Chapter 3

"Well that's good at least! You'll be better by the time we become apprentices!" Spiderkit's new echoed through the medicine den.
Featherpool was sorting herbs and Dapplekit, who was recovering from her bough of Green Cough, was settled down in her mossy nest. Spiderkit was seated in front of her sibling, her white tipped tail swishing.
"Yeah..." Dapplekit mewed, yet her voice brimmed with a skeptical tone. "Aren't Venomkit and Redkit becoming 'paws today?"
Spiderkit nodded. The two older kits had been boasting all day about the upcoming ceremony. It was bound to happen soon, most likely any moment now.
"May all cats old enough to catch their own prey, join here under high rock for a Clan meeting!" Pantherstar's voice rung through camp.
Speak of the devil.
Spiderkit got to her paws and padded towards the exit of the medicine den. "Come on Dapplekit!"
Dapplekit shakily pushed herself to her paws, wobbling after her litter mate, Featherpool following them out.
The rest of the Clan was already gathered, looking up at Pantherstar expectantly.
Venomkit and his brother were at the front of the crowd, their pelts sleek and groomed. Their parents, Owlfoot and Moonpelt, sat side by side, their chests puffed out proudly.
Venomkit looked calm and cool now, while Redkit looked like he was about to burst with joy.
"Today is an important ceremony, the making of new apprentices who will train to become warriors!" Pantherclaw meowed from his perch. The sun caught his black pelt just right so it showed his dark gray spots. "Venomkit, Redkit, step forward."
The two kits moved up from the crowd, no hesitation.
"Sweetheart, I hope you can share your wisdom onto Redpaw, using all the training you have learned."
Sweetheart dipped her head shyly. "I'll do my best, Pantherstar." She promised, her voice sweet like honey.
Redpaw ran up to his new mentor and touched noses with her.
"Hailstrike, you will be Venompaw's mentor." Pantherstar meowed.
Venompaw trotted up to his new mentor and touched noses with him. Hailstrike whispered something, but it was drown out by the cheer of Spiderkit's Clanmates as they called the new names.
"Venompaw! Redpaw! Venompaw! Redpaw!"
Spiderkit cheered out her friend's new names, calling twice as loud for Dapplekit, who hadn't regained her voice fully.
I can't wait until it's our turn!

Spiderkit let out a growl of frustration as she toppled onto her back, coating her black fur in dust.
Mouse dung!
"Use your tail, Spiderkit." Brindlepaw instructed, lifting one paw to help the kit up. "It will help with balance."
Spiderkit huffed and scrambled up, ready to try again.
Brindlepaw was teaching all the kits how to stay balanced on two legs and swipe with their forepaws.
The dark brown tabby apprentice had learned the move from Mockingflame a couple sunrises ago, the day Venompaw and Redpaw became apprentices and joined her in the apprentice den.
"How's this?" Brackenkit mewled, dragging Brindlepaw's attention away from Spiderkit. The younger she-kit was perfectly balanced.
"Good job! You mastered it fast!" Brindlepaw praised.
Ashkit sneezed. "Yeah, but her tail is throwing dust at me..."
"Stop complaining, she is balanced at least!" Dapplekit mewled before letting out a squeak as she toppled over.
Brindlepaw's eyes went round. "Is this too challenging of a move for kits?" She asked, half too herself.
Snowdove, who was laying nearby, answered her question. "It's never to early to practice advanced moved." She meowed. Her voice then turned a little more sympathetic. "But maybe you should let them eat, they look famished."
Brindlepaw nodded, then turned to the kits. "Why don't you all grab a bite to eat and we can practice later?"
Spiderkit noticed how hungry she was, she hadn't eaten since she woke up.
Spiderkit shook out her pelt and scampered over to the fresh kill pile, following the other kits.
Brackenkit and Ashkit snatched a small pheasant from the pile while Dapplekit grabbed a vole.
The hunting patrol must have just came back without Spiderkit noticing, because when she touched a mouse with her nose it was slightly warm. She gently picked it up and padded over to the edge of camp to eat it.
As she settled down she watched the camp do it's daily business
Icepaw was now talking to Brindlepaw, a smug look on the small apprentice's face. Pantherstar was dozing next to Dawnshine beneath high rock, while Ashkit and Brackenkit started playing with their prey.
Ashkit picked up the remains of the pheasant, as Spiderkit took a bite of her prey, then started scampering around with it.
He yelped as he accidentally ran into a neat pile of stacked herbs Featherpool had outside the medicine den.
The green fronds spilled onto the ground and the medicine cat came out of her den and gave a frustrated huff, scolding Ashkit.
The gray kit gave her an apologetic look, then padded away, his paws dragging.
Spiderkit's gaze snatched to the camp entrance as Hailstrike and Sweetheart came into camp with their apprentices just behind them.
In Redpaw's jaws was two mice, but Spiderkit gasped as she saw Venomkit carrying an enormous rabbit. It was almost as big as him!
"Great catch!" Owlfoot exclaimed, running over to her sons, giving them both a lick on the ear.
Moonpelt purred and padded over as well.
Dapplekit had finished her vole and lay down beside Spiderkit as the black and white kit took another bite from her succulent meal.
"Venompaw is so handsome, isn't he?" She purred, her eyes twinkling.
Spiderkit gave her sibling a look. "Aren't we a little too young to be thinking like that?" Spiderkit's blue eyes dulled slightly.
Dapplekit swished her tail. "Well we are almost apprentices, and we'll be warriors not long after."
Spiderkit shrugged. "I guess that's true." She meowed before finishing her mouse.
Bird song echoed through the trees. They seemed to be singing about an upcoming rain, or something of the sort.
Spiderkit let out a yawn.
I can't wait until we do become an apprentice...
