Prologue

A cool breeze flowed through the night air making the trees whisper silently in the wind. A half-moon hung in the star-filled sky casting down a dim light into the forest below. Two cats padded through the undergrowth silently. The leading cat, a thick-furred, broad-shouldered, light gray tom with brilliant ice-blue eyes, huffed as he pick up the pace. "Hurry. We're almost there."

"Skystar, where exactly are we going?" panted the second cat, a small pale gray tom with white patches like clouds and very pale water-blue eyes.

Skystar didn't slow when he slid past a large bramble bush. "No time to explain right now, Cloudstar. Not even I am certain."

Cloudstar, having shorter legs, struggled to keep pace with the SkyClan founder. "Then how do you know where you're going? When you asked me to come with you I thought you just wanted to speak to me in private. Not lead me out of our territory."

"Patience," Skystar meowed. "We'll learn more when we arrive. Someone has summoned me through a vision. That is all I know."

Cloudstar's eyes widened as he padded along. "A vision? From who?"

"I don't know," Skystar replied. "I couldn't see, and I didn't recognize the voice that spoke. I was just told to head west from our territory to a small pool of water."

"Were you told why? It must be something important for you to be summoned outside of our own skies," Cloudstar said with a hint of worry in his voice.

"No, but you could be right," Skystar said. "I fear something is coming to our Clan that they may not be prepared for." The two former SkyClan leaders carried on in silence until they emerged out of the undergrowth into a small hallow in the earth. At the bottom of the hallow a small pool of water filled the center. The night sky reflected brightly off the smooth surface as if the sky itself were trapped in the pool. Skystar looked along the shoreline and spotted three shadowy figures sitting at the edge. Three pairs of eyes looked up at them as they slowly approached. One of the cats, a large, lean short-furred, ginger tom with a flame-colored, sleek, thick pelt, a pale orange belly, and bright, emerald-green eyes, stood up and padded up to Cloudstar.

Cloudstar purred in recognition when the tom approached. "Firestar! It's good to see you again. What are you doing here?"

"It's good to see you again, too, Cloudstar." Firestar nodded. "I could ask you the same. Your skies are far from here."

"As are yours." Skystar meowed stepping between them. "I am Skystar, founder of SkyClan."

Firestar bowed his head in greeting. "It's an honor to meet you. But why are you here? Have you had the vision as well?" Both toms nodded. Just then they were interrupted as the two other cats padded up from the shore. One was a broad-shouldered, pale blue-gray she-cat with soft, long fur, a broad face and head, silver hair tinged around her muzzle and tail, a torn ear, a scar that parts the fur across her shoulders, a long, sleek tail, and luminous, ice-blue eyes. The other was a skinny, battle-scarred, grizzled, dark gray she-cat with a broad, flattened face, bony haunches, long, ragged, patchy, thick, matted fur, torn, ragged ears, cracked, broken, blackened yellow teeth, and bright orange eyes.

"What are SkyClan cats doing here?" asked the dark-gray she-cat.

Firestar gestured to the two she-cats. "These are Yellowfang and Bluestar. They too have had the vision to come here."

Bluestar dipped her head in greeting, but then looked at them with serious eyes. "This must be big if SkyClan cats were summoned as well, but who was it that did so?"

As if waiting for her to ask, a deep rumbling voice sounded from the undergrowth nearby. "I did." All the cats' heads turned in the direction it came from. A large lumbering figure came walking out of the shadows. The white stripe of a badger glowed in the dim moonlight. The SkyClan cats' fur bristled in fear at the sight of the large beast.

"It's okay," Firestar assured them. "This is Midnight. She's harmless to cats." He then padded up to the badger as she got closer. "Why have you brought us here?"

Midnight only walked past him towards the pool of water. "Follow." All the Clan cats looked at each other before following the badger to the edge of the water. When they all gathered around, Midnight lightly touched the surface of the water with a large claw. The water shimmered slightly before an image of a young ginger-and-white she-cat with light green eyes appeared on the surface. "Much to discuss we have..."
