Chapter 21

Meadowpaw climbed up a tree during her and Wolfpaw's free time. She slid down a few rabbit lengths, but quickly continued climbing up until she made it to a branch. She looked out across the lake with the sun shining on her grey tabby pelt.

"What do you see?" Wolfpaw called up.

"I see, the lake... I think I see some RiverClan cats swimming around out there," Meadowpaw called back, "ShadowClan patrols moving through the brambles in their territory... WindClan cats chasing a rabbit... And it looks like SkyClan is just relaxing in the sun."

"Do you see the Moonpool?" Wolfpaw asked, his paws ready to hear about the ancient pool.

"No... There's too many trees and I think it's in a dip." Meadowpaw called back. "Do you want to go there, I think it'd look pretty!"

Wolfpaw really wanted to go, but Glaregaze would probably claw at his ears for leaving the territory with out telling anyone.

"I don't know, Meadowpaw," Wolfpaw spoke, "we'd probably have to ask Adderstar or our mentors."

"Would you like to come with me?" Wolfpaw turned to see Halfmoon had come out from the gorse tunnel, holding a colts foot stem in her mouth. "I have a question for StarClan, but they seem to only answer me at the Moonpool."

"We really get to go to the Moonpool?" Meadowpaw exclaimed, pouncing down from the tree.

"Are you sure?" Wolfpaw asked, tilting his head and eyeing the white medicine cat. Her eyes met his with a stern glance before she nodded and went through the gorse tunnel to drop her herb off. Meadowpaw bounced around happily, mewing about going to see where ancient cats had walked. Was there a real reason as to why Halfmoon agreed to take them? What did she hope to gain? She was the medicine cat. Did she know about his destiny?

Wolfpaw followed Halfmoon with Meadowpaw close to his side. They went up the stream, separating them from WindClan and SkyClan. Wolfpaw looked to the two Clans. Did any of the cats there have destinies that surpassed their Clan? Or, ShadowClan and RiverClan? Silverpaw seemed to stick out while Wolfpaw was there, or that could've been because she scared Wolfpaw. Harmonypaw warned him she was part of his destiny and that he should be wary of her. The silver she-cat did seem to be on the friendly side for an enemy.

"How much longer until we get there?" Meadowpaw complained.

"Not much." was the only reply Halfmoon would give the young apprentice.

"You said that not much longer ago!" Meadowpaw growled.

"If you want to go back to camp and laze around with your brother, then be my guest, but Wolfpaw hasn't complained once, so he and I will go!" Halfmoon hissed, turning on her Clanmate.

"No, I'll be quite, I want to go to the Moonpool..." Meadowpaw whined, her ears back and tail dragging.

Wolfpaw put his tail on the light grey she-cat as the three continued to the ancient pool. Would Halfmoon let them speak to their ancestors? He still had so many questions for them. He also wanted to see Foxkit and Hazelnose. He also wanted to see Berrybush and apologize for getting her killed. She was going to be deputy one day.

Finally, the three ThunderClan cats came to a dip that led through to a bit of wood. They climbed down and pushed through some brush. Wolfpaw suddenly felt like cats from far before he was born surrounded him. He looked down to see paw prints, surrounding a pool of water where a waterfall flowed down in to it.

"We need to wait a little," Halfmoon spoke, "the moon needs to shine down into it for us to be able to speak to StarClan. Why don't you two get us something to eat while we wait."

Wolfpaw and Meadowpaw bolted out, back to the forest that didn't belong to any Clan. Wolfpaw ran ahead and searched for any prey scent. He spotted a vole, trying to cover itself in snow. Wolfpaw lowered down to his hunting crouch, eyeing the mouse like creature. Having silver fur came in handy on snow days. He almost looked like a shadow on snow.

Finally, Wolfpaw pushed off and pelted to the food. It was about to bolt off, but Wolfpaw was too quick for it. He snagged the vole with a claw and bit in to its neck, killing it after a moment of fighting. He'd give this to Halfmoon. She liked vole and rabbit the most. Wolfpaw couldn't understand why. He buried his catch and went on with his hunting.

After a few fox lengths of walking, Wolfpaw spotted a squirrel in a tree. He pounced up and climbed from branch to branch until he was finally at level with the delicious morsal. The squirrel was chewing on a nut and didn't seem to notice Wolfpaw behind it. He creeped closer until he pounced and grabbed the squirrel in his jaw. With his claws outstretched, Wolfpaw grabbed hold of a branch with his forpaws. He struggled for a moment before pulling himself up the branch. He jumped down to the ground and headed back for the vole.

As he made his way to the Moonpool with his catches, Wolfpaw thought he heard a noise near the stream. It hadn't frozen yet, but it was still early in leaf-bare. He ran over and saw two fish on the side. Wolfpaw tilted his head and set his prey down to see if he could smell anything besides the stinky RiverClan prey. Something about the scent was familiar. He searched his memories for the scent and recognized Harmonypaw and Silverpaw. What were they doing all the way here? The sun was setting over the trees and Wolfpaw could see stars begin to come out. Was Harmonypaw showing Silverpaw the Moonpool?

