Chapter 16

Shadekit's POV:

"We're only one moon away from our apprentice ceremony!" Shadekit grinned joyfully at his den mates, leaping out of the nest and onto the ground.

"Yeah!" Stormkit bowled into him with a high-pitched squeal. "I can't wait until we start training!"

Flowerstream looked down at the kits, sighing. "You'll have to listen to your mentors though, you know how NoName is about following rules."

Shadekit rolled his eyes. "But I'm her kit, she won't do anything to me." He looked at his den mates. "Or my friends."

"I hope that's true." Flowerstream muttered, resting her head on her paws with a yawn.

"Of course it's true." Bluekit smirked, tumbling off the nest and falling into her brother. "NoName's not that bad, really."

Flowerstream let out a gasp, her eyes widening in horror. "You don't really mean that do you?"

Bluekit blinked, her head tilting to the side as she looked at her foster mother. "Uh.. Yeah, I do..?"

"NoName is a monster!" Flowerstream hissed. "She doesn't care about anyone but herself! Do not think she will show you kindness, she takes joy in making others suffer! Have you seen the way she executes cats? Did Nutwhisker's death show you anything about what she's like?"

Shadekit blinked at the queen's fierceness towards his mother. NoName wasn't really that mean, she was only like that to the cats she didn't like... Around him she was always so nice, and so was Dime, and Strike and Tyler... Shadekit refused to believe that they all were simply cold-hearted murderers.

With a sigh, Shadekit turned to the nursey exit. "Let's go play a game." He suggested to his den mates.

"Yeah!" Stormkit bounded up the tunnel, his tail streaming behind him. Bluekit, Darkkit, Blossomkit and Shadekit trotted after the grey dappled tom with mews of excitement.

The five kits made it into the main clearing, quickly deciding which game they were going to play.

After playing almost all morning in the main clearing, Shadekit was about to fall asleep on his paws. To his relief, Flowerstream called the kits back to the den for their nap, and he gladly stumbled back into his nest with a sigh.

The other kits curled around him and he hugged them close, snuggling into their warmth. Flowerstream lay down, curling around the kits with a yawn. "Sleep well." She murmured.

Shadekit closed his golden eyes, burying his muzzle into his forepaws. Sleep took him within moments, and he found himself waking up in a dream.

Around him was a misty clearing, and sitting right before him was a white and green she cat, her golden eyes fixed on him. "Shadekit." She meowed, blinking once.

"Who are you?" Shadekit squeaked, staring up at the sparkling she cat.

"That's not important." She replied stiffly, the twinkling sound of the charms on her tail filling the empty air. "I've come here to give you a prophecy."

Shadekit pricked his ears. "A prophecy?"

She nodded. "Listen closely..."

"A kit, her soul darkened by ambition, shall rise to take over the shadows. Only shade can stop her before she destroys the dying embers of the light forever."

"...What?" Shadekit muttered.

"Be careful Shadekit." The she cat meowed, sighing as she stepped away from him, fading. "I will now leave to let you speak with someone else..."
