CHAPTER THREE

As Goldenheart's search patrol padded out of camp, Oakpaw's worry grew more and more. What could have happen to Sunpaw? What could've happen to Squirrelpaw? Sunpaw didn't like him very much because he was a dog but Squirrelpaw always treated him as though he was actually her brother. They went looking around the forest, but no trace of them were there. Suddenly, they all turned their heads at the sound of a terrified yelp. It was coming from the thunderpath. They all ran toward the thunderpath, and Oakpaw's heart was thumping so loud, he thought everycat in the forest heard it. As Goldenheart reached toward the thunderpath, he let out a gasp. Oakpaw soon followed, only to be greeted with the sight of two shapes huddled together. "Sunpaw! Squirrelpaw! Over here!" He yelled, but only one ginger shape moved. He watched as Sunpaw started to cautiously make his way toward them. Suddenly he froze. "What are you doing?! Come on!" Goldenheart yowled as Sunpaw just stood there, unable to move. Then, Oakpaw realized that a twoleg monster was getting louder and louder. "It's too late. I'm sorry." Sunpaw gasped as he looked at his paws. "No." Oakpaw growled, jumping in the thunderpath. "Oakpaw!" He didn't hear Cloudfoot's cry. He grabbed Sunpaw by the scruff, and dragged him to the others. As he sat him down, Oakpaw looked back at the thunderpath, just in time to see his sister, Squirrelpaw, be hit by the monster that was threatening Sunpaw. Everything went quiet. "No! She can't be dead! No! No! No!" Sunpaw cried. Oakpaw padded over to him. He sighed. "She was the best sister anyone could have gotten." He told Sunpaw. Sunpaw just looked at him, his sadness turning into rage. "Shut up! Your a dog! You could never understand how I feel! It's all your fault she died!" Sunpaw yelled at him, suddenly getting up. "What do you mean?" Goldenheart interrupted. "Squirrelpaw said that she wanted to get away from all the gossip, so we went on a walk together." Sunpaw explained quietly. Then, he looked at Oakpaw. "If you were never here, there would have been no gossip to get away from." Then Cloudfoot stepped in between them. Enough. Let's get back home." So, they padded off.

"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather around for a clan meeting." Oakpaw walked out of the medicine den to Applefoot. "Squirrelpaw was found, along with Sunpaw. They were found on the thunderpath, where Squirrelpaw was killed. Si-" Silverstar's mew was cut short. "It's all that dog's fault! We should drive him out!" That was Sunpaw. "Sunpaw. Have you forgotten that Oakpaw saved your life? If anything, he should be rewarded. And it is not any cat's fault, except for your own for letting her go out alone when you are much older. Now, since we do not have a body to mourn, we will sit up all night to keep vigil. May she hunt well and be healthy in StarClan." As cats started to huddle together in the clearing for the vigil, Oakpaw couldn't help but wonder. Was it really his fault his sister was dead? Did any cat hate him as much as Sunpaw did? Was there a cat... planning to get rid of him?
