Chapter 1
The sun was out and Twolegs were busy doing their normal things. Like going into their monsters, or staying in their nests talking to themselves. Rufus stretched and woke up. "Another day." He mewed.
"What are you up to Ruffy?" Meowed a voice. A black tom with a white muzzle, patches on his head, and a patch on his rear. "Hi Morty." Rufus meowed. Morty sat on his Twoleg nest's window. "Any plans for today?" His voice high with his usual optimism.
Rufus flicked his tail in response. "Where's Orto?" He asked looking around. Morty tipped his head to one side. But before he could answer he heard a tin hit the ground. "Sorry." It was a black tom with a white flecked chest and head down to his back.
Rufus curled his tail. "It's okay Ortty." He purred in amusement.
"I should get back. My housefolk will probably call me for mealtime." Morty mewed.
"Bye Morty." Orto mewed.
"Take care." Rufus put in afterward.
"Thank you." The tom with the bandana meowed and walked from sight. Orto looked at Rufus. "I saw some of the bandits on my way to you. They looked edgy.." He murmured. Rufus looked at his paws. "Almost everycat's on edge ever since the thievery has stooped to random group attacks thanks to Shere-Khan and his cats." He murmured.
"I know." Orto muttered lashing his long black tail.
"Hey! Let me go Mackey!" A voice wailed. Rufus flicked his tail for Orto to follow behind him but stay close. His eyes landed on a brown tabby kittypet and a pure white tom with somewhat rosey-red eyes and red collar stubbed with teeth.
"I think you forgot how things work in this city Pip, so let me give you a reminder," he sneered stepping closer. "You give me those sausages, and I don't rip out your throat." His eyes gleamed darkly.
"Yeah!" Growled a dark gray and black striped tabby who appeared beside him. Poker.
"But this is my food!" Pip squeaked almost like a kit as he began to tremble. Mackey and Poker stalked towards him.
"Hey! Leave him alone!" A voice yowled and a light brown tabby she-cat stood in front of Pip. The two toms looked at each other. "My my, a pretty thing we got here." Poker drawled.
"Hey, what do you say we take this meat and eat it together my dear?" Mackey meowed, his voice smooth, standing in front of the tabby she-cat, pressing close to her, his tail delicately brushing her back. The she-cat eyed him for one heartbeat. Then as fast as a bird, her paw flew out slashing his nose.
Mackey stumbled back as Poker charged forward, ready to face her, but the she-cat dashed out of the way and pounced on him from behind. Mackey seemed ready to attack her while she was distracted.
Rufus bounded in and barreled into his flank, his claws scoring home. Then Orto rushed to Pip. "Here.. follow me." He gently guided the small tom to a safe route out of the fray. While Rufus and the she-cat were still fighting their enemies. The she-cat was scratching his back hard as he was wailing in pain, struggling to get away. The tabby tom kicked her in the chin, she grunted and let him go, not looking as he ran.
Mackey tore after him, knocking down a piece of wood. Rufus licked at a stinging scratch on his muzzle. "Nice work." He meowed. The brown tabby she-cat turned to him. "Thanks." She mewed simply. Orto bounded back. "Pip is fine. Went somewhere safe." He meowed and looked at the she-cat. "That fighting sure was something." He meowed to her. She curled her tail around herself. "Thanks for the assistance." She meowed.
"The name's Rufus," he meowed then flicked his tail to his companion. "And my friend here is named Orto." He looked to the she-cat.
"I'm Kia." She meowed, flicking her fluffy tail. Rufus dipped his head respectfully. "Pleased to meet you Kia." He meowed formally.
The three cats looked at each other. Rufus cleared his throat. Orto straightened up. "So.. what happens now?" He asked awkwardly. Rufus blinked and looked around with realization. They could be the cats to end the disarray. "What do you say we line some mangey fur for bedding?" He purred in question.
