Chapter 2

Clearlight's POV:

Clearlight grumbled under his breath as he stomped into the Warriors den. The grey tabby tom settled inside his nest and a small smile of contempt met his lips as he curled up into a tight ball. It was a good thing his nest was at the centre of the den, especially with leaf-bare approaching. He stretched his jaws in a wide yawn and shut his blue eyes closed.

A dream met Clearlight's sleep and he blinked his eyes open to see he was in a dark clearing. Tall, thorny bushes surrounded the small area and Clearlight felt as if the bushes were closing in around him. He saw no sun nor stars or moon. Just an empty black abyss above his head.

He peered closer in hopes of seeing some kind of exit or another cat but found he was alone and enclosed with no escape. Clearlight's breathing picked up in speed and his fur bristled along his spine nervously.

Clearlight dared himself to speak, incase there really was someone in the dark, terrifying shadows that seemed to seep from the ground and slowly build up around him, but he wouldn't speak. Not until something happened.

It was some time before a cat approached Clearlight from the darkness. He sniffed the air to try and identify the cat but the only thing he could smell was the damp smell coming from the surrounding bushes and shadows. Only the glowing green eyes shone from the mist that surrounded the cat.

"Show yourself." Clearlight growled warningly and fluffed out his thick grey fur.

"Can you not remember the eyes of your own mate?" Clearlight recognised her voice immediately.

"Skystar!" He breathed and relaxed immediately. His fur smoothed out and a warm purr rose in his throat.

Skystar purred in reply and the shadows and bushes faded away to reveal they stood in a starry forest. Starclan Clearlight thought in awe as he stared around to see a few cats dotted around the area, playing or hanging around.

"I have noticed you are... troubled." Skystar trailed off and stepped closer, tail twitching.

Clearlight couldn't resist simply looking at Skystar and before he answered, he closed the space between himself and Skystar and pressed his nose against her's affectionately. He breathed in her sweet scent and breathed a deep sigh of relief. "I missed you, that's all."

Skystar purred but pulled away and gave Clearlight a serious stare. "I also hear you have been aggressive towards Stormflame." She meowed quizzically.

Clearlight growled, "He gets everything in life! The deputy rank, a loving mate, kits..." his voice faded away as he mentioned kits and his shoulders drooped.

"Clearlight," Skystar whispered, "We're all up here waiting for you." The white she cat edged closer and her voice came out so quiet Clearlight nearly didn't make it out. "All you need to do is die."

Clearlight didn't have time to reply because he jolted awake in his nest, gasping for breath.

Nutwhisker's POV:

Nutwhisker was dreaming.

The medicine cat was in Lightclan's camp. But the colours around him looked washed out and the sun, even though it was shining strongly, did not give out any heat. The ground underpaw was freezing and Nutwhisker felt his pawpads go numb from the cold. It felt like he was standing on snow or ice but there was none. There was no movement in the air, just cold and still. Everything was silent.

Then a cat emerged from the warriors den. It was Mousenose! The brown she cat was limping though; a deep gash on her hind leg. Nutwhisker gasped and went to help her but remembered that he was dreaming and that she wouldn't see him. As Nutwhisker peered closer, he saw Mousenose's hazel eyes were dull from starvation and it seemed that every bone in her body was visible. Her ears and tail drooped as she limped towards Silverstar. The silver she cat had been sitting at the base of the Hightree.

Silverstar was skinny too and her usually bright green eyes were narrowed and dull. Her pupils were slightly dilated, which showed how starved she was.

The two she cats spoke in hushed whispers until Mousenose sighed softly and limped towards the medicine den. Nutwhisker followed. He padded after Mousenose inside and saw himself sorting herbs hurriedly. He too was starved and his fur was unkept.

Nutwhisker saw two cats hunched in the shadows, wheezing and coughing. He leaned closer and saw it was Loveheart and Fluffystream. The two mates were pressed together reassuringly.

It was obvious to Nutwhisker, even without the horrible smell, that the two warriors had Greencough.

He turned his attention back to himself and Mousenose and caught the end of their conversation, "-your kits won't survive." His dream-self whispered to Mousenose.

Nutwhisker gasped. Mousenose was expecting kits?!

Was this some kind of horrible future that Nutwhisker was dreaming about?

Nutwhisker was about to run out the den but he was sucked out of the dream and he woke up in his nest with a gasp. At first he thought he was awake but found he was still dreaming because Skystar appeared in front of him. Her snow white pelt shone brightly and her lush green eyes glowed magnificently.

"Nutwhisker, my dear kit. Danger is coming to Lightclan. There is no stopping it, only preparation is available, and there isn't much time. Lightstar is forbidding Starclan's help for this battle. You must fight this one alone. You will lose, but also gain. And don't lose sight of what is important. Until next time..." Skystar's voice seemed to be coming from all directions and Nutwhisker grew dizzy. He was about to call out to Skystar but he was brought back down into his nest by an invisible weight and his eyes shot open and he scrambled out of his nest in a blind panic.

He tripped over something soft and fell on his side with a shocked yelp. Nutwhisker blinked his green eyes rapidly and slowed his breathing before standing up shakily and glancing down at the thing he tripped over; a mouse. He bent down to sniff it and found it was still fairly fresh. The scent of Silverstar came off it and he smiled softly. He'd have to remember to thank Silverstar for leaving him some food.

Nutwhisker's stomach rumbled hungrily, reminding him that he needed to eat and he crouched down to take a bite. He crunched down on the mouse and purred as the meat filled his mouth. He swallowed and eagerly took another bite.

Shadedmoon's POV:

"Stay off our territory!" Yowled a Magiclan warrior as a patrol of three cats trotted towards Shadedmoon's border patrol. It was Needletail, Breezeclaw and Willowfire.

Shadedmoon forced her fur to lie flat and replied calmly, "We are not on your territory. You have no right to accuse us of trespassing."

Breezeclaw lashed his tail, "Soon what you're standing on will be Magiclan territory." The tom's fiery amber gaze tore through Shadedmoon and the rest of her patrol. Whitetail shifted uncomfortably while Demonpelt hissed fiercely.

Shadedmoon kept her stance calm and meowed, "Any plans Rabbitstar has in mind will be stopped."

"Not this plan. This time Rabbitstar will win." Needletail flashed his sharp teeth and Shadedmoon felt her grey fur rise up along her spine. Her yellow eyes narrowed and she growled.

"I would suggest you don't start a fight right now." Shadedmoon's yellow gaze flickered to Demonpelt, who looked ready to tear the flesh right out of the Magiclan cats.

Sometimes Demonpelt's aggressive attitude was a little troubling. The same went with Icepaw. It seemed as though the two she cats were very similar.

Before any more drama could occur, Shadedmoon flicked her tail and started back towards the forest at a brisk pace. "Let's go back to camp. These cats aren't worth the trouble."

"Scaredy cats!" Needletail yowled after them, which earned an deep growl from Demonpelt.
