Chapter 24:
Gorsepaw plunged into the darkness of the twoleg nest. A dusty scent bathed her tongue, the faintest of twolegs as well. She looked around, and spotted dark green eyes glistening in the shadows. "Who are you?" A voice growled.
"S-sorry to barge in..." Gorsepaw stuttered. "But—I am Gorsepaw of ThunderClan... And I was told that you are a former clan cat... Shatterfoot."
A dark cream tom with dark green eyes stepped out of the shadows. "I see. And why do you wish to speak with me?"
"I wish to seek your guidance." Gorsepaw meowed. "If you are truly a former clan cat, you must know where the clans location is?"
Chip hesitated. "Yes. Yes I do know where they are. By the lake—aren't they?" Gorsepaw nodded. "Good. I just wanted to make sure my memory hadn't run away with my age." He settled down and wrapped his tail tightly around his paws.
"Could you... Could you take me to them?" Gorsepaw asked hesitantly.
Chip sighed deeply. "Most probably not. My housefolk—you know them as twolegs—are out of town, and if they come back while I am gone I would hate to worry them by my absence. But if I do take you, it will have to be for a price." He locked his green eyes with hers.
"...What would the price be?" Gorsepaw asked.
Chip shook his dusty fur and got to his paws. "I do not know just yet. If I decide to take you, you must promise to do what the price may be. Got it?"
"Got it." Gorsepaw meowed. Chip dipped his head and shooed away the white-gray-and-cream she-cat.
"Please leave," he meowed once she was at the exit. "My housefolk do not like random cats strolling in and out of my house." Gorsepaw sighed, and nodded. She padded out, breaking into the brightness of the sun with Julie, Shadow, Timber, and Butter looking at her anxiously while Cherry and Lily bounced around playfully in the grass.
"How was it?" Julie meowed nervously.
"It was fine." Gorsepaw said, and began explaining the events that had occurred inside the twoleg nest.
