Chapter 9

Shadedmoon's POV:

Being alone and walking on unfamiliar territory led Shadedmoon's thoughts to go wild. As she stepped over a beetle as it crawled across the forest floor, Shadedmoon wondered where to go.

She knew Frostclan was far from Lightclan, but how far? Would be be walking aimlessly for moons to come?

"Starclan show me the way." Shadedmoon whispered, unsure whether she would get an answer or not. She saw a cat materialise in front of her and stopped with a gasp until she realised it was Brightstar. "Brightstar! Where do I go?"

Brightstar smiled and brushed her pelt against Shadedmoon's as she circled her. "Follow your heart." She whispered voicelessly before disappearing again.

Shadedmoon frowned and stared at the large expanse of twolegplace ahead of her. "Follow my heart..." she echoed Brightstar's words and blinked her yellow eyes in confusion. "How?" She took a few steps forwards and then stopped again. Shadedmoon closed her eyes and tried to imagine the way home, but nothing happened. Only empty darkness. Shadedmoon blinked her eyes open and started walking again, but slower this time.

As she walked, Shadedmoon tried to think of Frostclan. It had been so long since she had been with her clan but her memories were strong and a strong pang of longing filled her as she remembered all her friends...

When Shadedmoon focused her gaze in front of her again, she noticed a faint white mist in front of her. It quickly formed in a cat. The cat's eyes were pure white and their fur shiny but transparent. Shadedmoon couldn't tell if the cat was a tom or she cat, let alone who they were.

Then the cat opened their mouth and suddenly, voices filled Shadedmoon's ears.

"Come back Shadedstar..."

"We need you Shadedstar..."

"Shadedstar... Frostclan is in trouble."

"You must save us."

"Please return. We all miss you."

The voices were all jumbled up and Shadedmoon could barely make them out. But the last voice was so strong and clear to Shadedmoon, she knew exactly who it was as soon as her words sounded in her ears:

"Oh Shadedstar, please come back."

Shadedmoon gasped, "Lovedreams!" She felt tears well up in her eyes and she screwed them closed. "Lovedreams I'm coming." She breathed. She hoped her friend heard Shadedmoon's words to her.

Then the mist cat started walking away.

Shadedmoon followed.

Stormflame's POV:

The small flame glowed and lit up the den. Stormflame blinked his ice blue eyes as he concentrated on the flame he had created on his paw. He knew if he messed up, he could burn the whole camp down.

That wouldn't be very good...

"Stormflame?" Came Watersplash's sleepy voice. She lifted her head and turned to face Stormflame. When she saw the flame she froze in place. "Is that a... fire.. in your.. paw?"

"Yes." Stormflame meowed, not taking his eyes off the flame. He stared at the flame, willing it to grow but it stay the same. Stormflame sighed softly and shook his paw, making the flame disappear.

Watersplash stared in awe, "You're so good at using your power. Your concentration must be very strong."

"I guess it is. It doesn't take much concentration on a flame of that size though." Stormflame meowed and rolled onto his back with a small cough, "It's the big ones you gotta watch carefully."

Watersplash nodded slowly, not entirely understanding. Stormflame didn't say anything so Watersplash changed the subject. "I wonder when Nutwhisker will be back."

"He probably got lost. Or maybe he took a detour to the Leaf-bare Hunting Grounds. He enjoys that place.." Stormflame chuckled, but then realised it wasn't exactly a laughing matter.

"Why'd he go there? There's no herbs there." Watersplash whispered and swiped her tongue over her paws.

"Um," Stormflame shrugged and avoided the subject, "H-Have you eaten yet?"

Watersplash eyed Stormflame quizzically but left the subject about Nutwhisker and shook her head, "No. There is nothing to eat, the fresh kill pile is empty."

Stormflame felt a flash of curiosity, "How were things in Magiclan? Was hunting bad there too?"

Watersplash chuckled, "So now I'm being used to give you information on Magiclan?" The former medicine cat rolled her eyes but answered anyway, "If you must know, hunting was pretty bad there as well. Though we had the river to fish from so it wasn't too bad."

"A river? Where?" Stormflame narriwed his eyes.

"It passes through a small section of our territory at the very edge. We use it during leaf-bare."Watersplash meowed vaguely, "I don't fancy fish that much but Rabbitstar enjoys it."

