pushing my sister backwards. She slammed into the wall and the impact knocked her down. Scott, Derek and I stood up, backing away from the ravenous werewolves.
"You know her?" He asked Derek.
"She's my sister, my younger sister"
"What the hell is she doing here?"
"Like I have a clue. I thought she was dead!"
"She promised she'd stay in South America" I muttered.
"Wait? You knew? You knew she was alive all this time!" Derek shouted.
"I wanted to tell you but-" My eyes widened when I saw Boyd coming closer to my brother, looking extremely angry.
I opened my mouth to yell but someone beat me to it.
"Look out!"
I spun around. "Alli-"
A huge force sent me soaring backwards into the wall. My head smacked against it and I sunk to the floor in pain.
I looked up but my vision was blurry.
"No! Don't break the seal!" I heard Derek shout.
Slowly, I started to stand. I saw Allison reach down and push away some of the ash. "Boyd!" She shouted.
He let go of Scott and the two of them ran past us and out of the vault.
Derek ran over to Allison and grabbed her.
"Don't touch her!" Scott yelled at my brother who looked like he was going to rip Allison's head off.
"What were you thinking?" Derek shouted.
"That I had to do something!"
"She saved our lives" I said, walking over to stand by my friends side.
"Yeah, and what do you think they're gonna do out there? Do you have any idea what we just set free?"
"You want to blame me? Well, I am not the one turning teenagers into killers" Allison argued back.
"No. No, that's just the rest of your family" Derek snapped.
"I've made mistakes. Gerard is not my fault" Ally defended.
"And what about your mother?"
"What do you mean?" Allison asked.
"Derek-" I cautioned.
"Tell her, Scott"
Scott looked at the floor, not meeting Allison's gaze.
"What does he mean, Scott?" She asked him.
"What does he mean?"
