Chapter 13
Wolfpaw paced impatiently just outside where the Moonpool awaited. He was able to get out of camp by telling Adderstar and Glaregaze he wanted to train and help rebuild the camp, even if it costed his sleep. Glaregaze agreed to let Wolfpaw work until he decided when his apprentice should stop. If Wolfpaw knew anything, Glaregaze was going to be forced to order Wolfpaw to the apprentice's den by Poppystream.
Bramblestripe was guarding the camp while Sparrowwing and Hazeleyes were out getting more twigs and feathers for the dens. They wished him luck as he passed by. When he did, he noticed Sparrowwing looked tired and she seemed to be hiding a few scratches. She seemed to working just as hard as he could.
Wolfpaw seemed to have been waiting a whole moon when he finally heard the voices of the others. Bravepaw stepped in first, followed by Acepaw, Snarlpaw, Silverpaw, and Harmonypaw.
"Sorry, Wolfpaw," Acepaw ran up ahead, "Moortail was keeping me busy with moss finding."
"Let's get this over with," Bravepaw went ahead, "I don't have all night."
Wolfpaw suppressed an irritated growl as he followed the tabby tom. Silverpaw pushed between him and Acepaw to press herself close to Wolfpaw's side. The silver tom just lowered his head and tried his best to ignore her. He looked back to see Harmonypaw immediately lower her gaze.
Why does StarClan have to make things so difficult? Wolfpaw thought with a sigh. She-cats...
They climbed down the steep slope until they reached the star sparkled pool where a waterfall streamed down in to it. Bravepaw sat proudly as everyone followed after. Wolfpaw looked at himself in the reflective pool. The him looking back was covered in stars and Silverpelt seemed to shine through him.
They lowered their heads and touched their noses to the chilling water.
When Wolfpaw opened his eyes, he was in StarClan's hunting grounds. Acepaw, Harmonypaw, and Snarlpaw were by his side as he looked around.
"Where's Bravepaw and Silverpaw?" Wolfpaw asked.
Harmonypaw looked around frantically. Her eyes were wide as she tried searching for her sister.
"Wolfpaw," a stern voice made Wolfpaw flinch before turning to see Dragonwing glare down at them, "what are these three doing here with you?"
"I'm sorry, Dragonwing," Wolfpaw bowed his head, "but, they're the best apprentices in their Clans, they should receive the same training as me and become leaders too!"
"That one is a medicine cat!" Dragonwing pointed at Harmonypaw with his tail.
"My sister, Silverpaw, was with me," Harmonypaw explained herself, "but, I don't know where she went."
Dragonwing bared his teeth at hearing Silverpaw's name. Was there a reason she wasn't here with them? And what about Bravepaw?
"You're Dragonwing?" Snarlpaw's eyes shone as he stepped up the the ShadowClan warrior.
"So you've heard of me?" Dragonwing looked down the sandy tom.
"Heard of you?" Snarlpaw purred. "You're a legend in ShadowClan!"
"Dragonwing," Foxtail walked up, his ginger fur glowing with stars, "this may be a good idea, we do want Wolfpaw to have alliances outside his Clan for the prophecy."
"I suppose..." Dragonwing meowed. "Acepaw, Larkfeather will be a good mentor for you, she's usually chasing rabbits on the moor."
The dark gray tabby shot off happily to search for Larkfeather. Dragonwing flicked his tail for Snarlpaw to follow him and they both ran off.
"I'm going to see if I can find Willowshine and Mothwing." Harmonypaw purred, beginning to walk away.
"Wait," Wolfpaw followed after for a moment, "do... You need... Help?"
"If you're asking if I can see," Harmonypaw purred, "yes, I can, whenever I'm in StarClan I have sight."
"Come on Wolfpaw!" Foxtail called. "The night won't last forever!"
With his fur hot with embarrassment, Wolfpaw nodded goodbye to Harmonypaw before quickly following after Foxtail.
Wolfpaw fell down exhausted from climbing trees, chasing prey, and learning every cat by name, scent, and past. Amberheart even taught him to help kittypets in need. Ivypool also taught him how he could enter StarClan wherever he was, which Wolfpaw found much more useful than anything StarClan was teaching him.
"We have one last thing for you," Lionblaze told the silver apprentice as he began to make his way to where he had woken up.
Acepaw, Snarlpaw, and Harmonypaw returned, along with cats Wolfpaw didn't know.
"We want you three apprentices to race," a WindClan ancient spoke near Acepaw, "it's just to see how well you're training at the lake has been going, stronger legs make stronger leaders."
Dragonwing rolled his eyes at the WindClan cats pride. Snarlpaw didn't ask questions and ran over to a starting point.
"First one back, wins," Wolfcry purred, "to the stream and back."
Wolfpaw nodded and joined Snarlpaw with Acepaw.
"Hey, Harmonypaw!" Wolfpaw called back. "Want to join?"
Harmonypaw just shook her head and sat down with the RiverClan cats.
"Ready?" Hollyleaf raised her tail. "Set. Go!" she yowled flicking her tail.
The three toms shot off and tried their best to surpass one another. Acepaw, of course, was running ahead of them, being a WindClan cat. Snarlpaw was trying harder than either apprentice. He was shorter than the others. Even smaller than Wolfpaw. Mimi must have really treated him like a kittypet kit. How had Sharpfang been treating him in training, Wolfpaw wondered.
Wolfpaw almost didn't notice Acepaw not see the big rock in his path. The WindClan tom tripped over and rolled, stopping on his belly panting. Wolfpaw slowed his place and spun around to go help. Snarlpaw ran ahead, leaving both of them.
"Come on, Acepaw!" Wolfpaw prompted his friend.
"I... Can't... Run anymore..." Acepaw panted. "My... Legs are killing me!"
"Come on, you can do it! You're the fastest apprentice in WindClan!" Wolfpaw urged.
"Just... Go on... Without me..."
"Just like the son of a traitor is thought to act!" Snarlpaw's voice was heard behind Wolfpaw. "Helping a cat from a different Clan, when you should be thinking of your own!"
Wolfpaw dug his claws in to the ground, his fur rising in agrivation. Wolfpaw was no traitor just because Goosetail turned his back on the code. His anger took him by control and he couldn't stop himself from what he released from his mouth.
"Goosetail is not my father!" he shrieked.
"What's going on here?" Dragonwing hissed, stepping up on a small hump of land.
Snarlpaw drew his ears back and his eyes were wide with fear. "N-Nothing, Dragonwing!" The sandy apprentice took off quickly.
Wolfpaw growled as he watched Snarlpaw bolt off in to the distance.
"I appreciate your help, Wolfpaw," Acepaw mewed standing up, with a tired look in his eyes, "but, he's right... We should look out for our own..." With that the tabby ran off after Snarlpaw.
But, everyone needs a little help now and then from others... Wolfpaw thought sadly before running after them.
