Chapter 2
It was a moon after Foxkit passed away from kitten cough. Lambpelt had given birth to two kits, Poundkit and Meadowkit. Poundkit was a brown tom with amber eyes, which make him good at hiding and catching prey. Meadowkit was grey with light silver eyes. Wolfkit could only play with them when Lambpelt said it was okay. Or more like, whenever Bellowvoice said it was okay. The tom was nervous the older kits would crush his new borns. Goosetail never was nervous for Wolfkit. He'd never visit him or Hazelnose. He never even shared two words with his mate for all Wolfkit knew.
Adderstar was getting more and more frustrated with the warrior every time he walked out camp. Wolfkit wondered where his father would go every day. He also wondered what was outside the camp. Kits weren't allowed outside camp without a warrior. But Goosetail was running off on his own so much, Wolfkit was getting suspicious.
"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey, gather beneath the high ledge!" Adderstar called out to the Clan. Willowsigh got up and lead Sparrowkit and Hazelkit out the nursery. Hazelnose got up and Wolfkit followed her. He looked around to see the whole Clan gather around where Adderstar stood on a high ledge, overlooking the cats around him. Willowsigh groomed Sparrowkit and Hazelkit roughly until they batted her away with their paws. Their father, Dustytail, was looking at them proudly as they sat down and listened.
"Sparrowkit, you have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed," Adderstar began, Wolfkit quickly looked from Adderstar to Sparrowkit who stepped up proudly. "From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Sparrowpaw. Your mentor will be Stripeclaw. I hope Stripeclaw will pass down all he knows on to you."
The golden warrior stepped up and went to stand before the new apprentice. "Stripeclaw, you are ready to take on an apprentice. You had received excellent training from Squirreltail, and you have shown yourself to be quick and persistent. You will be the mentor of Sparrowpaw, and I expect you to pass on all you know to Sparrowpaw." Stripeclaw lowered his head and touched his nose to Sparrowpaw's. The two then went to stand on the side as Hazelkit's turn came up.
"Hazelkit, you have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Hazelpaw. Your mentor will be Poppystream. I hope Poppystream will pass down all she knows on to you." Adderstar repeated the ceremony. The ginger warrior, Poppystream, stepped up and stood before Hazelpaw.
"Poppystream, you are ready to take on an apprentice. You had received excellent training from Earthfoot, and you have shown yourself to be sharp and understanding. You will be the mentor of Hazelpaw, and I expect you to pass on all you know to Hazelpaw."
Poppystream touched noses with Hazelpaw and the two went to stand next to Stripeclaw and Sparrowpaw. Adderstar jumped from the High Ledge and went to speak to some of the other warriors, probably about Goosetail, seeing as he wasn't anywhere nearby.
Poundkit and Meadowkit poked their heads out the nursery curiously, but shied back in after a stern look from Bellowvoice. Wolfkit was then lifted off his paws by Hazelnose and was brought back inside the nursery.
"What's a Gathering like?" Wolfkit asked as Hazelnose groomed herself. She was picked to go to the Gathering, leaving Lambpelt to care for Wolfkit.
"It's when all five Clans come together for one night of peace," Hazelnose answered between strokes, "it's one night where leaders and warriors from different Clans can share tongues and hear how each Clan is doing.
"Well, then why can't kits go?" Poundkit mowed.
"It may be a night of peace," Lambpelt started, "but, it's still a long trek to the Gathering and it will go way past resting time."
"I can stay up all night if I wanted to!" Poundkit complained. He then let out a yawn that made Meadowkit roll her eyes. Lambpelt then moved her kits to her side and wrapped her tail around them. Hazelnose licked the top of Wolfkit's head before going out and leaving camp with the other chosen cats.
Wolfkit watched until they were gone and went to lie down in the nursery a tail length away from Lambpelt and the kits. He wrapped himself up and closed his eyes to fall fast asleep.
When Wolfkit woke up he noticed the nursery was hazy and a dust of stars surrounded him. He looked around to see Lambpelt and her kits were still fast asleep. The silver tom got up and looked out the nursery. Silverpelt looked down at him through the entrance. A scent overcame the nursery. Something Wolfkit had never smelled before. It wasn't a cat, that Wolfkit knew. He turned to see a huge beast with tiny black berry like eyes. It's fur was black with a streak of white on top its head to the back. Wolfkit bristled at the realization of what it was. Hazelnose had told him what it was. A badger! A badger had found its way in to the nursery!
When Wolfkit was about to yowl and get help, his eyes widened and his jaw dropped. "Do not fear, tiny cat." the badger was talking! Wolfkit could understand the enemy to cats. "I not hurt you, very important kit, StarClan need you, I come to grant wish."
