Chapter 12:

Jaypaw burst awake, leaping to his paws. "Gorsepaw's alive!" He yowled without noticing what he was doing until the last second. Sound burst into the clearing as the clan woke up from the noise he made.

Honeyfern pelted into the apprentices den. "Jaypaw!" The deputy exclaimed. "What happened?"

Jaypaw gazed up at the cream she-cat with wide, gleeful eyes. "She's alive." He purred, and when Honeyfern looked at him in confusion, he corrected himself. "Gorsepaw is alive!" Honeyfern sighed.

"I know it must be hard for you," she began. "But it won't help just to make up stories so you feel happier. You need to live with the truth." By now Crowlight had entered the den, and with sudden realization of what was going on she backed slowly out into the moonlit clearing.

"But I'm not making up stories!" Jaypaw hissed desperately, staring up into Honeyfern's dark green eyes.

"Well, it seems like mouse-dung to me." Honeyfern mewed calmly, yet sternly. Jaypaw opened his mouth to protest, but Honeyfern silenced him with a glare. She got to her paws and left the den with a lash of her tail.

"False alarm!" Jaypaw heard Honeyfern yowl. He peered out of the den just in time to see the deputy leap onto the highledge.

"But why did he wake us up if it's a false alarm?" Kinkfur hissed, bristling up at Honeyfern.

"And why did he wake us up for no reason? Was it on purpose?!"

Jaypaw ducked back into the den, ashamed. As angry yowls were thrown out at the deputy, the medicine cat slid into the apprentices den, her eyes narrowed. "What was that about, Jaypaw?" The she-cat snapped.

"Gorsepaw's alive." The gray tabby tom grumbled, looking down at his paws. When he looked up, he saw Swiftheart staring at him disbelievingly. "I'm not lying! She was in my dream!" Swiftheart sighed, and wrapped her tail tightly around her paws.

"Jaypaw." The medicine cat began, locking her eyes with Jaypaw's. "Sometimes.... A dream... Is just a dream." She struggled to find the right words to use.

"But it wasn't a normal dream! Tigerstar was there!" He blurted out. At the mention of the long dead Dark Forest cat, Swiftheart's eyes sparked with worry.

"Jaypaw..." The she-cat began, her voice shaking. "Tell me more about your... Dream."

Jaypaw began explaining in extreme detail about what he had dreamt about.

"So... Tigerstar may be coming back to life?! And he showed you to Gorsepaw?" Swiftheart shook her head, inhaling deeply. "No, no, no, this must be fake—but what if it isn't? Oh StarClan help us!"

Then, she locked her eyes with Jaypaw's. "Jaypaw. This just means danger for you and Gorsepaw. I'm terribly sorry... But there may be nothing I can do to help..." The she-cat got to her paws, and looked at Jaypaw once more before leaving the den. "May StarClan light your path." She murmured.
