"Mum?"

Squirrelkit squeaked, jabbing Spottedflame in the stomach. Dawn light filtered through the brambles. Spottedflame opened an eye, looking at her kit.
"Yes, darling?"
"Where's dad?"

She shrugged. "Probably organising patrols. You can go look" Squirrelkit squealed in excitement, and Smallkit looked outside, bouncing on his paws.

"Let's go!" Smallkit darted out, then skidded to a stop with Squirrelkit beside her.

"Dad, get up" Squirrelkit head butted Adderfrost, Who was lying on his side. The dirt around him was tinged red and muddy. Blood leaked from a gash on his throat.  Smallkit poked him.

Spottedflame padded to the entrance. "Kits, is he-" Her eyes widened and she let out a screech, darting forwards. "Adderfrost!"

Lilacstar was instantly out of her den, eyes wide. Spottedflame dropped onto the ground, licking Adderfrost's face. Smallkit and Squirrelkit stepped back, shocked.

"I-Is dad alright?" Smallkit squeaked. Lilacstar called them over quietly, guiding them into her den. "Stay there." They whined in protest.
