Chapter Five
Gale Storm looked over ThunderClan as Hail Star and Golden Pool had just left only a few minutes ago. His yellow eyes were sharp and filled with determination that he could care for his Clan while their leader and their more experienced medicine cat were gone. His ear tip twitched when he heard someone approaching him, he relaxed his muscles that tensed up when he saw it was only Night Dancer.
"Gale Storm?" Night Dancer meowed, lowering her ears slightly then bowed her head in respect for the deputy. She took a seat beside Gale Storm who he blinks at.
"What is it?" The deputy meowed, his tail flicking then laying neatly across his paws. He looked at the young black she-cat, his own black pelt rippled as he shifted.
Night Dancer looked to his neck. "Is your wound healed?" She asked worriedly, her ears remained lowered. She was obviously concerned for her Clan's deputy, the fur along her spine had been prickling up in a pulsing motion ever since she made her way to Gale Storm.
"Golden Pool and Dew Pool told me that I shouldn't strain myself too much, but other than that, my wound wasn't deep enough to be fatal. There will probably be a scar there if my fur doesn't grow back." Gale Storm explained to Night Dancer who nodded, he glanced to her own scar down her shoulder; he remembered what it was from.
Gale Storm had witnessed Night Dancer taking on a badger that wandered too close to ThunderClan camp. She warned the Clan and at first, she fought alone. Her recklessness drew her to try to drive the badger off without having to get other cats injured in case this badger decided to continue towards their camp. However, Night Dancer had been distracted when a young kit, who Hail Star gave purposely to Night Dancer as an apprentice, Rook Kit acted brave and tried to fend the badger off, thinking that he would scare the black-and-white creature off.
Gale Storm recalled, as he ran to their aid, Night Dancer throwing herself in front of Rook Kit who hissed at the badger, trying to intimidate it. This caused her to get hit from a swift, powerful swipe from the badger, giving her the long scar from her left shoulder down a little past her elbow. He remembered seeing the young warrior bleeding and staggering as she nudged Rook Kit away while he and other warriors managed to join her side and eventually, they had driven the badger back and out of ThunderClan territory, hopefully for good.
Night Dancer survived, but barely. The amount of blood she lost was a dangerous amount, and Rook Kit felt extremely guilty, which most of the Clan said that it was a lesson for him; Night Dancer couldn't help but agree. But, Night Dancer had forgiven the kit and ever since then, Hail Star planned for Rook Kit to become Night Dancer's apprentice when he reached his sixth moon. The ThunderClan leader hadn't told Rook Kit's parents, Crow Flight and Ice Foot, of his plan to give Rook Kit to Night Dancer for an apprentice, even though Ice Foot requested that Rook Kit be apprenticed and trained by his father, mostly due to her favoritism towards the black tom kit.
Night Dancer sighed. "That's a relief. I'm sorry, I should've been there earlier to help you, but Willow Heart-" She started, but Gale Storm interrupted her.
"It is quite all right, Night Dancer. You did your best and I should've called for the second battle patrol as soon as I heard Ice Star tell her warriors that they could kill. But I was distracted and hesitated, honestly." Gale Storm admitted, looking back to the ThunderClan cats in camp, mingling together, sharing tongues, and sharing prey together, oblivious to their conversation. Night Dancer looked surprised as she finally looked up to the ThunderClan deputy.
"I did not want to risk any more of our ThunderClan warriors to get injured, knowing that Ice Star would let her cats kill without consequences. With ThunderClan at so little numbers compared to WindClan and RiverClan, I thought that not sending them in so soon would be best." The deputy meowed, his tail tip flicking back and forth, the warrior beside him seemed worried, but confident.
"I believe it was the right call, Gale Storm. We did manage to fend off RiverClan in the end, so as long as no cat was killed in the battle, I think you did what you thought was best for not just the cats in the battle patrol, but for ThunderClan as a whole." The black she-cat mewed, smiling gently, her long-haired tail swished back then forth once, then stopped over her paws. Her blue eyes looked at the deputy's eyes.
Gale Storm chuckled and smiled back. "Thank you very much, Night Dancer. I truly hope I made the right decision back then." He meowed to the younger cat, his ear twitching again.
Night Dancer looked back to the Clan camp, watching the cats interact with each other. Currently, both her brothers were out of camp. She wanted to go with them, but Dew Pool insisted that she'd stay in camp to recover from her wounds from the battle at Sunningrocks. The black she-cat pricked her ears when some kits rushed over. It was Gale Storm and Sand Pool's kits; Blaze Kit, Owl Kit, and Small Kit.
"Dad! Dad! Dad! Dad! Dad!" The kits repeated happily, bouncing the entire way as they ran to their father. Gale Storm chuckled when he saw Sand Pool follow them.
"What are you three doing out of the nursery?" He questioned them with a slight tilt of his head, smiling gently. The three kits tumbled over his paws and Small Kit started to climb onto Gale Storm's back while Blaze Kit and Owl Kit chased and pounced on his flicking tail tip. Night Dancer watched in amusement as Sand Pool finally joined them.
