Chapter 1
"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey, gather hear below the Low Ledge for a clan meeting!" Stormstar summed the clan.
"Oh!! Yay!! I think this is our apprentice ceremony!! I'm sooo excited!!" Cheetahkit mewed.
There was a reason she was named that though. Our mom and dad thought she looked like a mini cheetah because of how small and skiny she was. I was named Tigerkit because I had the markings of a tiger. My only other brother was called Lionkit. I got no idea why though. At last, my final sister is called Leopardkit. I believe she has the markings of a leopard.
Lionkit interrupted his thoughts, "This is going to be so much fun!!! We'll get to explore the whole territory. It's probably the biggest out of all four clans!!"
"I don't know if it's the biggest, Lionkit. For what I can see, all the Clan's have the same size territory." Meowed our mother, Duskpelt. "Now come on and let me clean your fur. It's disgusting!"
"Very. Let me help. You are my kits after all." Mewed out father, Firestorm.
Firestorm is the clan deputy! Which means, me and my litermates are the kits of the clan deputy!! I hope one day I will get to be clan deputy too!
I smell Duskpelt next to me about to lick between my ears. "I CAN DO IT MYSELF!! I DON'T NEED HELP!" I duck away before she can lick me.
"Now come on Tigerkit and let me clean you one last time. I know you don't like being pitied over." Meowed Duskpelt.
"Ugh, fine." I mew and move back over to her. "This is the last time though."
Duskpelt starts to lick me, "Oh fine, you are becoming an apprentice anyways."
"Have you told Stormstar that I want to be a warrior apprentice even though I can't see?? I would hate being stuck in camp sorting herbs while my littermates are out in the forest." I mew when Duskpelt is almost finished.
"Of course dear. I know you really want to be out in the forest exploring. She said she would think about it." She mews as she moves away to help Firestorm groom Leopardkit.
"Come on guys!! Lets go!!" Meows an impatient Lionkit. He was the first to be finished being groomed.
Leopardkit quickly pulls away from Firestorm and Duskpelt and bolts away with the rest of us right beside her. Duskpelt and Firestorm follow behind. Duskpelt sits beside her sister, Dawnpelt, in the outskirts of the crowd. Firestorm takes a seat right below the Low Ledge while my littermates and I sit in the front of the crowd.
Stormstar stands at the edge of the ledge, "Lionkit, you have reached the age of 6 moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Lionpaw. Your mentor will be Berrystrike. I hope Berrystrike will pass down all he knows to you."
I sense Stormstar beckon Berrystrike over.
"Berrystrike," Stormstar starts, " you are ready to take on an apprentice. You have received excellent training from Cloudleg, and you have shown yourself to be strong and patient. You will be the mentor of Lionpaw and I expect you to pass down all you know to him."
Berrystrike touch noses with Lionpaw and Lionpaw licks his shoulder. They then go and sit down behind my littermates and I.
"Leopardkit, you have also reached the age of 6 moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Leopardpaw. Your mentor will be Blossomfoot. I hope Blossomfoot will pass down all she knows to you." Stormstar calls up Blossomfoot. "Blossomfoot, you are ready to take on an apprentice. You have received excellent training from Tallfoot, and you have shown to be patient and a quick learner. You will be mentor of Leopardpaw and I expect you to pass down all you know to her.
Blossomfoot does the same as Berrystrike had done with Lionpaw and goes to sit beside them.
I hear Stormstar beckon me over. I walk up to him.
"Tigerkit, you have reached the age of 6 moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Tigerpaw. Your mentor will be Sandclaw. I hope Sandclaw will pass down all she knows to you." I smell Sandclaw move over next to me. "Sandclaw, you are ready to take on an apprentice. You have received excellent training from Brightshadow, and you have shown yourself to be patient and great at hunting. You will be mentor of Tigerpaw, and I expect you to pass down all you know to him.
Sandclaw touchs noses with me and I quickly lick his shoulder. We go sit down next to my littermates that have already received their apprentice names. Stormstar finally calls up Cheetahkit.
