Chapter 3

"Bluekit, Pouncekit, Dapplekit, Houndkit, and Nutkit, you have all reached the age of six moons and are ready to start your training. From now on, until you have earned your warrior names, you'll be known as Bluepaw, Pouncepaw, Dapplepaw, and Houndpaw." Featherstar spoke as she sat beside Squirrelstar on her den where she called meetings. "Talonswipe, you are worthy of becoming Dapplepaw's mentor. I expect you to teach everything you know to her as Oakclaw taught you. You will be the mentor of Dapplepaw." Squirrelstar meowed as she watched the she-cat skip over to Talonswipe. The two touched noses before she moved on. "Brackenfur, you are worthy of becoming Houndpaw's mentor. I expect you to teach everything you know to him as Firestar and Graystripe had taught you. You will be Houndpaw's mentor." Squirrelstar continued as Featherstar nodded. "Breezepelt, you are worthy of becoming Pouncepaw's mentor. I know you were with the Dark Forest but I trust you and you have redeemed yourself after that battle. I expect you to teach everything you know to Pouncepaw as Whitetail taught you all she knew. You shall be the mentor of Pouncepaw." The gray tabby she-cat meowed as Squirrelstar's pelt bristled a little. She never trusted the tom who tried to kill Lionblaze, Jayfeather, and Hollyleaf. She didn't trust him still to this day, she never liked him. Although she trusted his father Crowfeather, he and Crowfeather were completely different. She knew she had to be a leader with wisdom and all that, but she knew he fought for the Dark Forest willingly. He tried to kill his own Clanmates, and yet, his Clan still trusted him. The dark ginger she-cat gave a small sigh before her whiskers twitched irritably. I guess I can't judge him. Especially since Featherstar is sheltering us. I'm ThunderClan's leader, I shouldn't be judging cats so easily. But I'll keep an eye on him. She told herself as she knew Featherstar was waiting for her to announce Bluepaw's mentor. "Brightheart, you are worthy of becoming Bluepaw's mentor. You have pulled through the worst, whether it was physically or mentally. You are a strong spirit with a kind heart. I expect you to pass on what you know to young Bluepaw as Whitestorm did to you. You will mentor Bluepaw." Squirrelstar meowed as she saw the white she-cat's face light up, her one blue eye sparkled like glistening water. She knew Brightheart was waiting for an actual apprentice she could see grow up to be a fine warrior. Jayfeather wasn't ever really her "apprentice" and so, the two were never really close. But she knew that Brightheart is a kind-hearted warrior with a wise, compassionate mind who saw potential in every cat, whether evil or good. Bluepaw's face lit up too as she skidded over to her mentor who smiled brightly at her. Her mate Cloudtail sat beside her and smiled brightly as well as he was happy that his mate got an apprentice she could mentor for the next six moons. Nutkit was staring up at Featherstar with wide yellow eyes, he was waiting for his name to be called but he thought they had forgotten about him as he lowered his head sadly. "Nutkit, it has come to me that you wish to train as a medicine cat than a warrior, is that true?" Featherstar asked the black kit as he nodded after lifting his head surprisingly. "You will now be known as Nutpaw until you have earned your full medicine cat name at the Moonpool with your mentor. I expect that Tatteredleaf trains you well as Kestrelflight did. But you may train alongside ThunderClan's medicine cat's as well, Jayfeather and Leafpool, is that fine with you?" The WindClan leader asked the mother and son as they sat beside each other. Jayfeather simply nodded as Leafpool smiled slightly. "It's fine." She responded with a purr as some of the WindClan and ThunderClan cats gave her dirty looks that burned into her soul, but she ignored them. Crowfeather although, didn't even glance at her as he kept his head high and forward. "Then Nutpaw may train with all the medicine cats here, but his main mentor is Tatteredleaf." Featherstar declared as she lifted her tail. "Dapplepaw! Houndpaw! Pouncepaw! Bluepaw! Nutpaw! Dapplepaw! Houndpaw! Pouncepaw! Bluepaw! Nutpaw! Dapplepaw! Houndpaw! Pouncepaw! Bluepaw! Nutpaw!" Both WindClan and ThunderClan chanted their names as they were excited of having so many apprentice within both Clans.