"You three are in so much trouble!" The pale brown she-cat scolded in a half joking-manner, giving a lick to Gale Storm's shoulder as she looked to their three kits who mewed and squeaked like the little, trouble-making kits they were.
Night Dancer purred. "Your kits are so cute and beautiful!" She meowed happily, her tail swishing back and forth. Sand Pool and Gale Storm dipped their heads in gratitude before they looked back to their three kits.
Small Kit turned when he saw Night Dancer's long-haired tail swish away, he jumped off of Gale Storm's back and pounced on her tail. Owl Kit and Blaze Kit soon followed as they mewed excitedly. They seemed intrigued by the fact that her tail hair was longer than Gale Storm's and Sand Pool's. They stalked and chased her tail excitedly.
"When you have kits, Night Dancer, never forget that your mate should always love you. That your kits will be your priority when they are alive. Even in the darkest of times, your family will be there for you." Sand Pool meowed to Night Dancer who nods in acknowledgement before turning back to the scrambling kittens at her tail.
Hail Star and Morning Song gave each other a lick of respect and sibling love to their shoulders. "I have been watching over you and ThunderClan, Hail Star." Morning Song started, sitting before her older brother who lowered his ears slightly, frowning.
"I hope that I would make you proud doing my best by serving ThunderClan." The ThunderClan leader told the dappled she-cat, seeming worried.
"I sense that you are worried about WindClan and RiverClan. And my daughter." The StarClan cat meowed, her tail shifting while her ear twitched, Hail Star nodded.
"I want to see or know if StarClan has any help to give ThunderClan and ShadowClan. I fear that Night Dancer's theory might be true. The last thing the Clans need right now is a war, we've finally had good moons and a good season so far, so I worry that Tawny Star and Ice Star might break that." Hail Star said honestly, clearly distressed.
Morning Song nodded. "I understand. However, we cannot make WindClan or RiverClan stop what they plan to do. But, StarClan will help you with something else that will be useful when the time comes." She said to her brother, her light blue eyes locked with Hail Star's own light blue eyes.
"Night Dancer has a gift that no other cat before or in the future will ever have. She was gifted this because her path in the future will become dark, and I had asked StarClan to gift this power to her so that she may protect her Clan and the others. You must guide her, else she will misuse this power and create more chaos." Morning Song warned, her expression turning into a serious one as she narrowed her eyes to her older brother.
"What kind of gift?" Hail Star dared to ask.
"The powerful, ancient cats of the past have decided to give their strength, knowledge, wisdom, and energy to her." She finally said, Hail Star's eyes widened. "Do you remember being told by Gale Storm, about how she had fought in battle at Sunningrocks? She didn't realize it, but she used some of the ancient cats' strength and energy to fight. Any cat would've drowned when Willow Heart tried to drown her. Night Dancer doesn't know it herself, but she holds great power in her paws that if she doesn't use it correctly, she will cause the fall of not only ThunderClan, but all the four Clans entirely." Morning Song's tone was in a serious, warning manner while her tail lashed back and forth.
Hail Star was surprised at how serious his sister sounded, he never really heard her get angry or even hostile towards anyone unless it was during battle. But he swallowed as he nodded. "Is it because of her-" He was cut off by the dappled she-cat.
"Of her theory? Yes. Her theory is correct, only because one of the ancient cats, Sedge Star, had given some of the important information, telling you, Lion Stride, and Whorl Star the danger of the future that will come sooner than anyone would expect. But, know that Night Dancer came up with most of it, Sedge Star only approved of it." Morning Song meowed, her ear twitched. Her approval of Night Dancer's theory sent shivers down Hail Star's spine while he listened.
"So, it will happen no matter what?" Hail Star finally asked the question that had been bothering him ever since the black she-cat had told them of her theory. His younger sister nodded, seeming saddened. "Should I tell the Clan?" He asked now, becoming worried about all the Clans as he knew bloodshed would come.
"Only hint to them of your suspicion towards WindClan and RiverClan. As much as I am not supposed to take sides, even StarClan knows that this battle will be won with one side, whether we like it or not. We must help guide the four Clans to safety, not destruction." Morning Song informed Hail Star. "Do not tell them everything. Another StarClan cat, originally from ShadowClan, will tell this information to Whorl Star as well. Please, help him and ShadowClan as much as you can." She meowed.
"Will I ever see you again?" Hail Star asked, noticing that Morning Song was beginning to fade along with his surroundings; he could tell that he was waking up. The dappled she-cat sighed as her blue gaze fixed onto Hail Star's.
"You already do every day." Morning Song meowed with a gentle smile as she and the StarClan territory faded to nothing around Hail Star. He awoke.
Hail Star lifted his head slowly and opened his eyes, looking over to his side where he saw Golden Pool, awaking just as he did. "What did you see?" The ThunderClan leader asked the golden medicine cat. Golden Pool looked to her leader.
"I......" Golden Pool struggled to speak as she trembled, looking as if she had just came from getting soaked in the icy cold river. Her amber eyes were wide and her pupils were narrow slits in her eyes. The fur along her spine rose and her ears lowered in fear.
"I saw the end of the Clans."
