Moonlight filled a large protected clearing, spotted by trees overhead. Silence was all you could hear. Creatures gathered around a small opening and a loud painful cry sounded out from it. A creature stepped forward into a beam of moon, and was outlined into a wolf, black as night.
        "Moon," He called into the opening, "What is happening in there?"
A light grey she-wolf popped her head out. "Be patient, Darktooth! Having pups takes time." She went back inside as another cry rang out.
        Darktooth sat down, whiskers twitching with impatience. Then all went silent again and Moon came back out, a big smile on her face.
        She locked eyes with the black wolf, "Darktooth, would you like to see your pups?" Again she went back into the hollow and he followed. Inside was dark, but just light enough to see well. There was a grey wolf in a nest with two little pups laying at her belly.
        The grey wolf slowly opened her eyes and looked up. "Darktooth..." She smiled and lifted her head to greet him.
        He touched noses with her. "Lie down your head, Wing. You need rest." He turned to the pups, "What's wrong with that one?" Both him and Moon looked at the pups, one, red and orange, wriggling and furiously suckling at its mothers stomach and the other, black like its father, laying very still, too still.
        Moon's eyes widened. "Can you give us some time please, Darktooth!" She shooed him out and went back to Wing. She bent down and sniffed the unmoving pup. It still didn't move, even after she nudged it. She put her nose on it's chest, checking for a heart beat. Nothing.
        Outside the other wolves waited, slightly impatient. Moon walked out, head down, and behind her Wing howled a sad and grief filled howl, the other wolves following after, Darktooth's the loudest.
        When all the noise died down Moon spoke up. "Wing has decided that her remaining pup will be named Flame where there is no light, for as I realized the other poor pup was no longer with us, I saw an omen. Flame, well, she will light our way in the dark."