"Cheetahkit, " She starts, "you have reached the age of 6 moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Cheetahpaw. Your mentor will be Amberfur. I hope Amberfur will pass down all she knows to you." Amberfur does the same as all the other new mentors and walks to stand beside Cheetahpaw. "Amberfur, you are ready to take on an apprentice. You have received excellent training from Flowerstem, and you have shown yourself to be patient and swift. You will be mentor of Cheetahpaw, and I expect you to pass down all you know to her.
Once again, Amberfur and Cheetahpaw do the same as the others and sit down beside us.
"LIONPAW!! LEOPARDPAW!! TIGERPAW!! CHEETAHPAW!!" Everyone shouts in excited meows.
"Alright, lets go to the training hollow and start with the hunters crouch." My mentor, Sandclaw, meows.
"That's a great idea Sandclaw. We can all go too." Blossomfoot adds in.
"Alright. Then, lets get going." Berrystrike meows over his shoulder, half way to the tunnel that leads out of the camp.
"Then, tomorrow we can explore the territory and show you guys the borders." Amberfur mews.
"Hey! Wait up! Can me and Spottedpaw come with you guys? She needs you work on her hunters crouch." Bramblefang meows, running up with Spottedpaw right behind.
"Yeah!! Can we come too??" Spottedpaw mews. She was only just made an apprentice 2 moons before us and sadly, her mother had passed due to greencough.
"Of course you guys can come with us, Spottedpaw." Amberpaw meows. She is always nice to everyone.
"Well, lets go before the sun sets!" Sandclaw meows, walking out of the tunnel.
~Time skip~
We finally got to the hollow after Leopardpaw tripping over almost everything that was in front of her.
"Okay. First, I will show you what the hunters crouch looks like." Sandclaw meowed. He is the best hunter in the clan, so it figures that he is the one showing us the hunters crouch.
"Tigerpaw, Leopardpaw. Do you guys need any help with your hunters crouch?" Blossomfoot asks.
"Oh, please do help. I'm not sure where to put my paws." Leopardpaw mews.
"What about you Tigerpaw. Do you need any help?" Blossomfoot asks me.
"NO! I CAN DO IT BY MYSELF!" I meowed to her.
"Now now Tigerpaw. There is no need to yell. We know you can do it by yourself. For what I have seen, you are a quick learner." He mews to me. "Now everyone show me your hunters crouch."
I hear and smell all my littermates and Spottedpaw crouch down with their paws untidly tucked under their bodies. I crouch down and keep my tail close to my side. I tuck my hind legs in, neat, to get a good pounce.
"Very good Tigerpaw! That's perfect. You will be a great hunter." Sandclaw meows to me.
"Lionpaw! Tuck your legs in a little more. Then you'll get the perfect pounce." I hear Berrystrike meowing to Lionpaw.
"Alright Spottedpaw. You almost have it. Just put your tail to your side." Bramblefang meows to Spottedpaw on the other side of the clearing.
"Okay, Cheetahpaw. Just keep your legs tucked tightly and neatly and your tail to your side. That ways your prey wont hear you." Amberfur mews to Cheetahpaw.
"Oh come on." Cheetahpaw meows, getting out of the hunters crouch. "Why do I have to learn the hunters crouch when I am probably faster than all the prey in the forest?"
"They will still hear you and get a early start. You have to be sneaky. Besides, no one is faster than a squrriel. All except SwiftClan, that is." Amberfur mews.
"Leopardpaw! That hunters crouch is very untidy. You need to tuck your hind legs in more and stop moving your tail. If you keep your tail to you side then it won't move leaves or other plants near-by." Blossomfoot mews to Leopardpaw.
"Sorry. I'll do better! I promise!!" Leopardpaw mews back.
"Okay everyone," Sandclaw meows, getting up from inspecting my hubters crouch more. "The other mentors and I will be on the other side of the clearing facing the other way. You guys have to creep up on us without us knowing. We will not use our scent though."
All the mentors go to the other side like Sandclaw had told them to and faced the other direction. Spottedpaw and my littermates get in their hunters crouch, a little better than the first time they tried it. I then get into my crouch and creep a long, long half circle around the clearing. I can still hears the others though.
"Leopardpaw! I heard you. You have to be quieter. Now lets go to the other side of the field and watch." Blossomfoot meows.