"Wish?" Wolfkit couldn't believe he just spoke back to the badger. "What wish?"
"To see outside camp and to go to Gathering." The badger answered. Wolfkit's heart beat skipped. He had to be dreaming. Lambpelt was still asleep, as well as the kits.
"Why am I important?" Wolfkit tilted his head. "I'm just a kit of two warriors."
"You parents may be average day cats, but you special," the badger began to explain, "prophecy hangs on your head, made the night you born."
"Prophecy?" Wolfkit tilted his head.
"On the night of a fallen warrior, a hero will be born... And the wolf will run with the stars..." multiple distant voices began whispering in his ear. Wolfkit spun around the nursery, still hearing the voices.
"But what does that even mean?" Wolfkit pressed.
"It mean you have prophecy that foresees you as future leader." Wolfkit thought he didn't hear right. Him a leader? He was just a kit who wanted to be a warrior. He was taking kitten steps, this was a huge leadership step! "No fear, you have long time before have to worry, but I come to show you what leader does at Gathering and what you do as apprentice there, mentor not have to tell you twice, come." the badger began walking out the nursery. Wolfkit looked back at Lambpelt before following the starry badger.
Wolfkit was out of breath as they passed a farm, the badger said it would be a place he'd have to visit to help a fellow Clan cat. He could smell cats were inside the huge den called a barn.
They came to a fallen tree that lied between the land Wolfkit and the badger stood on and an island on the other side. Wolfkit turned when the stinky scent of fish filled his mouth. He cringed at the horrible scent.
"Over there is RiverClan territory," the badger explained, "they mostly only eat fish." she clamped her jaws on Wolfkit's scruff and climbed on the tree. She carried him across the tree until they got to the island. The badger set Wolfkit down and began walking again, Wolfkit following. They stopped by a couple of bushes and the badger moved some of the burr down for Wolfkit to look over and see a whole clearing full of cats, all with different scents.
Adderstar sat on a huge tree with four other cats. Twitchwhisker, the deputy, sat on the roots of the tree with four other cats. He looked to see Sparrowpaw, Hazelpaw, Bramblepaw, and Berrypaw sitting with other apprentices from the different Clans. Hazelnose was sitting with some she-cats, Wolfkit guessed were queens. Halfmoon and Lightpaw sat with some cats that were probably medicine cats and medicine cat apprentices. Warriors sat almost everywhere around the clearing.
The leaders were boasting about how well prey was in their territory, kits being born, new apprentices, and new warriors. Brackenfoot, Caverock, and Littlestone stood up proudly when they were announced as new warriors.
Looking around, Wolfkit spotted a black she-cat with dark green eyes. She was covered in scars and she seemed distant. Somewhere far away. She was seperated from the other warriors and only sat next to a medicine cat. An image of a kit a few moons older than Wolfkit appeared in his mind.
"Another cat you will help one day," the badger explained to Wolfkit, making the image vanish from his head. "Come, Gathering coming to end, must return to nursery."
They trekked back to the nursery, where Lambpelt, Poundkit, and Meadowkit were still sleeping. Wolfkit went inside and lied down, wrapping his tail around himself. The badger began walking away, but Wolfkit had one more question to ask. He went to the entrance and called out to the vanishing badger. "What's your name?"
"Name Midnight." and she was gone.
When Wolfkit woke up, he felt exhausted. His paws aching and legs shaking as he stood up. Confused, Wolfkit remembered his dream about Midnight. It was just a dream right? Wolfkit asked himself. But it felt like he had traveled for seasons around the entire world.
He looked around and saw Hazelnose fast asleep near him. He could hear playful squealing from from Poundkit and Meadowkit just outside the nursery. Wolfkit poked his head out the nursery to see Bellowvoice playing with his kits while Lambpelt ate a mouse.
Suddenly, Wolfkit's eyes flashed over to the camp entrance. Goosetail's scent came from there and no other cat's. Looking back, Wolfkit saw Hazelnose was still asleep. He quickly snuck out the nursery and made his way out the camp.
Wolfkit followed his father's scent through the forest. He also looked around to make sure no cat was following him. The place seemed quiet. The scent lead Wolfkit to a stream where Goosetail was sitting and looking across the stream to a different Clan's territory. Wolfkit stayed hidden as he watched his father. The sandy and white tom swished his tail as a black and white she-cat appeared from the moor. She ran down the slope and hopped over the stepping stones. At first Wolfkit thought they were going to fight, but his whole world seemed to crumble underneath his paws as the two touched noses and pressed against each other.
Wolfkit couldn't believe what he was seeing. Goosetail had a relationship with a different Clan she-cat!
