Chapter 5:
Jaypaw woke up in his nest. He looked around to see Gorsepaw smiling at him, her brown eyes glimmering with excitement. "Let's go sneak off to the moonpool and share tongues with StarClan!"she exclaimed.
"But... Never mind. Let's go!" They slipped out of the apprentices den. "Let's go through the secret exit in the dirtplace tunnel." He whispered. Gorsepaw nodded excitedly. Once they climbed out of camp, they began racing to the WindClan border.
"Wow! The stream looks cooler than I imagined..." Gorsepaw whispered in amazement.
Jaypaw blinked in confusion. "Didn't you see it yesterday when we were made apprentices?" He asked.
Gorsepaw tipped her head to the side. "Oh yeah. I did." She began running up the slope. "Race you there!" She called over her shoulder.
"H-hey! Wait up, that's not fair!" Jaypaw cried. As they ran, birds began to follow them towards a large bush. Gorsepaw went right in. As Jaypaw followed more slowly, his paws slipped into ancient paw prints. He remembered how the elders used to tell him and Gorsepaw that cats before the clans arrived had made those paw prints. When he padded down the small overhang, Gorsepaw was already asleep by a small pool of water surrounded by smooth stone. Jaypaw leaned forward an touched the water with his muzzle. A cold chill ran down his spine, and everything went black.

Jaypaw woke with a gasp. "Gorsepaw!" He exclaimed. "That was amazing last night!" He looked around, trying to find Gorsepaw curled up and asleep, but she was nowhere to be seen. Sadness washed over Jaypaw as he remembered the events from the previous day. Gorsepaw had been taken away by the fox, and nobody had went after her.
"Jaypaw." A voice called from outside of the den. "It's time for training." It was Iceleap. Jaypaw poked his head out of the den entrance.
"Can't I have a break today?" He murmured blankly.
"No. I'm sorry, Jaypaw. I know it must be hard for you, but, there's nothing I can do to help. You just have to stay strong." The silver tom mewed.
Jaypaw sighed. "It's just... Not the same without Gorsepaw..." He faltered, thinking for a moment. "Why did nobody help her?"
Iceleap muttered something under his breath before responding. "I'm not sure. But... At least she gets to see Fernleaf, right?"
Jaypaw shoved his way through the entrance to his den, and met Iceleap's gaze with a glare. "Who said Gorsepaw's dead?" He snapped. Iceleap glowered at his apprentice.
"Let's just get to training." Iceleap growled. "Today we're learning how to stalk a bird. We're going to the Great Oak."
