Prologue

A white tom with ginger patches chased a rabbit across the moor, his blue eyes fearful that he wouldn't catch it. It was leaf-bare and prey was scares, so he needed to catch the rabbit for his mates and kits. He kicked up his speed and he pounced, killing the rabbit neatly and cleanly. The blue-eyed WindClan tom picked up the rabbit and began to pad back to camp as snow fell.

. . .

The ginger-patched tom carried the rabbit into the nursery, his mate, Echodawn, lay in there with her tail wrapped around his kits.

"Can I see them, Echodawn?" he asked his mate.

"Okay, Pigeonwing, you've waited long enough," Echodawn moved her tail to reveal the kits.

There was a dark grey, almost black, she-kit with green eyes, Eveningkit a grey she-kit with pale brown patches and amber eyes and green eyes and a dark brown tom-kit and blue eyes. Pigeonwing stared at them in silence.

"I've already named the she-kits," Echodawn broke the silence. "The dark grey one is Hollykit and the grey she-kit with pale brown patches is Eveningkit. I wanted you to name your son."

Pigeonwing looked at his son again, then remember what Holly Fall had told him the last time they'd met.

"Tunnelkit," Pigeonwing decided. "His name is Tunnelkit."

"Yes, I love you, Pigeonwing," Echodawn whispered. "I always have."

"I know you have. And I always will."
