Chapter 17

Shadekit's POV:

"W-who are you?" Shadekit squeaked as a light ginger she cat approached from the Starclan mist.

"Shh, it's okay little one." She meowed, stopping a tail-length away from him. "My name is Spark."

"What are you doing here?" Shadekit asked, staring up at her.

"I'm here to tell you something." She smiled reassuringly.

It had only been a few moments since the white and green she cat had disappeared. The ginger she cat's appearance had been almost immediate.

"What are you going to tell me?" Shadekit asked, staring up at the she cat.

"You know the shadows, yes?"

"Mumma's shadows? Yeah!" Shadekit nodded, his tail flicking in interest. He had never been able to fully understand NoName's powers, and he wanted to know more.

"Well they originated from something much better; Moon Mist." Spark meowed. "And it's now your job to convert NoName's shadows back into their true mist form."

"Convert them? But why?" He asked.

"The Shadows are evil, Moon Mist is the good and pure." Spark explained. "You will become NoName's apprentice and you will take over the Shadows, and convert them to Moon Mist."

Shadekit jolted awake in the nest, looking around to see his den mates all sleeping calmly around him. He sat up, blinking his golden eyes. Had it all been a dream? Were those cats actually real? Or were they just something his brain made up?

He felt Stormkit stir beside him and he glanced at the grey dappled tom just in time to see him roll out of the nest with a squeak. His squeak awoke Darkkit, Bluekit and Blossomkit and soon the five kits were tumbling out of the nursery and into the main clearing.

The Dark Forest guards who sat watch by the nursery had agreed not to keep stopping the kits from exiting the den, since Shadekit complained too much about it to NoName. They were allowed to roam freely around camp all day long.

Shadekit bounded up to the group of Enforcers lounging around the warrior's den, immediately pouncing on Strike's back and nibbling on his fur. "Strike!" He grinned.

"Get ooooooff!" Strike whined, rolling over so that Shadekit was squished.

"Eek!" Shadekit squirmed underneath the winged tom, slithering out from under him. "You're heavy!"

Strike patted his head with his wing. "Aw I'm not that bad."

"You actually are." Dime meowed from where he was chewing on a mouse on the other side of the Enforcers.

Strike snorted and stuck his tongue out at the dark furred tom. Tyler spoke up with a roll of his eyes. "I'm going to check on the prisoners..." The black and blue tom stood up and strolled towarda the prison, his spiked tail flicking.

Strike giggled in a kit-like manner, whispering to Shadekit. "He's going to see Silvershy to beg for her forgiveness again." The red and black tom watched his brother with a smirk. "He's tried countless times, and the only response he gets from her is silence. He's really ruined things, huh?"

Shadekit rolled his eyes. "But I think they would be cute together."

"Yeah, when will they have kits? It's about time they do." Stormkit grinned from beside him.

"Pfft, can winged cats even have kits?" Shadekit rolled his eyes for the second time, chuckling.

Strike lashed his tail. "Of course we can."

"But none of you have kits or a mate!" Bluekit batted at Strike's tail tip.

"Not many cats find us all that great, funnily enough." Strike muttered.

Flare added. "Yeah and we're not just strange winged creatures, we're also part of the Dark Forest. No one would want to be with us."

"And don't forget that NoName has Shadekit, so winged cats can definitely have kits." Zephyr spoke up, his red eyes glinting with calm amusement as he looked at Strike and Flare. The two siblings squirmed under the Promethean's glowing gaze.

Shadekit frowned at the way the Enforcers all fell into an uneasy silence at the mention of him. What's wrong? He wondered.

"Wait, NoName has wings?! Where?" Bluekit squeaked.

"She lost them." Strike replied simply, a look on his face telling them to drop it.

Mountain cleared his throat from where he was seated on the far side. "I'm going for a hunt." The grey tom rose to his paws and stalked out of camp, his tail flicking as he disappeared through the entrance tunnel.

"Always disappearing on a 'hunt.'" Strike muttered. "Every day."

"Maybe he's got a friend outside the territory. He was a filthy rogue before joining us after all." Zephyr rested his chin on his paws.

"You were too." Flare muttered back.

Zephyr glared at Flare, his deep red eyes glowing stronger. The golden she cat turned away with a low sigh.

Shadekit had made his way around the Enforcers, stopping by Zephyr's grey flicking tail. He watched it intently, wriggling his haunches as he prepared to pounce. But before he could, red mist surrounded him and he was lifted into the air.

"Don't even think about it." The grey tom growled, turning around to face Shadekit.

"Put me down!" Shadekit squeaked, batting his paws at him. Zephyr rolled his eyes and let him drop. Shadekit let out a yowl as he landed heavily on his side. "Ow!"

Immediately he was enveloped in soft, red fur and he looked up to see NoName hissing and spitting at Zephyr. "Do not touch my kit ever again!" She snarled at the grey Promethean.

Zephyr stared right back at NoName, his eyes narrowed. "You can't stop me, scrap."

"I will have you punished for this!" NoName growled back, her glowing white eyes blazing with anger. Shadekit cowered in her warm belly fur, staring wide-eyed at the confrontation.

"Your shadows are useless on me." The tom replied calmly. "And anything your warriors might try to do to me will cause me no discomfort." He stood up, glaring down at the red she cat. "I can end you and your followers' miserable lives in a heartbeat. So don't ever think you can control me. I'm only on your side for the thrill of it." Then he stalked away, into the warriors den.

Shadekit looked up to see a look of pure fear on his mother's face.
