Chapter 2: Copperpaw

A kit can become an apprentice once they reach the age of six moons.

(Outskirt Territories Warrior Code, Code 8)

"All cats old enough to catch their own prey, gather around the Monster Tail for a clan meeting!" Mothstar proclaimed, getting the attention of every cat in Rustclan.

The day has finally come! Copperkit thought excitedly. Today, he and his siblings would finally be apprentices. He and his sister Rushkit raced towards the Monster Tail, while their other sister Shadekit padded close behind.

The three kits sat down with the rest of the clan as Mothstar stood tall in front of them.

"Cats of Rustclan, six moons have passed and it is time that we welcome these kits as apprentices." Mothstar announced. "Rushkit, you have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Rushpaw. Your mentor will be Slatespring. I hope Slatespring will pass all she knows on to you." Mothstar then paused and turned her glance towards Slatespring. "Slatespring, you are ready to take on an apprentice. You have received excellent training from Meadowfrost, and you have shown yourself to be respectful and alert. You will be the mentor of Rushpaw, and I expect you to pass all you know to Rushpaw."

Rushpaw raised her head high when given her new name, but stayed where she was.

I guess Mothstar picked Slatespring to mentor Rushk- Rushpaw some self control. Copperkit thought to himself. Then he noticed Mothstar's gaze turn towards him, and he immediately froze. I'm next. He thought to himself, both excited and nervous.

"Copperkit, you have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you to become an apprentice. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you shall be known as Copperpaw. Your mentor will be Brightweb. I hope Brightweb will pass all he knows on to you. Brightweb, you are ready to take on an apprentice. You have received excellent training from Brackenlight, and have shown yourself to be selfless and clever. You will be the mentor of Copperpaw, and I expect you to pass on all you know to Copperpaw." Mothstar declared.

Copperpaw noticed Shadekit glanced nervously before Mothstar continued speaking.

"And Shadekit, you have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you to become an apprentice. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you shall be known as Shadepaw. Your mentor will be Runningsplash. I hope Runningsplash will pass all she knows to you." Mothstar said before pausing again. "Runningsplash, you are ready to take on an apprentice. You have received excellent training from Lakecloud, and you have shown yourself to be brave and loyal. You will be the mentor of Shadepaw, and I expect you to pass all you know on to Shadepaw." Mothstar said. "That concludes this clan meeting, and the apprentices can now go to meet their new mentors."

Copperpaw padded over to Brightweb.

"Good evening Brightweb." Copperpaw said.

"Hello Copperpaw. Are you excited to be an apprentice?" Brightweb replied.

"Yes, very." Copperpaw answered.

"Great. Be up early tomorrow, I plan to show you around the territory during the dawn patrol." Brightweb stated.

"Understood." Copperpaw replied. The dawn patrol on my first day as an apprentice? This is exciting! "Will you teach me how to hunt then too?" Copperpaw asked

"I will try to show you some of the basics if we find something while I show you the territory, but I will probably save hunting lessons for tomorrow." Brightweb said. Anyway, it's getting late and you should probably head over to the apprentice's den. The large white twoleg monster with an opening in the side, a few tail-lengths away from the warrior's den." Brightweb added before walking away.

My first patrol! I'll finally get to leave camp! Copperpaw thought to himself as he went to the Apprentices' Den. It was just as Brightweb has described it, a large, but also somewhat long, twoleg monster. Most of its metallic pelt was white, but some of it has become a more orange-red color.

"Is this really what a twoleg monster looks like?" Shadepaw asked.

"I could take one of these on in a fight any day!" Rushpaw said smugly.

"Yeah right. A live twoleg monster could turn you into crowfood!" Copperpaw mewed.

"You don't know that!" Rushpaw growled.

"A cat defeating a twoleg monster is completely outlandish! Have you heard any stories about our ancestors doing that?" Copperpaw growled back.

"Well then I would be the first." Rushpaw meowed confidently.

"Shouldn't we be going to sleep?" Shadepaw mewed quietly.

"Only if Copperpaw agrees that I could beat a twoleg monster." Rushpaw replied.

"You couldn't kill a twoleg monster if it was sleeping!" Copperpaw hissed.

"Don't we have patrols tomorrow though? And wouldn't we be tired during them if we don't sleep now?" Shadepaw mewed a little louder.

"Fine. But this debate isn't over." Rushpaw said as she padded into the Apprentices' Den.

Shadepaw and Copperpaw quickly followed her in. Due to the soft inside of the monster there was no bedding needed within the den, which was a big difference to them when compared to the nursery. While there was a little more arguing about who would sleep where, they ended up agreeing on Rushpaw getting to sleep near the front of the monster near a strange round thing on a wall, Copperpaw in the back corner of the twoleg monster, and Shadepaw near the middle. After choosing their spots, the three apprentices quickly fell asleep.