A few moments later I hear both Amberfur and Bramblefang calling to their apprentices that they heard them. They also go to the other side of the field with Blossomfoot and Leopardpaw. Finally, Berrystrike calls to Lionpaw that he heard him. At last, it was just Sandclaw, crounching confusedly in the far side of the clearing.
"Do any of ya'll see Tigerpaw? I can't see him." Sandclaw asked the others. He finally turns to face them
"Um no." All the others meow around the same time.
I slowly start to creep out of the bushes that are now right behind Sandclaw. I am about a fox lenght behind him when the others finally spot me. They start to meow to Snadclaw to turn around and when he does, I jump into a tree right that's above me. He didn't see me and turned back to the others.
"Seriously guys. I'm not aloud to use my scent. Where is he?" He mews, a little worried.
Once again, the others start to meow, telling him to look up. Right before he does, I jump down. I land square on his shoulders. I sense him about to role over and I quickly jump off.
"I GOT YOU!!!" I squeal, excited that my move worked.
"Wow. That was very good Tigerpaw. I didn't see it coming. But, how did you get behind me?" Sandclaw meows, shacking the sand out of his pelt.
"Well, I did a huge half cricle around the clearing and then waited for you to turn around." I mew.
"That's a good tactic! And when did you get into the tree?" Sandclaw asked
"I jumped up right before you turned back around." I meow, jumping back into the tree to show him.
"And I thought you couldn't see." Sandclaw mews, a little confused.
"I can't. But I can sense where things are located and tell how low or high they are." I meow to him.
"Wow. I think I will suggest tree battle practice to Stormstar. I'm sure she will like it." Sandclaw meows, turning back to face the others.
"Now that most of you got your hunters crouch down, lets test it on real prey." Sandclaw meows. The other mentors nod in agreement.
Everyone splits into 2 groups. One group with two apprentices and two mentors and one group with three apprentices and three mentors.
My mentor and I are in a group with Lionpaw and his mentor and everyone else is in the other group.
My group heads towards the SwiftClan border and the other group heads towards the StreamClan border. I think. I'm not sure.
We stop halfway to the border and our mentors face us.
"Okay you two. What do you smell?" Berrystrike asks us.
I part my jaws and sniff the air. I hear Lionpaw do the same. Immediately, I smell a family of squrriels, two mice, and a shrew.
"I can smell a shrew!" Lionpaw blurts out before I can say anything.
"I can smell more. I smell a family of squrriels, two mice, and the same shrew." I mew.
"Very good Tigerpaw. But I only smell the shrew and one mice." Sandclaw meows.
"I smell the same." Berrystrike says right after. "If you can smell that much, then go catch one of each, or try."
I get into my hunters crouch and quietly move forward. I can hear the squrriels scurrying one tree ahead of me. I quickly climb up the tree next to me and go to a branch level with a squrriel. I quickly jump to the other tree and land on the squrriel. I nip it on the neck and jump down.
"I got one." I mew, dropping the squrriel I had just caught.
"Wow. I didn't even smell it until you jumped down from the tree." Lionpaw meows, walking over to sniff the squrriel.
"One second" I meow before I crouch down and quietly move over to a holly bush. I can hear a mouse nibbling on a nut with another mouse right next to it, as if keeping guard. I quickly take the chance to jump up and swipe out both front claws. I feel them tug on fur and the little bodies go limp.
I pick up the two mice and walk back over to the others.
"The reason you guys only smelled one was because you didn't focus hard enough on them to notice that there where two right beside each other." I meow, dropping the mice beside the squrriel.
"Well, aren't you smart." Sandclaw meows, "and I'm the best hunter in the clan. I think I was just replaced."
Everyone starts to laugh a little."Alright, Lionpaw. Nows your chance to catch that shrew. Then, we can move to a differnet spot to try and catch more." Berrystike meows to Lionpaw.
"Okay!" Lionpaw quicklt gets into his best hunters crouch and creeps forward to a nearby oak tree. Below it was a large shrew, nibbling on some grass. Lionpaw quickly jumps and lands straight on top of the shrew. The shrew quickly trys to scurry away but Lionpaw bits it on the neck.