"Wolfpaw!" Wolfpaw jumped at the sudden shriek. He turned to see Silverpaw pelting over to him. "Thank StarClan, you're here! Help me! Harmonypaw is stuck in some trap!" quickly hiding his catches, Wolfpaw bolted after Silverpaw. The pushed through bracken and bramble until they came to Harmonypaw. She was in some strange wired den that had a hooked strick on what looked like the entrance.

"Silverpaw, is that you?" Harmonypaw wailed, her eyes searching blindly around.

"I'm here, I brought Wolfpaw to help!" Silverpaw responded. She ran over to the cage and started pawing at the hooked stick. Wolfpaw ran to her side and began doing the same.

You're doing it wrong. Wolfpaw heard a voice and turned to see... Wolfpaw wanted to yowl in terror at what he saw. It was a hairless pink cat with huge, bulging eyes that looked milky and hazy. This cat seemed old and somewhere far away. Push the latch off the top and door will swing open. The raspy voice from the wrinkled old cat instructed. Wolfpaw looked at the stick they were pawing at and guessed that was the latch. He bit down on the latch and began pulling up. Shakily the latch followed, making it feel like Wolfpaw was going to snap his jaw. He felt it get easier as Silverpaw joined him.

Both apprentices jumped back as the latch swung up and the door opened. Harmonypaw looked around confused for a moment and ran out. Wolfpaw then ran off with Silverpaw at his heels. He guided Harmonypaw with his tail, until they returned to the spot where Wolfpaw and Silverpaw left their prey.

"Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you!" Harmonypaw mewed, pressing the top of her head up under Wolfpaw's chin. "I was afraid I'd never get out!"

"Well, you should have been more careful!" Silverpaw snapped, yanking the medicine cat apprentice away from Wolfpaw by the tail. "For StarClan's sake, just because you're blind doesn't mean you can't figure out what's in front your nose! You still have whiskers!"

"I'm sorry..." Harmonypaw lowered her head sadly.

Before Wolfpaw could speak, he heard the thundering pawsteps of Meadowpaw, who crashed in to the clearing where they stood.

"What happened?" the light grey tabby she-cat demanded, her silver eyes full of worry. "Are you okay, Wolfpaw?" she circled the silver tom then pressed her side to his. He noticed Silverpaw's eyed grow dark and her claws digging into the ground. What did she care if Meadowpaw was mooning over Wolfpaw? They were enemies right?

"Harmonypaw got stuck in some trap so we got her out." Wolfpaw explained. He'd probably tell her and Halfmoon about the hairless cat he saw back at the trap.

"What are you two doing here?" Meadowpaw flicked her tail, eyeing the RiverClan cats.

"Silverpaw had a sign from StarClan and we wanted to see what it meant." Harmonypaw answered.

"Why didn't you bring your mentors?" Wolfpaw asked.

"They said that if it was a sign, then only I should go, Harmonypaw is just showing me to the Moonpool, Rollingrock has sick cats to tend to." Silverpaw explained. "Now what are you two doing here?" her blue eyes shot to Meadowpaw, making it seem that she was tearing Wolfpaw's companion in half.

"Halfmoon is taking us to the Moonpool so we can talk to our ancestors." Meadowpaw answered, shootig the same glare.

"Well, why don't we all go together?" Silverpaw purred, hopping over to stand next to Wolfpaw. "Harmonypaw, be a dear and get our fish." Silverpaw flicked her tail at her Clanmate and guided Wolfpaw to the Moonpool. He could feel Meadowpaw's angry stare on them as she went to retrieve their catches.

When the group of apprentices arrived, Halfmoon just shot a glare at the RiverClan cats and motioned for Wolfpaw and Meadowpaw to come stand by her.

"Just take a small drink from the water and go to sleep." Halfmoon instructed. Wolfpaw and Meadowpaw laid down and lapped at the cool water. Wolfpaw closed his eyes and let the calming sound of the waterfall lullaby him to sleep.

"Wolfpaw!" Wolfpaw awoke to see Foxkit's excited blue eyes look in to his.

"Foxkit!" Wolfpaw, jumped up and touched his nose to his sister's. "How have you been? How is Hazelnose? Is Berrybush here?"

"Relax!" Foxkit purred, batting Wolfpaw on the ear. "Come on, they're waiting for you!" The tan she-kit bolted off and Wolfpaw quickly followed after. They passed a few starry pelted cats, who nodded and greeted the silver tom.

"Hazelnose, Wolfpaw is here!" Wolfpaw slowed as he reached Foxkit, who circled their light grey tabby mother.

"Wolfpaw!" Hazelnose ran over and licked her son's head. "How us training, my brave warrior?"

Wolfpaw wasn't sure if should tell her how strict Glaregaze was. He wasn't being cruel, just training him the way he thought was right. "Great! I'm learning a lot!"

"Wolfpaw!" Wolfpaw spun around and saw Berrybush running over, her eyes shining happily.

"Berrybush..." Wolfpaw greeted the she-cat as she approached. She licked the apprentice's cheek to Wolfpaw's surprise. "Does that mean you're not mad at me?"

"Why would I be mad?" Berrybush purred in amusement. "I saved my future leader! I'm the best remembered warrior!"

Wolfpaw let out a purr, happy to hear the excited mew of his Clanmate.

"It's good to finally meet you face to face." Wolfpaw turned to see two unfamiliar she-cats coming toward him from a hill. "Now, to discuss your leadership training."
