Chapter 6 - Tour of the Territory

"Goldenclaw?" Frostleaf mewed. "You became a warrior?" Goldenclaw's eye twitched and he replied, "After meeting you, I decided to go on a little journey. I let my paws guide me and here I am, trained and being a respected warrior."

"Follow me to our camp," he mewed, headed off deeper into the woods." She followed quickly, excited to meet the strange new clan.

The trees began to thin out the deeper they went. Soon, it opened up to a clearing, and Frostleaf saw glimpses of strong looking dens.

Goldenclaw led her past the gorse tunnel, like the one in ThunderClan camp. Nervously she stepped in, wondering what will be reaction of the DragonClan cats.

Some of them gave her curious looks, while the others looked hostile, ready to attack when the leader tells them to. When she caught the eye of a reddish orange tom, he stared at her like she grew a second tail.

A ginger tom stood near a ledge, and he seemed that he was expecting her. Goldenclaw left her and joined the gathering crowd of warriors.

"Welcome to DragonClan," the tom greeted politely. "I am Dragonstar, the leader of DragonClan. You must be the cat that StarClan sent to us. But according to our traditions, you must prove yourself as a worthy warrior before you complete what StarClan wants you to do."

Frostleaf nodded. It only seemed reasonable that she should prove herself first. "I will introduce you to some of the clan," Dragonstar mewed.

"This is Snakefang, my deputy," he said, gesturing to a pale golden tom. He turned to a she-cat with the scent of herbs on her pelt.

"This is Forestbrook, our medicine cat," he mewed. "I will tell the clan of your arrival before they get more hostile."

Dragonstar jumped up the rock. "We have a guest from a different clan," he announced. "Her name is Frostleaf and StarClan has sent her to complete a mission in our clan. Please be nice to her as she stays here for a couple of days."

"But she will take our prey that we need for leaf-bare!" a tom protested, glaring at Frostleaf.

"She will be expected to hunt for us but before she does, Goldenclaw will show her our territory," Dragonstar mewed evenly. "And Wavetail, I expect better responses from a Class Three warrior. The clan is dismissed."

Wavetail gave her another glare before padding off.

"He's been tense and hostile ever since he found out that he might lose his rank as a class three warrior," Goldenclaw's voice surprised her.

"Oh," Frostleaf replied in understanding. "What are class three warriors?"

"Basically, if you have a higher class, you will be more well respected, and usually have a higher chance to be deputy," he replied. "Come, I will show you our territory."

Goldenclaw led her outside the camp. "This is a stream that is used as a border. When we are short of prey, cats that can hunt fish would come here to fish instead of the lake."

Frostleaf looked at the gently flowing stream and nodded. For a moment she wondered if she should try catching a fish, but she decided not to.

"Hurry up," Goldenclaw grumbled impatiently. Frostleaf sighed and followed him. As she padded after him, she caught a whiff of a Thunderpath.

"Why is there a Thunderpath here?" she asked. He shrugged. "It's abandoned a very long time ago. No monsters here, and there is an abandoned Twoleg nest nearby. It's a good place to grow herbs."

Frostleaf felt a pang of envy. Back in the forest, there were no suitable places to grow herbs, and in leaf-bare there seemed to have never enough herbs for sick cats.

"Lucky," she commented. The golden tom turned to look at her. "I know." His dark amber eyes bore into her blue eyes, she suddenly felt that she had known him for moons, not a few days.

"You seem familiar," Goldenclaw mumbled. "Like I have known you for ages."

"I feel that way too!" Frostleaf exclaimed in surprise. He said nothing, only holding his stare longer before breaking off.

"I'm not the only one," he mewed finally. "I could tell in the surprise and tense feeling of some of the other cats that they know you too."

Before she could reply, a voice spoke first. "Why are you two standing there and talking instead of doing something useful?"

It was the reddish orange tom that gave her a strange look at the meeting. A smaller tom stood beside him, looking evenly at both of them.

"Sorry Blaststorm," Goldenclaw replied. "I was just answering Frostleaf's questions." Blaststorm nodded and mewed, "Bring back some prey while you're at it. Come on, Fourpaw."

When they left, Frostleaf asked, "Is Fourpaw his apprentice?" Goldenclaw nodded wordlessly and mewed, "It's about time we get back. Let's go quickly."

He walked off but Frostleaf was distracted by a rustle of leaves behind her. She saw Fourpaw emerging from the bushes, but there was no sign of his mentor.

"Where is your mentor? You shouldn't wonder around," she mewed to him. He didn't reply, only placing his paw on her head.

Dizziness engulfed her and she fell unconscious.
