Part 16: Goodbye (Part 2)
"Spottedleaf!" Oceanheart heard Firestar's panicked meow a few fox-lengths from her. She looked at her mate, he was crouching beside a limp calico body that faded away, Oceanheart's heart stopped. Spottedleaf is dead as well! Firestar stood back up, fury burning in his eyes, and faced Tigerstar. Immediately remembering the prophecy Jayfeather gave him, Fire and ocean have always been rivals, but when they are needed most, they will join together to destroy the dark forces that surround them, only one survives. Firestar knew that the one who survives will be Oceanheart, and he will die. He took a deep breath and leaped at Tigerstar.
"No!" Oceanheart shrieked as the former Shadowclan leader and her mate faught. She was about to jump into the battle and help Firestar, since he was on his last life, but Sandstorm grabbed her scruff and pulled her back.
"Sandstorm! I have to help him! "She growled in protest, "I can't lose him!" The ginger she-cat looked at her, sadness in her eyes.
"You can't change his destiny, Oceanheart, none of us can." She meowed, gently. Oceanheart sighed and stayed, to watch the fight. Firestar leaped at Tigerstar once more and pinned him down. He bite down on his neck and Tigerstar yowled in pain. Within a short time of pain and agony, Tigerstar finally faded. Oceanheart couldn't believe it, Tigerstar was dead, and Firestar is still alive! The cats around her cheered and so did she. Suddenly she heard the snap of a tree, and panicked. She could see the shape of a huge oak, that caught fire, falling from its post. The tree landed and Oceanheart was knocked over by the force.
"Firestar!" She yowled. No response. Tears started to form in her eyes. No, Starclan, No! He can't be..., she frantically thought. She started running to the area where the tree fell, underneath it, was the body of a dead cat. Firestar! The stronger warriors pushed the tree off their leader. He was alive, but barely. Oceanheart couched beside him.
"Firestar, can you hear me?" She asked, faintly. He opened his dull, life-less green eyes and nodded.
"I.... I've always wanted to...... protect you, O-Oceanheart and I d-did." Oceanheart nuzzled his cold, blood-stained fur, and cried her heart out.
"Don't die, Firestar, p-please, I love you. I don't want to lose you!" She sobbed. Firestar, weakly, licked her forehead with affection.
"I have to go, Oceanheart but, don't...... worry, I'll wait for y-you in Starclan, I.......promise. I...love....you." He said, before he as he drew his last breath and, after that, silence.
"Firestar? Firestar! FIRESTAR!!" Oceanheart let the tears flow freely down her cheeks. She buried her face into his fur once more. As everyone watch the grieving she-cat cry in her dead mate's fur, Sandstorm padded up to her.
"I'm sorry, Oceanheart, he's gone." She meowed. Oceanheart looked up at her. Sandstorm had once been Firestar's mate, before he asked Oceanheart to be his mate. Oceanheart was surprised at Sandstorm's gentle tone, when she talked to her. She leaned her head on Sandstorm's shoulder, for comfort. Sandstorm didn't make a fuse over it, too. She knew why Oceanheart was so upset about Firestar's death, she decided to let Oceanheart rest her head on her shoulder, after all she did forgive her for having kits with Firestar. The remaining cats started heading back to camp, soon after he rests, Brambleclaw will go to the moonstone, to receive his nine lives, and become leader. Once they were in sight from the gorge tunnel, Flamepaw sprinted up to his mother.
"Oceanheart! What happened? Where's Firestar?" The young apprentice asked. How could Oceanheart tell her son, that his father is dead? She sighed and sent Flamepaw to go to the apprentices' den. He obeyed. Oceanheart entered the camp, and headed to the medicine cat's den, where Flowerpaw was waiting.
"Oceanheart!" She exclaimed, she ran up to her and nuzzled her chest, in greeting, "How did the battle go?" She asked. Oceanheart's expression softened, Flowerpaw didn't need to ask that question, she already knew what happened, by looking at her mother's face.
"I'm sorry, Flowerpaw, Firestar's gone." Oceanheart meowed to her kit. Flowerpaw's eyes clouded with grief. She went back to sorting the herbs, she was so strong when it comes to the death of her family member. Oceanheart was proud of that.
She heard a faint cough from the corner of the den, it was Nightpaw. Oceanheart smiled at her but, Nightpaw looked at her as if she had done something to her that she won't forgive. Oceanheart guessed that Nightpaw over heard what she told Flowerpaw about her father, Firestar. Oceanheart padded over to her and licked her in between the ears, to comfort her. Nightpaw yawned and laid her head on her paws. Oceanheart left her to sleep and meowed goodbye to Flowerpaw. She decided that Sandstorm will tell Flamepaw about his father, instead of her. She padded across the clearing to the Warrior Den to rest for the night. Life will never be the same without Firestar.
