Chapter 1

The warm sun was shining through the leaves, causing a dappled appearance on the kits and their mother as Goldenkit was play-fighting his brother Silverkit in the nursery until he suddenly heard distressed yowling. Stopping, the golden tabby looked at his mother with his large gray eyes and asked, "Petalpelt, what's going on?"

"I don't know, Goldenkit." Petalpelt said quietly as she turned toward the entrance of the nursury "I'll go look. Stay inside the nursery." Petalpelt answered as her black pelt left the warm den.

"Hey, Goldenkit," Silverkit whispered quietly, leaning towards the golden tabby tom, "Why don't we go outside and see what's going on?"

Goldenkit nodded, eyes sparkling, ready for any kind of mischief. The brothers tried to crawl through the entrance but, it was blocked by a large brown branch filled with bright green leaves. The kits tried to move the branch, but weren't yet strong enough to move it, so they had to go through their own exit. A small hole that no warrior has found still. The two kit brothers just barely fit through the tiny tunnel and made it out onto a very small, thin branch that could barely take their weight.

The golden and silver tom walked as carefully as they could, tails waving to mainly keep their balance, though mostly to make sure that they could catch themselves if they fell, across the branch until they got to the main branch trail to that led cats in and out of the nursery and elder's den. Then, they raced across, sometimes carefully jumping over each other in joy that they made it, until they got to the clearing.

The two happy toms hunkered down and watched quietly. There, a she-cat was crying and yowling something incoherent towards the medicine cat who just so happened to be telling the she-cat that she was pregnant.

"When does she need to go into the nursery, Glaciersnout?" Petalpelt asked worriedly, sitting next to the light gray she-cat, trying to soothe her. Glaciersnout just shook his head.

"Please, Glaciersnout, don't let this be true!" An elder yowled, probably the bawling she-cat's mother.

"I'm sorry, Rainfish." Glaciersnout said quietly, "Maybe Cinderleaf will make it like Petalpelt, but until then, let's hope that StarClan will spare her."

The two kits, overhearing most of it, looked at each other, confused. What's so wrong about having kits, Goldenkit asked himself wanting to ask the medicine cat. When he saw his mother standing up and was coming towards the nursery, he decided to ask the medicine cat later and rushed off, along with his brother back to the way they came to the nursery.

The two toms sat, flicking their tails with ears flattened in thought. Goldenkit was curious about the she-cat's odd behavior, and from what Petalpelt told them, she was very cautious and can overthink many things from how to stalk her prey to how she holds onto a branch upside down to gathering her favorite fruit that she hides from the others. His thinking was interupted, however, by the rustle of branches and leaves made only by Petalpelt.

"Petalpelt, what was all of that yowling about?" Goldenkit asked innocently.

The she-cat's fur spiked a bit in fear as she mews, "Oh, it was nothing. Just some tom wailing about having to sit in the medicine den for a moon."

Both of the toms looked at each other in worry as they knew that she was lying, but went along with it knowing the things that Petalpelt could do if a kit misbehaves.

"Hey!" Petalpelt said suddenly, jolting the toms out of their thoughts, "How about we go see Tidespirit?"

The toms looked at each other in surprise and nodded at the black she-cat wildly, obviously wanting to see him. The trio soon left the warm den and carefully made their way down the branch that was barely wide enough for a cat, but widened in width as they got closer to the trunk that served as the clearing.