"What's this about fish?" Nutwhisker trotted into the den. He came empty pawed. Not a herb in his mouth. His fur was ruffled and messy and his eyes were nervous.

Watersplash narrowed her eyes, "You got no herbs!"

"Couldn't find any." Nutwhisker meowed stiffly and changed the subject with an uncomfortable shake of his fur, "Why were you two talking about fish?"

"I was just mentioning that Magiclan ate fish during leaf-bare. Stormflame asked about our hunting."

"Stormflame!" Nutwhisker scolded, "Don't pry information from our guest."

Stormflame raised an eyebrow, "I was just curious."

"Yeah, and rude too." Nutwhisker muttered.

Silverstar's POV:

As Silverstar stalked back to camp, she lectured Clearlight. "You know how disrespectful it is to eavesdrop, especially by using your powers! What if we had been talking about something extremely important that meant the clan might die if anyone heard of it?"

"But you weren't," Clearlight pointed out with a guilty twitch of his tail.

Silverstar growled, "It's still rude. I would expect a senior warrior like you to be more respectfull to your clan mates."

"You won't stop me being deputy will you?" Clearlight asked with a squeaky voice.

"No, not unless you continue this behaviour." Silverstar trotted further ahead. Clearlight trotted closely behind her.

As they reached camp, Silverstar broke into another coughing fit and when she stopped, she wheezed to Clearlight, "Go to the warriors den and rest." Then she made her way to the medicine den.

Inside, the scent of sickness was much stronger than usual and Silverstar noticed Stormflame lying asleep in his nest. Wildkit slept in her smaller nest close by and Watersplash nibbled on a scrawny, half-eaten mouse. Nutwhisker stood hunched over by the herb store. Silverstar padded towards him and meowed, "Nutwhisker?"

"Yes?" Nutwhisker meowed distractedly as he pushed a small pile of shrivelled up herbs to the side of the store.

"I think I might have Whitecough..."

Immediately, Nutwhisker and face to face with Silverstar and he meowed, "Symptoms?"

"Coughing, wheezing... My throat feels a little sore too." Silverstar listed and shifted her weight from paw to paw, tense.

"Great Starclan, why now?" Nutwhisker muttered and ordered to Silverstar, "Make a nest for yourself in here." He added, "Away from Watersplash."

Silverstar dipped her head and turned away. She trotted out of camp and into the forest to find some fresh moss.

She spotted a tree with thick moss growing around it. Silverstar padded up to it and began to lift it up, making sure she didn't lift any dirt with it.

As she was about to carry the moss back to camp, a shape shot out from the bushes and landed on Silverstar. She fell under the weight and wriggled out from underneath the animal. She looked up and bared her teeth but froze when she saw the animal.

It was huge! Bigger than a fox. It almost looked like a giant cat. Its tail was quite short and swayed behind it as it eyed Silverstar hungrily. Tufts of black fur stood up from the tip of its ears and its thick light grey patterned fur fluffed up to make it look twice its size. Thicker fur grew around it's jaw. The giant cat bared its sharp fangs and a loud growl came from it. It's yellow eyes bore in Silverstar.

Then it lunged for her. Silverstar quickly felt her silver armour form on her body and she doged the massive cat but its claws latched into her tail and pulled her back. Silverstar twisted around and lashed out, catching it on its broad nose but it seemed unaffected by her claws and it pinned her down with one huge paw on her chest. The weight was crushing.

Silverstar yowled, hoping she was close enough to camp for someone to hear her. The cat growled and lifted its paw. As Silverstar scrambled to her paws, the cat brought its paw back down again with spine-crushing strength and hit her right in the back. With a loud crack, her armour broke and Silverstar collasped from the impact.

A wave of fear and terror rushed through Silverstar and her heart pounded. That thing... Whatever that is it just broke my armour! Nothing can break my armour!

Silverstar struggled to gain her footing again but winced as long claws dug into the exposed bit of her back, paralysing her with pain. Silverstar cried out and fought away tears as she felt the claws dig deeply into her flesh.

Then, with lightning speed, the cat stooped down and dug its fangs deep into Silverstar's neck. In seconds, the cat had a strong grip on her throat and her air was cut off. Silverstar gasped for breathed and writhed but the cat didn't let go until Silverstar saw black spots in her vision and eventually she felt a wave of darkness take over.

___________

If anyone is confused, the cat that attacked Silverstar was a lynx. Hehe.