Lionpaw comes back over and droppes his shrew in front of him. "I got it, but I smelled a starling in the tree right above the shrew. May I go get it?" He asks.
"Go right ahead. I'm sure it wont hurt to catch one more thing in this area." Berrystrike mews to him.
Once again, Lionpaw gets into his hunters crouch. I hear him creep back over to the same tree and start to climb it. I finally hear the starling, moving along the lower branchs of the tree.
Lionpaw leaps up onto the same branch and quickly and swiftly bits the starlings neck. He brings it back over and drops it beside his shrew.
"Great job Lionpaw, though you didn't have to be so fast with biting it. It didn't notice you until you bit it." I meow to him.
"Yeah, thanks. Though I don't see how you even can smell that much prey." He mews back.
"When you lose one of your senses, your other senses are better than anyone elses." I meow to him, a little irritated.
"Alright. I don't think we need to move to a different spot. We can just catch prey on the way back to the clearing." Sandclaw meows, starting to walk back the way we had come from.
The rest of us follow behind him, picking up the prey before we leave. I smell another squrriel scurring right behind us.
I turn around, drop my prey and sprint towards it. I jump and land right on top of it and nip its neck like I had done with the last one.
"I caught another squrriel!" I meow back to the others once I turned around. "It was walking right behind us to this tree."
"Good job Tigerpaw! Let me carry it, you are already carring enough." Sandclaw meows to me, taking the squrriel from me. I go back to my catch and pick it up. We start walking back to the clearing.
~Time Skip~
We finally got back to the clearing. Everyone else was there with there catchs, giving them back to the person who caught it.
"I think Cheetahpaw caught more than anyone else. She caught a squrriel, and two shrews." Amberfur mews before we put our prey down, "Oh my! Who caught all that prey?!?"
"Wow! I didn't think ya'll would catch the same amount of prey as us. Mainly because we have a bigger group, but still!" Bramblefang mews.
Sandclaw drops my squrriel into my pile of prey in front of me."And I didn't expect Tigerpaw to catch two squrriels and two mice!"
"He caught the mice at the same time and caught one of the squrriels in a tree!! I wish I could do that. All I caught was a shrew and a starling." Lionpaw meows, setting down his two catchs.
"To be honest, you had a pretty good catch on the starling. It was also in a tree!" Berrystike meowed to him.
"No it wasn't. It was a messy catch. And when I jumped out of the tree, I almost lost my balance!" Lionpaw meows.
"It's okay Lionpaw! You where only just made an apprentice!" Blossomfoot meows. Walking out of a bush behind the others, and droppong a squrriel in front of Leopardpaw. "Everyone caught something at least."
"Alright! Lets head back to camp. I need to suggest tree practice to Stormstar and you guys can have first dibs on the fresh-kill pile." Sandclaw adds, "And Tigerpaw. You can come with me. Along with Lionpaw since you have hunted in a tree already."
We all pick up a piece of prey or two and start our walk back to camp. This time instead of walking, Leopardpaw rides on Blossomfoot's shoulders.
~Time Skip~
We get back to camp and drop off all out prey onto the fresh-kill pile. Everyone kinda just stares at how much was caught compared to the apprentices.
"Well. That's quite a lot of prey for such a small bunch of apprentices. It looks as if everyone caught at least 2 pieces each!" Stormstar meows, "Did all you guys do is hunt?"
"Yes. All we really did was a bit of hunting. Though not everyone caught two peices of prey. Tigerpaw happened to catch FOUR peices of prey. He's already a better hunter than I am!" Sandclaw meows, praising me in front of the whole clan. "I also have something else to talk to you about. Firestorm can come also since this is about Lionpaw and Tigerpaw."
"Alright. Firestorm! Come with us to my den." Stormstar calls to Firestorm. "Come on. Lets go."
We walk over to High Ledge which is where Stormstar's den is loacated.
"Here Tigerpaw. Let me help you up High Ledge." My father, Firestorm, mews to me.
"I can do it by my self Firestorm!" I meow, now fully irritated.
"Are you sure?" He meows back
"Firestorm. Come walk by me. Watch how confident Tigerpaw's steps are." Sandclaw meows to him.
