Chapter 8

Cinderkit's POV:

"Gather around." NoName's surprisingly squeaky voice echoed around the meeting clearing. Cinderkit ducked further into the bushes that lay in the outside of the clearing.

Her heart raced. What the little she kit was doing could get her or her mother punished, but she had overheard one of the Dark Forest warriors talking about this meeting. It was about the medicine cats!

The fighting and hunting aspect of growing up made her sick. Cinderkit didn't want her destiny secured by her parents and everyone else around her. She wanted to be free to be who she wanted to be. A medicine cat. She had heard stories from Bluesnow and Flowerstream about the medicine cats, how they helped their Clan mates, how they healed them. And their spiritual connection with StarClan.. Cinderkit shivered just at the thought of dreaming of her ancestors. Oh, how she longed to be a medicine cat.

Seeing Marigoldfur, Shinewing and Wrenpaw assisting in Bluesnow's kitting had sealed her dream to be a medicine cat. Cinderkit knew clearly her passions. I will be a medicine cat! All she had to do was find someone to mentor her... Before all the medicine cats were killed by NoName.

The grey she cat glanced up at NoName. The meeting had already started without her. Cinderkit huffed, but strained her ears to listen.

"I've decided that Shinewing and Wrenpaw will be given partial freedom. They can move into the medicine den, but must have constant supervision." The red she cat was saying. "Having them in their den will make it easier for them to heal us and give them more use."

"While they're sitting in the prison, all they are doing is wasting their unique skills." Dime added from his spot just behind NoName. "With this new change, we can use their healing more effectively."

Shinewing and Wrenpaw were sitting under the rock, completely silent. Their heads hung low and their ears drooping. They didn't seem happy about the new move, or maybe they were trying to keep a low profile while in the presence of so many of their enemies?

As the meeting drew to a close, Cinderkit made her escape. She scrambled through the bushes and made a dash for the nursery cave. The grey kit tumbled down the tunnel, nearly crashing straight into Flowerstream's nest. Luckily it was nap time, so everyone was asleep... Except for Blossomfur.

Her mother gave her a stern glare as she climbed into the nest. "And where have you been?" The cream furred she cat queried.

"Uh," Cinderkit murmured, "I sorta happened to overhear that the medicine cats are being moved into the medicine den.. And.."

"You want to join them?" Blossomfur guessed with a sigh.

Cinderkit nodded in silence, begging that her mother allowed her to try and become a medicine cat.

To her dismay, Blossomfur simply shook her head and turned away to rest. "No. I won't have a weakling as a kit. You will be a warrior, and if you refuse I'll have NoName punish you."

Cinderkit gaped at her mother in shock, her eyes growing watery as she squeaked in fright. "W-what?"

"You heard me."

The grey she kit stumbled out of the nest, whimpering. How could her mother threaten her like that? Fear sent her body into a panic, trembles running through her body. If it wasn't for Bluesnow coming to the rescue and bringing her into her nest, Cinderkit would've gone into shock.

Safe in Bluesnow's foreign, but comforting embrace, Cinderkit began to devise a plan...

The faint light of early dawn shone through the nursery tunnel. Cinderkit looked around the dark den, everyone was still asleep. This was her chance, she had to go now before anyone else woke up. No one was going to tell her she couldn't do something, even her mother couldn't control her.

Cinderkit slid silently out of Bluesnow's nest, making sure she didn't touch her sleeping kits on her way out. Once she was on the soft, mossy floor, the grey she kit snuck through the den, quiet as a mouse. She made it to the tunnel without so much as a breath to heavy. No one stirred as she turned to give the den a final sweep with her pale green eyes. I did it! A sense of accomplishment blossomed within the little kit and she grinned before turning around and darting up the tunnel.

The cool morning air hit her as she emerged into the clearing. A few cats were lazing around camp, but they took no notice to the small kit making her way across the edge of the bushes to get to the medicine den. However, much to Cinderkit's dismay, she was stopped in her tracks when she nearly crashed into Shadeheart, who was sittinf guard at the den. Her father let out a soft grunt in surprise, looking down at her.

"What are you doing up?" The black tom asked with a shake of his head.

Cinderkit felt her heart drop to the pit of her stomach. Was it over? Would her father take her back to the nursery? "I-I.." She stammered, her grey fur bristling. "I just wanted to.. t-to visit the medicine cats.." She pleaded internally for Shadeheart to let her go in, but she knew he would say no.

Her father blinked in mild surprise, his golden eyes giving her a strange warm feeling as she looked up at them. "You want to go inside? Why?" His voice held simple curiosity, and it was shockingly gentle. None of Blossomfur's former aggression could be seen in her father. A spark of hope formed within Cinderkit.

Her voice was stronger this time, confidence rushing through her tiny body. "I want to be a medicine cat." She meowed, her neck straining to stare up at her father's eyes. She waited for his reaction tensely.

Shadeheart's head tilted to the side. "A medicine cat, huh? What makes you think that?" Again, his voice was calm and relaxed. All he held was a genuine curiosity.

Cinderkit's body trembled with excitement. "Being a medicine just seems so.. amazing!" She squeaked, no longer worried about keeping her voice down. She let her passion run free. "They are the bridge between the Clans and their ancestors! They heal their Clanmates, and keep everyone together. They get to interpret omens and.. and.." She stuttered, feeling at a loss for words. "I really want to be there to help my fellow Clan members.. I have no interest in spilling blood, but instead, saving it."

A faint smile rose on Shadeheart's face and he stood to the side, revealing the den entrance to Cinderkit. "I'll see what I can arrange with NoName then."

"Really?!" Cinderkit gasped. "Thank you!" She hugged his foreleg, purring with delight. "Thank you father! I love you!"

His warm tongue rasped over her head. "I love you too." He murmured. "Now go meet the medicine cats. I'm sure they'll be happy to get to know you."
