Chapter Two

I sat down on the edge of Spark's territory, wrapping my tail over my paws. Why is she taking so long? I huffed, a cloud of my warm breath slowly drifting off to my side. It was nice out. A little chilly and breezy, but nice. While I'm waiting, I might as well do something useful. I crouched down, opening my mouth to let the scents waft in. I caught the scent of a mouse, and began slowly stalking towards the smell. Thankfully, Heron had taught me how to hunt not too long ago. As I got closer, I realized the scent was in a bush. I smiled as I leapt at the mouse, reaching forward to hook the mouse in my paws. I hissed in frustration as I came up empty-pawed. I started to walk back to my littermates before I caught scent of a squirrel. Yes! I immediately crouched down, watching the squirrel munch on an acorn under the huge roots of a large tree. There was a little, 'den', under the base of the tree where the squirrel was. I sneaked closer and pounced when the squirrel had its back to me. It squealed before it went silent and limp. I smiled in the cool weather, grabbing the squirrel in my jaws and walking back to my littermates.

"Guess what I caught?" I yowled, alerting some birds that fluttered away seconds later, but catching my littermates' attention.

Holly, my sister, opened her mouth before shutting it closed and trotting over to me. "A squirrel?! How?"

I smiled before I explained. "It trapped itself in the roots of a tree. I was hoping to share it with Spark and Amber, if he even comes."

"Sure! Come on, let's get back to the meeting place." Holly said, excited to see our kithood friends. We all walked over, a bounce in our steps. Proud of my catch, I dropped the squirrel in front of all of us as we sat down. I started to groom my pelt, getting impatient for Spark's late timing. I heard a loud yowl before I turned to see a ginger blob running towards me at full speed.

"Spark!" I meowed, crashing into the ground at the larger weight. I rolled around on the ground, getting dirt and dust caught in my fur. But I just groomed myself! I huffed as Holly stifled a laugh. We stopped rolling, Spark on top of me. "You.... are... crushing... me..." I meowed through breaths.

"Sorry!" Spark laughed as she jumped off of me, nuzzling my sister. Of course, my brother, Wolf? Asleep. I smiled as I ran over to Wolf, jumping up and down on his back. He grunted and I got off of him as he sat up, his fur spiking everywhere. I laughed at his crazy fur, his drowsy light amber eyes half closed.

"What is so funny? Why are you laughing at me?" Wolf huffed, slouching down. Holly and Spark ran over, staring at Wolf like he was a crazy beast. They both burst out laughing, Holly rolling around on the ground. "What? Why are you guys laughing at me?" Thankfully there was a pond nearby that I passed by on the way here. I signaled for Wolf to follow, bringing him to the edge of the pond. He gasped as he saw his messy fur, frantically trying to lick it down. There is one thing you should know about Wolf. His fur can never be tamed. I laughed, running back up the small hill I took Wolf down. I grabbed the dead squirrel and ran over to Holly and Spark, who were telling of their lives between visits. I sat in front of Spark, setting down the good-sized squirrel.

"You caught that? Cool!"

"I was hoping Amber would be here too.... is he?" I meowed, sad one of my friends hadn't shown up.

"No, he's not here. Yet." Spark smiled, licking a paw and drawing it over a dusty ear.

"Wolf! Come eat!" Holly put her ears back and raised her head, yowling. A black and white ball of fur came hurtling into the clearing, huffing as it sat down between me and Spark. We dug into the squirrel, joking around and having a good time. I smiled when we had finished eating, lying down on the smooth grass. Just when we were listening to a funny story by Spark, we heard two yowls calling us.

"Storm! Holly! Wolf! Time to go!"

"Spark! We have to go!"

I huffed before slowly getting up and saying my goodbyes to Spark. I nuzzled her cheek, licking her shoulder afterwards. It was kind of our thing when we had to go our separate ways. When we were done saying goodbye, I ran to the sound of my mother's voice, my littermates not too far behind. We walked back to our nests, lying down in a huddle under the darkening sky. I smiled before closing my eyes, drifting off to sleep.
