Chapter 17
Two moons had passed, and so had leaf-bare. The sun shone brightly in the blue sky, and Sharppaw had just returned from a hunting and fighting session. He'd fought with Lightpaw, and had won. He'd also caught more prey than his brother.
Sharppaw dropped his squirrel, sparrow, and shrew on the prey pile, feeling hungry himself. But first he would make sure the elders had been fed. Picking up a fat pigeon and a mouse, he headed across the camp towards the elders' den.
Flower and Thorn were chatting together, while Graystripe, Ferncloud, and Poppyfrost were sharing tongues together.
Sharppaw dropped the fat pigeon at Graystripe's paws. "Here. Share it with Ferncloud and Poppyfrost. You must be hungry," he meowed.
"Thanks, Sharppaw! I was starting to think we'd never get food!" Graystripe purred.
Sharppaw turned and gave Flower and Thorn the mouse. Thorn blinked gratefully at him with his one eye.
"Thank you, Sharppaw. I'm actually glad I joined ThunderClan instead of being with the rogues," Thorn meowed.
Sharppaw blinked warmly at him. Flicking his tail, he turned. Most of the warriors around the camp were eating prey, so Sharppaw headed to the pile and grabbed two mice.
Stormpaw padded into camp, Berrynose, Blossomfall, and Mossheart with her. Stormpaw was carrying a fat vole and a small blackbird. She trotted over to the fresh-kill pile, dropping her prey. She spotted Sharppaw and padded over to him, her gaze warm. "Hi, Sharppaw!"
Sharppaw dropped his mice on the ground and leaned forward to lick Stormpaw's muzzle. "Are you hungry?" He asked.
"Yes," Stormpaw meowed, purring. She followed Sharppaw as they headed into a corner of the camp with the two mice. Sharppaw crouched down and took a bite of his mouse.
Stormpaw looked as though something were on her mind.
"Something wrong?" Sharppaw asked.
"I had a strange dream last night. Some StarClan cat came to me. He said his name was Ashstar and told me that I needed to find the last remaining of the storm," Stormpaw meowed. "Well, whatever that means."
Sharppaw stared at her, his heart starting to pound. Had she possibly received a prophecy? He flicked his tail. "Lets just eat," he meowed.
Sharppaw padded with Stormpaw and Stalkpaw through the forest, hearing the quiet gurgle of the stream close by. They'd been padding through the forest for a long time and then they'd smelled rogue scent and followed it. It must've been past the stream, leading to the gathering place.
Stalkpaw flicked his tail. "Why do the rogues have to be so much trouble," he growled. His neck fur was bristling.
"Good question," Stormpaw sighed. "They should know by now that if we found them on our territory, we'd kick their tails over the border," she pointed out.
Sharppaw brushed against her, his whiskers twitching. "Maybe they enjoy annoying us." But I do know that Frostpaw, Falconflight, and Snowbreeze enjoy annoying me.
The three cats leaped over the stream and peered through the tough reeds, keeping low.
A dark blueish-black she-cat with yellow eyes was with Nettle and Rain.
"We can make our territory here. Our camp can be here from now on," Rain meowed, his whiskers twitching. He looked at the mysterious she-cat. "Good thinking, Ninx. How did you know about this place?"
"I saw the Clan cats come here every full moon. They'll never know that we're here. Next full moon, we can ambush them here. We might be able to outnumber them. After all, they only bring a few of their cats with them," she meowed, her yellow eyes shining.
"This is good," Rain meowed smoothly. "Darktail will be pleased."
"Yes, and they will pay for killing Arbonx. I'm still expecting his kits, and they'll have to grow up without a father," Ninx meowed, her tail drooping.
"Don't worry, Ninx. We'll make them pay," Rain growled.
"We should go back to Darktail now," Nettle meowed. He flicked his tail.
Stalkpaw growled. "We should warn them off our territory," he insisted.
"We can't fight fully grown rogues!" Stormpaw gasped.
