CHAPTER ONE

Oakkit walked quietly behind his sister, Squirrelkit. He waited. They were both at 6 Moons and soon they would be apprentices! He was a little scared, since he was a dog that Silverstar found, and he didn't know how to get along with anyone. A voice broke into his thoughts. It was her father, Foxclaw, standing next to his mate, and his Oakkit's mother, Rainsplash. "Oakkit, have you met everyone in RiverClan? What about your older siblings?" He called. His older sisters, Applefoot and Icepaw, were on hunting patrol, and his older bothers, Sunpaw and Flamepaw, were getting ticks off of elders. "Of course I met them!" He replied. His mother purred. "Just wanted to make sure." She mewed. Suddenly, he felt Squirrelkit brush against him. "I'm so excited for our apprentice ceremony!" She meowed, bouncing up and down. Oakkit thought that if she got any more excited, she would bounce into a tree! He was about to reply when he suddenly heard Silverstar's voice. "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather around for a clan meeting!" She yowled. Suddenly, he heard Rainsplash's voice behind him. "Surprise. Your becoming apprentices today." She mewed. Silverstar then looked at Squirrelkit. "Squirrelkit, come forward." Squirrelkit came bounding to her. "Squirrelkit, you have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Squirrelpaw. Your mentor will be Goldenheart. I hope he will pass down all he knows on to you." Squirrelpaw touches noses with Goldenheart and suddenly, the clan chanted her new name. "Squirrelpaw! Squirrelpaw!" Then the clan grew silent as Silverstar called Oakkit forward. "Oakkit, you have reached the age of 6 moons, and it's time for you to be apprenticed. You may look different from the rest of us, but you still have the heart of a warrior. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Oakpaw and your mentor shall be Applefoot." The clan shouted his new name. Oakpaw touched noses with Applefoot but saw she was glanceing at him akwardly. He shrugged. Today they were a apprentices and even though he was a dog, nothing was going to stop him from being a warrior!
