Chapter 6

Honeypaw blinked her eyes open, remembering the day before. She looked over to where her sister would've been lying down, and she sighed. If only I reacted fast enough.. Honeypaw thought, brushing her paws against the floor of the Apprentice's den. She peeked outside, the first light of dawn was starting to fall into the clearing, making the Big-Stone look brighter. Honeypaw watched as Scorcheye padded out of the Warrior's den, stretching and walking towards the center of the clearing to sort out patrols. He was followed by Softwing, Brightspirit, and Blackclaw. And soon all of the warriors were out in the clearing, ready for patrols. Honeypaw decided to slide out of the Apprentice's den, padding towards the Warriors. "Brightspirit, you're going to go on the Dawn patrol with Softwing, Foxpaw, and Feathersong." As Scorcheye finished, Brightspirit dipped his head, raising his tail for the patrol to follow him out of the camp. "And Dapplestrike, you're going to lead a hunting patrol with Mumblewing, Beepaw, and Honeypaw." Honeypaw immediately dashed over to her patrol, following them as Scorcheye called another patrol. Padding out into the forest, Honeypaw at once raised her muzzle and quickly scented and spotted a plump squirrel chewing on an acorn. Behind her, Dapplestrike and Beepaw walked in the other direction. Honeypaw pounced at the squirrel, killing it with a bite to the neck. But Mumblewing pushed her over and grabbed the kill, padding towards an oak tree to bury it by the roots. "Hey, that was my catch! What in the name of Starclan--?" Honeypaw was furious as she spoke, her ears flattened to her head. "You're not worthy of taking your prey to the camp." As Mumblewing replied, she didn't have the same sweet tone as she did when Honeypaw was first apprenticed. Her eyes widened with fear. Something changed her.. Oh no!

Honeypaw padded into the clearing with no prey clamped into her mouth. Each piece of prey that she had killed, Mumblewing carried them, pride in her blue eyes. As the rest of the patrol set their prey on the pile, Beepaw walked towards her. "Why didn't you catch anything, did you eat it all?" She seemed confused and curious, leaning towards Honeypaw. "Mumblewing--" Honeypaw got cut off as Duskstar called her name. "Honeypaw, may I speak with you?" Honeypaw swallowed her fear and padded towards the Big-Stone, sliding inside after Duskstar. As he lay down in his nest with Honeypaw sitting next to him, he spoke. "Is it true you didn't catch anything?" She looked down. "I.. I did, but Mumblewing... She took it all. She said I'm not worthy of taking my prey to camp." Honeypaw spoke the truth, shifting her paws on the sandy ground of the Leader's den. Duskstar seemed to process the words, then looking back down at her. "I see. Well then, if it happens again, I'll have a word with her. You may go now." Duskstar nodded. Anger was sparking off of him, being seen in his eyes. Honeypaw padded out the den, seeing as Mumblewing talked with some other warriors. They seemed impressed, and Honeypaw perked her ears to listen to what they were saying. "You must be the best hunter in the clan, Mumblewing." That was Dapplestrike, she was eating the squirrel that Honeypaw caught. "Dapplestrike is right, these are some good catches!" Blackclaw agreed, biting into another piece of prey that Honeypaw caught. She was furious, seeing as her mentor got all the credit for her prey. She wanted to yowl out. "I caught the prey! Mumblewing stole it." But she couldn't, she had no proof. Even if she did, Mumblewing would still carry all of the belief from the others. Honeypaw flattened her ears to her head, and stomped towards the Apprentice's den. I'll show them all. I'll show everyone that I caught it, and not Mumblewing!