It had been three moons since Bluepaw, Pouncepaw, Houndpaw, Dapplepaw, and Nutpaw had been apprenticed. Nutpaw had been really busy and held up as all the medicine cat's were teaching him. Dapplepaw was always beside Pouncepaw which irritated Bluepaw as she didn't like the dappled she-cat. And Houndpaw was always busy training with Brackenfur and his brother Thornclaw. It had been about eight and a half moons since Finchkit and Mottlekit were taken away by a falcon. Bluepaw still remembers her sister's screams along with Mottlekit's and can't take their screams out of her head. Bluepaw enjoys her mentor Brightheart and respects her as she asked the ThunderClan elders about the scarred she-cat. Sandstorm and Graystripe told her all about her mentor. "Brightheart was a young, ambitious cat who followed another apprentice named Swiftpaw. Brightheart and Swiftpaw at this time went to an area in the old forest called Snakerocks. At this time, there was a loose dog pack in ThunderClan territory. Tigerstar called them 'his' dog pack as they were half trained. Tigerstar had led a trail of dead rabbits towards ThunderClan camp once but Firestar found it in time to stop them from destroying their camp." Sandstorm had meowed as she had lifted her tail in the air behind her, her pale ginger pelt was dull with age but her green eyes showed the life in the moons she was a young warrior of ThunderClan. "Bluestar, the leader before Firestar, was in dark times and didn't trust any cat other than Firestar and his apprentice Cloudtail. So when Firestar requested Cloudtail to earn his warrior name, Bluestar only did Cloudtail's warrior ceremony, but Swiftpaw and Brightheart were frustrated along with a few other apprentices." The pale ginger she-cat had explained as Purdy, Millie, Specklemoss, Whitetail, and Logtail listened with interest. "Some were older and more experienced than Cloudtail and yet, he was given his warrior name before they could. So, Swiftpaw decided that if he would fight off the dog pack, he would gain Bluestar's attention and get his warrior name, along with Brightheart who tagged along. Brightheart was in love with Swiftpaw at that time but when they faced the dog pack, Swiftpaw was brutally killed and Brightheart lost her eye, her ear, and her left side of her face was scarred. Brightheart had blacked out and was out for a few days but once Firestar persuaded Bluestar to give her her warrior name if she were to die, Bluestar chose a name no cat would expect her to choose." Sandstorm had told in a dark voice as she remembered the name Bluestar had given Brightheart after her face was torn to shreds by Tigerstar's half-trained dog pack. "Her warrior name Bluestar gave her was Lostface." Graystripe had said in a dark and sad tone, he was clearly hurt in the past by their trusted leader naming Brightheart such a name. "Brightheart was told of her warrior name and soon, recovered. Cloudtail had been worried for Brightheart ever since he heard that she and Swiftpaw were attacked. He stayed by her side all the time, and through it all, he comforted her. Cloudtail was the only cat who loved Brightheart enough to persuade her to keep fighting and he told her often that she was beautiful. Thus giving Brightheart her spirit to fight back and recover from her injuries. As Bluestar died and Firestar became leader, Firestar knew that Lostface was not the name for such a beautiful, young cat such as Brightheart. So in the end, Firestar gave Brightheart her prefix 'Bright' again as her apprentice name was that, and added the suffix 'heart' for her loving and fighting heart she had." The old gray tom had spoken in a soft tone that sounded raspy. Bluepaw had been in awe of her mentor's past and how she fought against what she saw was impossible. She was also in awe that she had the same name as the leader before great Firestar. "Ever since that day, Brightheart has always been by Cloudtail's side no matter what. She endured all of the fights and battles Cloudtail had endured. Brightheart was truly worthy of her name." Graystripe said with a scratch of his cheek, the elders still listened as Purdy had put his head to his paws. "Brightheart may not look as pretty as the other she-cat's in the Clan, but she is the most beautiful cat to Cloudtail in his heart