"We can if we try," Sharppaw pointed out, flicking his tail.
The undergrowth on the right rustled. A sleek white she-cat padded out, her blue eyes shimmering with menace.
Sharppaw bristled. "Ugh, it's that arrogant Frostpaw!" He hissed.
"Frostheart. Good to see you," Nettle greeted warmly.
Sharppaw lashed his tail. Had she given herself a warrior name already?
Frostheart ignored the tom. She glared at Ninx. "Have you done anything useful for once?" She hissed.
Sharppaw sighed inwardly. And she's still got the same attitude...
Ninx glared back at her. "Of course I have. I have a plan," she meowed.
"But we should go back to Darktail," Nettle mewed, padding over to them.
"Huh, you can warn him, and we'll stay here," Frostheart growled. She parted her jaws, bristling. "The smell of ThunderClan is unusually strong," she murmured.
"Or maybe that's just you," Ninx hissed.
Frostheart suddenly lashed out, her claws catching Ninx on the cheek. Blood spattered the ground.
"You piece of dirt!" Ninx hissed. She reared on her paws, swiping at Frostheart. She caught her muzzle and lashed at her cheek.
"Stop fighting like kits!" Rain yowled, slashing at Frostheart's ear. The white she-cat staggered backwards.
"It's honestly unbelievable how you two act!" Rain sighed, lashing his tail. "Frostheart, stay with Nettle and guard this spot while I report to Darktail," he ordered. Ninx padded up to him and the two rogues left, their tails flicking.
Sharppaw turned to Stormpaw and Stalkpaw. "We should attack them now. We outnumber them."
"But even though we outnumber them, they might outskill us," Stalkpaw pointed out. "We event even completed our warrior training yet."
"It would be risky to attack them now," Stormpaw protested, flattening her ears.
"But this is the gathering place! This isn't rogue territory!" Sharppaw hissed. He got to his paws, unsheathing his claws and darting from the undergrowth.
"Sharppaw! Come back, mouse-brain!" Stalkpaw yowled in terror.
"Sharppaw? What a surprise to see you here!" Frostheart growled, rising to her paws. She peered past him as Stormpaw and Stalkpaw crept from the undergrowth. "Oh and you've brought your friends here too! You can't even fight me alone, coward," she hissed.
Stormpaw bristled. "Sharppaw is not a coward!" She growled defensively.
"At least he has more loyalty than you'll ever have," Stalkpaw hissed.
"Oh stop all that nonsense talk," Frostheart retorted. She lashed her tail, looking at Nettle. "We can fight these weak cats."
Nettle padded forward, unsheathing his claws.
Sharppaw yowled and was about to leap on Frostheart, but the undergrowth behind him rustled. His heart froze. Were more rogues coming?
Bramblehawk and Lightpaw padded from the bushes.
"What's happening?" Bramblehawk asked, narrowing his eyes. The brown tabby senior warrior looked at the rogues.
"The rogues were on this territory," Sharppaw hissed. "I was about to attack when suddenly you two showed up."
Bramblehawk bristled, unsheathing his claws. "Well? Do you two need a fight to prove who's stronger, or will you leave now?"
Frostheart curled her tail in annoyance. "Fine," she growled. She surprisingly left with Nettle without another word.
"Who's the coward now?" Sharppaw mocked, satisfaction scorching through him.
"Sharppaw, that's enough," Bramblehawk meowed. "We best get off this territory." As the five cats padded from the territory, Lightpaw blinked sadly at Sharppaw.
"Frostpaw is one of them now," he muttered.
"Well thank StarClan she is," Sharppaw growled. "She doesn't even feel like a sister anymore, and she's already given herself a warrior name: Frostheart."
"She's still a sister to me," Lightpaw whispered. "Even if she isn't to you."
Sharppaw ignored his brother. He hunched his shoulders, feeling more empty inside.
"We were coming to look for you, Sharppaw. Ambertuft needed to see you," Bramblehawk meowed. Turning a warm gaze on him, he added, "It's something important."
