Chapter 10

Kraigan got a view of Berk's nightmarish creations once again when the messenger led them to the city gates of Lamitan. Another wave of regret consumed him when he saw the hellish scene outside the gates.

The outlying farms were destroyed. Berk's dark monsters were uprooting the crops and throwing them aside. The soil was soaked red with the blood of the soldiers and villagers killed by the monsters.

Alarmed by the threat, Lamitan had sealed their gates and were now defending their city against those dark creatures. The archers were shooting arrows from the walls and the soldiers were climbing down from ropes to face the monsters. However, despite there being less than twenty such monsters, the soldiers still failed to slay those monsters. Their swords and arrows seemed to have no effect on the monsters.

"You have to save us! We cannot defeat them! The king will pay you whatever sum you want," the messenger begged.

"First tell me something," Godag said, "Are there any more such creatures?"

"I told you. They are everywhere. Almost every kingdom and village faces this threat. They just appeared out of nowhere!" the messenger cried.

"We have to stop those monsters then," Lousia said.

"Shall we bring more help? We are just four," Kingston said.

"First we have to see if these monsters can be killed by us or not. We don't want another massacre like last time," Kraigan stated.

"What massacre?" the messenger asked in confusion. "Have you faced these creatures before?"

"No, but we have faced their leader," Kraigan stated.

Leaving the messenger in confusion, the Siligon Warriors charged at the monsters.

The monsters were just how Kraigan remembered them to be; with their slimy black body, rusty armor, and red eyes. They fought using their claws and teeth as sharp as a dagger.

Kraigan sprayed fire at the first monster to appear before him. The monster was busy tearing away the flesh of a soldier and didn't notice Kraigan's fire until it was too late. It shrieked in pain, stood up on its legs, and charged at Kraigan with fury. Kraigan unsheathed his sword, blazed it with fire, and attacked the monster. It took considerable slashes before a clean cut on the neck of the dark creature made it lifeless. With the first monster taken care of, he went on to fight the other monsters.

For the second time in a day, Lousia felt weak. Unlike the case with Berk, her arrows actually had an impact on Berk's army. However, while the arrows of Hawks were famous for killing people with one deathly shot, her arrows proved comparatively weak against those monsters. Lousia targeted one of the monsters, making it wince in pain with her shot. The monster got infuriated by the attack and sprinted towards Lousia. She shot arrows after arrows at the monster, slowing its pace. It took lots of arrows before the monster was finally brought down.

Kingston took full advantage of his speed to confuse the monsters; zooming past them and delivering blows before they could register what was happening.

Godag used his strength to grapple a monster with his hand and slam it to the wall. Another charged at Godag but he punched the monster hard on the nose to stun him and then finished him with a stab. After taking a moment to breathe, he studied the battlefield. Not many monsters remained.

"Kraigan! Let's end this! Do you know what to do?" Godag shouted.

"Yes! Let us do it!" Kraigan finished the monster in front of him with a fireball and then fought his way to the center of the battle taking place. He made a ring of fire around him and then retreated away to safety. Kingston brought Lousia with him, leaving Godag standing alone on the battlefield.

Godag made his way to the ring of fire at the center, taking care of anyone to come in his way. When he finally reached the place, he jumped up in the air and landed in the middle of the fire. The strength with which he slammed his sword to the ground made blue waves of energy burst out of his sword. The shockwaves traveled through the ground, mixing with Kraigan's fire and taking it with them. The result was an even deadlier shockwave which shot out a fire in all directions. The monsters instantly turned into ashes by the wave of fire.

"Whew! That's settled!" Godag took a sigh in relief.

"Thank god those monsters didn't prove half as strong as Berk," Kraigan stated.

"That was awesome! I consider it my utmost pleasure that I got to witness the Siligon Warriors in a fight! Your powers clearly prevailed over those dirty creatures!" the messenger exclaimed.

"Can you do me a favor?" Kraigan turned to the messenger.

"Of course. How can I help you?" the messenger asked.

"Go back to our camp and inform everyone to make groups and free the land from the remaining monsters," Kraigan said.

"Of course," the messenger departed.

Just a while later, the gates of Lamitan opened. Heavy shouts came from a huge army gathered on the other side.

As the four Siligon Warriors made their way past the army, the soldiers gave pats to them on their back. Some burst into a chant.

"Lord Jenefhebr of Lamitan army," a man laden in royal armour shook hands with the Siligon Warriors. "How can I thank you for your help? State whatever price you desire and I shall have it arranged."

"We did not help you for money this time," Kraigan said, "Siligon faces a great threat. We wish to have an attendance with your king."

"That can be arranged. Please wait for some time," Lord Jenefhebr said before departing.

"Come on everyone. Let's help ourselves to something," Godag walked inside a tavern, eager to get away from the attention they were surrounded by. The rest followed him.

"Four mugs of beer, please," Godag sat down on the stool in front of the counter and ordered the bartender.

"We shouldn't drink much. We have to make sure that the king takes us seriously," Kraigan said.

"Of course. But without a mug of beer, my head will never clear from all the crap going on," Godag said.

"Same here," Lousia agreed.

The bartender placed the four mugs on the counter and Godag paid him the coins. As the four drunk together, Kraigan told them about his plan.

"The king has agreed to meet you," another messenger appeared inside the tavern, interrupting the Siligon Warriors in the middle of their drink.

"Let's go," Kraigan beckoned the others.

The palace of Lamitan was truly a wonder of architecture. It displayed a wonderful pattern of red and white walls. Small pillars engraved with rubies topped the palace along with a beautiful dome in the middle.

The Siligon Warriors walked past the gardens outside the palace and across a wooden bridge before finally entering the palace.

A huge hall greeted them as soon as they walked inside. The walls were newly painted and decorated with chandeliers and portraits. At the end of the hall, King Frederick Benwell II remain seated on his throne.

This was the first time Kraigan had met the king of Lamitan. A mixture of emotions tried to bobble up on the surface of Kraigan's face but he suppressed them. The king smiled at Kraigan and the others, clearly oblivion to the suffering Kraigan had faced because of him.

"I must thank you for your help. Almost a hundred of my men lost their lives because of those strange creatures," King Frederick said.

"The threat is not over yet," Kraigan stated.

"At least Lamitan is safe. I am sure your warriors will be able to rid the other kingdoms from this threat as well," the king said.

"None of us is safe yet. This is not the end of those monsters. I have seen an army of thousands. God knows how many more are there. They can attack your kingdom again and with much more numbers next time," Godag said.

"How can you be sure?" the king asked.

"We'll tell you everything. But first, you have to promise us something in return for our help," Kraigan said.

"Of course. You name it and I shall have it arranged," the king assured.

"We want you to arrange a council between all four kings," Kraigan declared.

"A council?" the king's face went pale almost immediately. "That hasn't been held since decades. The last time it happened, someone tried to assassinate me,"

"We'll be there to make sure that no such thing happens," Lousia assured.

"In return for your help, I am bound to do it. Hence, I'll try my best to arrange it. But if the other kings don't agree, there's nothing I can do," the king of Lamitan said.

"Don't worry about it. Our warriors are currently fighting the monsters for the other kings. They'll be bound to agree to the council, just like you," Kraigan smirked.
