War begins

Brooklyn,1942

Steve

President Roosevelt has declared war on Japan and now men are being drafted and are volunteering to go on the other side of the Atlantic to fight the enemy. While I am sitting here rejected five times (I guess it is a record, probably) and even, Christine or rather 'Chris' had managed to get a job as an army nurse in the field. Yep, she became our best friend for the last 6 years. I was headed down to watch a movie with Bucky. I was waiting outside the theatre for some time and when bucky didn't finally turn up, I went inside the theatre and settled down, when an idiot started shouting," Get on with it, play the movie!" and being the patriotic idiot I was, I shouted, "Stop being disrespectful." And then I was dragged out of the theatre and was getting beaten up till Bucky came to save the day. Bucky helped me up and looking at him, I realized that he was wearing his uniform.

I asked," You drafted?" The 107th, Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes." I said, " I miss Chris, you know." "I know", he said and smiled sadly. I swear that I could see Buck thinking deeply about Chris. Bucky did have a bit of history of liking Chris but something happened between them, of which I have no knowledge. Suddenly, Bucky took the form from my hand and said, "Paramus? this time you registered as who, Steve from Ohio?", He showed the flyer to me and said dramatically, looking at my puzzled face," We are going to the future!" and put an arm around me jovially.

On reaching there I saw that Bucky had got us dates. I panicked and asked," What did you tell her about me?". He said casually," Only the good things."

                                                                                        Christine

I was in the infirmary and making rounds, being the head nurse and was rapidly firing away orders. All of a sudden, a soldier came into the tent and shouted,' Men are down, we need to bring 'em here.' and looking at me, he said,' Come on Christine, we need to bring the men in. We need one more person.' I wasted no time and rushed to the field. I started ordering men around and taking a stretcher went into the field. Everything was moving around me in a haze. Little did I know what was going to happen.

                                                                                        James

I was staring at the flying car on the stage and turned back to say something to Steve but he had vanished. 'Here we go again' I thought to myself and went off to look for Steve. I looked around and saw an enlisting center and every piece fell into the place. I went there and saw steve strolling there. Just as expected. I spoke, "Really?". He spoke," Bucky, men are laying down their lives and I haven't got any less right than them to fight." I was about to speak but steve interrupted me again and I knew that I was not going to win. Well, you can't win when you are talking with steve rogers about enlisting.

But, a voice came to my rescue. It was one of the girls. She shouted in the distance, "Hey Sarge! are we going dancing?". I replied half-heartedly with a fake smile on my face, "Yes, we are." I was going back to them but I turned and spoke to Steve," Don't do anything stupid till I get back." His sarcastic reply was, "How can I? You're taking all the stupid with you." I went back and hugged him and muttered 'punk' in his ear and he muttered back 'jerk'. God, I missed Chris too. I wished she was here. I did not want to go on this pathetic double date yet I went. Though, I don't know why? I wanted to say goodbye but she was gone.

                                                                                       Christine

I was running in the field carrying a stretcher along with one of the men. The scene of the battle horrified me. A man lay in the mud with one of his eyes hanging out of its socket, another man lay with an amputated leg. Pushing away all these thoughts, I quickly helped the soldier to place the man on a stretcher and carried him to camp but suddenly, I heard a bullet whoosh past me. I roared (how I did that, I have no idea), " It's an ambush!" and tried to carry the stretcher as fast as I could but as fate would have it, I was hit by a bullet in the arm. I almost dropped the stretcher but somehow (Don't know how), I steadied myself and carried the stretcher towards the camp when the second volley of bullets hit. A bullet hit me in the calf and this time, I staggered and fell facefirst in the mud (sounds embarrassing right now but I could have died so please be serious).

I managed to hobble my way to safety but as I approached the camp screaming my head off, "It's an ambush!" , I almost fell facefirst into the mud but I felt a pair of hands grabbing my arms and carry me to the infirmary as everything spun around me and I slipped into unconsciousness.

Later the doctors told me that I was lucky to be saved when I woke up in the hospital room because I had lost a lot of blood but I was feeling guilty because I had left the soldiers out there in the field (at this point, I am probably being irrational but I think this a part of survivor's guilt. Probably.). Good, honest and innocent men who were just doing their duty and serving their country. As I was busily guilt-tripping myself, a woman walked in the room and I recognized her as a member of staff of the SSR station with us (the 107th).

She looked at me with a warm smile but I knew better. She had kicked two soldiers in the crotch hard (they had been drinking on duty and one guy had tried to touch her ass but his wrist was broken a few moments later or so I was told). She spoke warmly," I heard about what you did back in the field there. That was brave of you. I thought that I could offer you an opportunity to serve in the field as an SSR agent. What do you say?" I couldn't believe my ears and responded enthusiastically," I would love that but I don't have any training." "You needn't worry, I will train you."She spoke in a British accent. That's how I became an SSR agent.
