Chapter 4

Glaregaze paced outside the medicine den with Poppystream wrapping her  tail around Featherkit and Frostkit. The Clan was quiet as they glanced at the den, hoping Snowkit was okay after what she had gone through. Halfmoon told Poppystream and Glaregaze that the little kit was in shock and just needed to relax to be able to breathe. Wolfpaw watched the medicine den, praying to StarClan that it wasn't the kits time. She needed to live and become a warrior with her siblings.

Poundpaw looked down at the half finished thrush he had gotten for Snowkit. He had hunted for it the most and the kit he got it for wasn't breathing and in shock. Meadowpaw, Bellowvoice, and Lambpelt were trying to make the apprentice feel better, but his amber eyes just looked on sadly.

"How about you give it to Sunnigpelt?" Lambpelt suggested. "She'll be hungry after this ordeal."

"But, I caught it just for Snowkit..." Poundpaw lowered his head.

"We know, son," Bellowvoice put his tail on his son's shoulder, "but, Snowkit is having some problems right now and I don't think she'll be too hungry after what had happened..."

"She's going to be fine," Wolfpaw turned and saw Lightpelt walk out and stop Glaregaze as he paced by. "She just needs a little rest before she can leave."

"She's not going to die?" Featherkit asked worryingly.

"No, little one, she'll live." Lightpelt assured.

Glaregaze and Poppystream ran in to the medicine den with Featherkit and Frostkit. Poundpaw picked the thrush up and ran in after them. Wolfpaw could hear breathing return to Clan as the camp was filled with voices again. He went to the medicine den entrance and looked in to see Snowkit sleeping soundly in a bed of moss. Poppystream had wrapped herself around the ginger kit and licked Featherkit and Frostkit on the head.

"Why don't you two play outside," Poppystream whispered, "the hawk will be really good prey for you."

Featherkit and Frostkit looked at one another before walking out the den with tails dragging. Wolfpaw watched them go with lowers ears, knowing what it was like to worry about a sibling. He wondered if Foxkit had seen him and Glaregaze take down the hawk with Hazelnose. They'd be so proud of him.

"Wolfpaw," The silver apprentice turned to Sparrowwing and Bramblestripe, who were standing behind him, "we were about to go on a border patrol, want to join us?"

"Okay!" Wolfpaw perked up and followed his Clanmates out the gorse tunnel. They went to WindClan first and made their way to ShadowClan. Wolfpaw felt unsure of something in the air. He looked around and opened his mouth to scent the air, but he couldn't place the smell. Sparrowwing and Bramblestripe didn't seem to notice the smell. Was it just Wolfpaw?

Suddenly, a huge beast appeared from the bushes. It looked like a dog, only this one looked tougher. Was this a wolf Wolfpaw's heard so much about. Sparrowwing and Bramblestripe snarled at the wolf and unsheathed their claws. The wolf didn't react. It just looked down at Wolfpaw with hard eyes.

"Do not fear little ones," Wolfpaw thought he was the only one who heard the wolf speak, but he looked to see that Sparrowwing and Bramblestripe's eyes widen and jaws drop. "I bring no ill will, I am here to see Wolfpaw."

Wolfpaw shook at the thought of a wolf coming here to see him. Sparrowwing and Bramblestripe looked at him with their eyes still wide and fearful.

"What do you want me for?" Wolfpaw asked, trying to hide his fear.

"I've come to help you train for your leadership," the wolf answered, "I am Dawn, I help with understanding, your many skills, and how being the future leader will work for you."

"What about StarClan?" Wolfpaw asked.

"They help you understand the signs a and fight, I help you with all the other Clans." Dawn explained.

"This is crazy!" Bramblestripe hissed. "He's still so young, why does everyone want him to train so hard?"

"There are things to come that'll force Wolfpaw to make decisions by himself, we're just trying to make him know how to make the right decisions." Dawn responded.

Wolfpaw then felt a gentle breeze go through his fur. The many smells of cats filled his senses. The pain past leaders had felt, the journeys they endured, the loss they saw, and the heart ach they witnessed. Images of Clans fighting, working together, and being chased away. Wolfpaw had heard stories of SkyClan being chased out of the Clans in a different place that the Clans lived. They returned when their territory was being taken by Twolegs. He remembered Sunnigpelt and Earthdirt telling him about the forest. The Clans had to leave when Twolegs were destroying their home. The pain of the elders who had lived their whole lives and leaving it. The warmth of two elders still clung to the air as Twolegs forced their monsters through the territory.

"I will wait three days for your response," Dawn intrrupted Wolfpaw's thoughts of the distant past, "I'll be in the tunnels awaiting your answer." she ran off, leaving the three cats where they stood.

"Whatever choice you make," Sparrowwing began, facing the silver apprentice, "we'll be with you every step of the way."

Bramblestripe nodded in agreement and followed the she-cat away. Wolfpaw looked up at the sky and wondered if StarClan sent the cat speaking wolf, or a different kind of ancestor sent her.