Firestorm hesitates before he leaves my side. When he does it is my turn to go up the High Ledge. I can sense Firestorm's gaze hard on me. I feel around with my paw to determine the distance then I walk up the High Ledge with no problem.
"I-I uh. Okay then." Firestorm mews following me up.
At last, everyone is in Stormstar's den.
"So, what is it you need to tell me and Firestorm about?" Stormstar asks
"It's about hunting and battle training. I was thinking we could start trying to do it in the trees. Lionpaw and Tigerpaw both successfully made a catch in the trees." Sandclaw meows to Firestorm and Stormstar. "I thought it would be a great idea to try."
"That is actually a very good idea. Tigerpaw and Lionpaw can show me and Firestorm tomorrow after they explore the territory and do a bit of battle training. Then I will decide if we should add that kind of training to be a regular thing the apprentices and warriors have to learn." Stormstar meows. "What do you think about that Firestorm?"
"I think that's a great idea. I can't wait for tomorrow now!" Firestorm mews, standing up. "Now you two. Go get some mouse bile from Dawnpelt and take care of the elders ticks."
"Aw man! I was hoping I could go practice my hunters crouch!" Lionpaw complains while walking out of the den.
We walk across the clearing to the medicine den to find Dawnpelt taking care of Whitestream.
"There we go Whitestream. Now be careful where you tred. We don't need anymore infected wounds after last Leaf-Bare." I hear Dawnpelt turn towards the entrence. She finally notices us. "Oh! Hello boys. How can I help you two. Do you need some mouse bile?"
"Yes. Firestorm wants us to take care of the elders ticks." I meow to her.
"Okay. Let me go get some. I should have some right back here." Dawnpelt meows, reaching into a crevice in the wall and pulling out a bit of mouse bile. "There you two go. Now be sure to go wash your paws in the pond close by camp after you finish. If you lick it, you'll have the taste in your mouth for days."
"Okay! Thanks!" Lionpaw meows.
We walk out of the medicine den and go to the den right next to it. This den is the elders den.
"Well hello you two! How was your first day out of camp?" Brightshadow meows as soon as we walk in.
"It was great! I had so much fun catching that starling!" Lionpaw meows moving over to Brightshadow with the mouse bile.
"I suppose you two have come to take care of our ticks. I have one right on my shoulder just out of my reach if you could get it please." Cloudleg meows as I walk over.
"Yes, we are here for your ticks. Firestorm told us to. Also, let me get that tick for you." I meow, dabbing the tick with the bile. I hear it fall onto the ground. "There you go."
"Thank you. I don't have any more, so you can go help your brother with Brightshadow if she still has any." Cloudleg meows, laughing.
"Now I only had two mister. And Lionpaw easily got them for me." Brightshadow meows to her mate. "Don't go telling the little ones that I have a tick infestation because I don't."
"Alright you two. You can go now. And Brightshadow. I was joking around with you." Cloudleg meows, still laughing a little.
We leave the den and carry the mouse bile out of camp, and walk to the pond. We dip our paws into the water and go back to camp.
"Hey Tigerpaw! Hows training going?" Silverclaw calls to me. She had just been made a warrior along with her sister Silentfrost.
"Hey Silverclaw! Trainings going great. Did you hear I caught four peices of pery today?" I mew, a little excited.
Silverclaw roles her eyes, "Of course I did. The whole Clan knows. I'm very proud of you." She walks over and nuzzles me.
I feel my skin grow hot. "T-thank you" I mew.
"Now, would you like to go eat some fresh-kill with me?" She ask, I hear her walking over to the fresh-kill pile.
"Sure. I'd love to." I meow, following behind her.
She grabs a squrriel I had caught and I grab the starling Lionpaw caught. We eat next to each other, our fur brushing together. When we have finished eating, we share tounges for a while then part ways.
I walk over to the apprentices den and find a nest between Lionpaw and Cheetahpaw. Spottedpaw was on the other side of Lionpaw and Leopardpaw was on the other side of Cheetahpaw.
I close my eyes and wait for sleep to come. A few moments later, I finally driff off into sleep.