and mind." Sandstorm had finished with a smile to Bluepaw as she had smiled back too. Then Bluepaw was brought back from her memories as Squirrelstar and Featherstar lifted their tails. They had called for a meeting. "The Gathering is tonight, we will announce who will join us to the Gathering." Featherstar meowed as the cats gathered below her. Squirrelstar waited for the WindClan leader patiently as she went first. "Hootwhisker, Kestrelflight, Tatteredleaf, Crowfeather, Breezepelt, Heathertail, Brindlefoot, Furzepelt, Ferntail, Sedgewhisker, Leaftail, Ryeheart, Rainskip, Tansycloud, Nutpaw, Wollypaw, Paddlepaw, Archflower, Whitetail, and Logtail if they choose." The WindClan leader meowed as she stepped back for the dark ginger leader to speak. "Fawnstrike, Leafpool, Jayfeather, Brackenfur, Thornclaw, Cloudtail, Brightheart, Darkwing, Lilyheart, Cinderheart, Lionblaze, Dovewing, Ivypool, Oakclaw, Mossbreeze, Briarlight, Bumblestripe, Cherryfall, Molewhisker, Snowbush, Ambermoon, Dewnose, Stormcloud, Hollytuft, Fernsong, Sorrelstripe, Alderfall, Sparkfire, Talonswipe, Honeypaw, Dapplepaw, Pouncepaw, Houndpaw, Bluepaw, Icesong, Graystripe, Sandstorm, Purdy, and Specklemoss if they choose to come." Squirrelstar meowed as her ear twitched. Bluepaw was excited that she and her fellow apprentices would be going to the Gathering, she felt like she was going to meet the cats apprentices would always be eager to meet, but then she remembered. "Rowanstar is the cat who chose to take ThunderClan territory. Though his cats disagreed with it, the leader's word is law, as the warrior code states. If Featherstar wasn't so kind, we wouldn't even have a home." Squirrelstar had told her the other day before the elders told her about Brightheart about ShadowClan taking ThunderClan's territory. She didn't know if they were going to do about it or stay with WindClan but she knew that she liked the forest and she didn't feel as comfortable here than in the forest where she was supposed to be. Maybe Finchkit wouldn't have been dead if Rowanstar hadn't been so selfish. Bluepaw thought as she then shook her head. Bluepaw had heard from Squirrelstar and Featherstar the other night that they were going to plan an attack when they have a bit more warriors so no deaths resulted in the future battle. Bluepaw hoped that what they meant by more warriors they meant when she and her friends become warriors. She let a smile appear on her face as she bounced over to Houndpaw and Nutpaw who were chatting after the two leaders dismissed the Clan. "Hey!" Bluepaw greeted her friends as she joined them, she smiled brightly at the two apprentices as they turned to her. "Hi there, Bluepaw." Nutpaw meowed rather shyly as the black tom lowered his ears. "Hey Bluepaw. I can't wait till we get to the Gathering!" Houndpaw squealed as he bounced about. "I know! It'll be our first and I hope I get to meet a whole bunch more cats!" Bluepaw meowed excitedly, her tail weaving back and forth as her blue eyes glittered. "We have to be careful of ShadowClan though." Nutpaw said as he lifted his ears, his eyes flickered with fear. "I was told when I was a kit that Rowanstar is a feared cat, he's strong and he's mean." Nutpaw said fearfully as his fur puffed up. "Aw, come on now Nutpaw. I'm sure he's not dumb enough to hurt us apprentices." Bluepaw said as she nudged Nutpaw teasingly as his spirit lifted, he then pushed Bluepaw off balance and she fell. "Hey!" Bluepaw let out a playful hiss as she then leaped up onto Nutpaw, Houndpaw backed up and silently, bunched up his muscles and readied himself to pounce. Nutpaw squealed as he fell back, he wasn't used to fighting so he felt defenseless. "Oh, sorry Nut-" Bluepaw stepped off of him but was cut off as Houndpaw tackled her from behind. Nutpaw rose to his paws and watched the two apprentice wrestle, laughing. Bluepaw and Houndpaw wrestled as they were in a ball of fur, whirling around as they batted at each other. Soon, the two split from one another as Houndpaw panted. "Where do you get all that energy?" Houndpaw panted, struggling to get some air into his lungs as Bluepaw puffed out her chest fur. "I don't know, but what I do know is that I must be the most hyper apprentice to ever live!" Bluepaw smiled, boasting playfully as she sat straight.
