Chapter One
Sunlight filtered through from above the great oak trees that grow upwards towards the sky. A sleek, dark body flashed between the bushes beneath the leafy treetops above. It was a black she-cat. She was chasing a small white creature who scurried along the forest floor. Suddenly, she bunched up her hind leg muscles and pounced at the small creature. She landed on top of it but she quickly lunged down and bit into the back of its neck, breaking it under her strong jaws.
Once the creature was dead, the black she-cat held it in her jaws and lifted it up. She turned back to the small group of cats she was part of.
"Sometimes, if the prey decides to run, you have to give chase, such as Night Dancer had just done." Meowed a mottled, dark ginger tabby tom with a darker, bushy tail. He nodded in approval to the black she-cat who dipped her head in acknowledgement.
"Woah! Can we try?" Asked a small tortoiseshell she-cat with dark splotches along her pelt, her green eyes glimmered in excitement as she looked up at the dark ginger tom before glancing to the black she-cat repeatedly. The other cat beside her, a black tom with amber eyes, lashed his tail in excitement.
"Night Dancer, can we try?" The black tom asked, his amber eyes too shone in anticipation and excitement. The older black cat set the dead mouse down and sighed, smiling as her ear twitched.
"I don't see a reason why not to try." Night Dancer meowed, this caused the two younger cats to bounce before they turned to the other older cat. "What do you think, Oak Tail?" She asked him with a small smirk of amusement.
Oak Tail looked at the younger cats. They were like little kittens asking to venture the territory as if they were powerful, undefeatable cats. He couldn't help but chuckle in amusement. "Fine, fine. You may, Dapple Paw, Rook Paw." He said with a smile.
At that, the two cats, before they could squeal with excitement that would scare all the prey in all of their territory, were given a warning glare by Oak Tail; that silenced them. However, their spirits remained high as they dropped into low crouches: the stalking position. It was their main technique to hunt and fight with this position, at least before a lot of conflict started, that is. These cats were known as ThunderClan cats. They were known for their ability to stalk through the heavy forest they called home, all while remaining silent and mostly hidden. Even the toughest of cats or prey can have a hard time finding a stalking ThunderClan cat without alerting them of their suspicion. The other Clans do have their quirks, but ThunderClan was the best at silently stalking.
The ThunderClan patrol soon returned back to camp, having successfully catching Night Dancer's mouse, and two small robins which Dapple Paw and Rook Paw had caught. Oak Tail was impressed and proud of both cats.
"Let all those old enough to catch their own prey join here beneath High Rock for a Clan meeting!" Call a large, silver-and-black tabby tom who stood on top of the highest point in the Clan camp. His majestic, long-haired pelt seemed to sway in the gentle breeze that swept through the camp as cats gathered beneath him, crowding the clearing to listen to their leader, Hail Star.
"I have called for a meeting to announce the cats who will join me at the Gathering tonight." Hail Star started, ripples of excitement washed over the cats below. The Gathering was something that almost all cats wanted to go to. It was where the cats from all four Clans could mingle and talk to one another while being protected under StarClan's sacred rule of fighting being forbidden. It was the only time that the four Clans could speak to one another without having to worry about crossing territories, breaking the warrior code, and so forth. Although, even under the sacred truce set down by their ancestors, there have been times when the Clans fought and sometimes, cats were even killed, and StarClan would show a sign of disapproval by covering the full moon with dark clouds, signalling for the Clans to split up immediately and end the Gathering.
"Those who will be joining me are: Gale Storm, Golden Pool, Lion Stride, Dark Pelt, Oak Tail, Night Dancer, Leaf Claw, Crow Flight, Flame Blossom, Heron Wing, Running Stripe, Strike Paw, Dove Paw, and Fern Shade and Bird Feather may come if you wish to." Hail Star announced, some cats cheered softly while others groaned and pouted that they couldn't go. Then, Hail Star dismissed the Clan with a flick of his tail before leaping down from his position on top of High Rock.
Night Dancer stood and stretched, yawning. Then, a long-haired, dark brown tabby tom with dark blue eyes joined her side. "Too bad Brown Stripe can't join us on this Gathering." He meowed, licking his paw then rubbing it to his forehead, sitting beside the she-cat who looked to him then to a light brown tom with green eyes who approached, joining them now as well. "Yeah. It would've been nice." Night Dancer replied, giving her brother, Brown Stripe, a smile and a wave of her tail. Brown Stripe returned it as he sat beside his siblings.
"Maybe sometime tomorrow, we could go out hunting together or just spend time together? The three of us?" Leaf Claw suggested, looking between his brother and sister who nodded. He smiled as his green eyes flickered with happiness. "All right, then it's settled." He said as he licked his paw again.
"Why don't we groom each other? We haven't done that in a long time." Brown Stripe suggested now, glancing happily between his siblings. Night Dancer smiled more and nodded, agreeing. It had been about seven moons since they received their warrior names. It had also been about nine moons since they last groomed each other. Finally, it was agreed once Leaf Claw nodded in agreement. The three cats were close siblings, very close. When they were younger, as kits, they would play as warriors fighting rival Clans, but when one of them would accidentally get hurt, they would stop playing and go to their side to comfort them. Leaf Claw, Night Dancer, and Brown Stripe were probably the closest cats to one another than all of the other three Clans.
The three siblings settled down beside the warriors' den and started to groom each other like they used to, starting with their youngest brother, Brown Stripe. Then to Night Dancer, and finally, their oldest sibling, Leaf Claw. By the time they were done, it was about time to leave for the Gathering. Night Dancer and Leaf Claw rose to their paws and stretched.
"All right, we'll see you after the Gathering, Brown Stripe. Maybe next time, we'll convince Hail Star to let all of us go at once?" Leaf Claw meowed in amusement, making Brown Stripe chuckle. "He'll be sure to make you pluck ticks off of the elders if you ask him that silly of a question!" The light brown tom said jokingly, his tail waving happily as his older siblings started towards the small group of cats that were gathering, preparing to follow Hail Star. The three said their short farewells before Leaf Claw and Night Dancer joined the group of cats.
Hail Star gave a nod to the cats, silently reminding them of how things would go for traveling to the Gathering place. With a swift flick of his tail, he turned and led the way to the Gathering place, leading the rest of ThunderClan who followed after their leader.
