Chapter 3
Mittens felt disappointed, why couldn't she go with Snowstorm! She flicked her tail with anger her whiskers twitching. I should be allowed to join the clans! I'm strong.
It was nearly leaf-bare and Mittens was cold and all alone. The trees were dancing in the wind, dressed in their carnival clothes of gold and scarlet. They seemed to play about the earthy hues of the branch and trunk like kits in the nursery. To distract Mittens from her despair she wantedcto take her own time to enjoy the forest and it's treasures. Taking in a freshly calm air with that hint of earthly aroma, the fragrance of homeliness. A single leaf pirouetted down a invisible spiral of breeze spinning through the air as it let itself be carried down landing on her nose.
Like a kit she played with the leaf enjoying herself she felt younger and free. Another group of leaves tumbled in a downward twirling course it landed gently onto the ground. She felt happier letting herself play like nobody was watching.
The air was musty, still frosty even at near midday. Leaf-bare was approaching she could tell it. But it felt like ages away to her. Then, her playful spirit was shattered at the sound of loud lumbering pawsteps as a orange she-cat emerged out of the bushes with unsheathed claws. Lashing out at the badgers face. The poor cat's ear was torn and blood stained her fur. Mittens had to help - but she had no battle practice.
Despite the fact she had never fought anything tougher then a twoleg kit she unsheathed her claws. Pouncing at the badger and raking her claws all over the animal. It turned on her snarling as it went in for the attack. Snap! Bite! Dodge! Growl! As she fought with no skill falling and tumbling ungracefully the orange cat seemed to do it with such precision. Everything went so quickly it was all a blur.
Mittens struggled to fight, bleeding all over. She had never been in a proper battle and could barely get her paws to move. She grimaced. After a hard battle the badger managed to leave the blood stained battlefield and leave the two injured cats there. "Are you ok?" Mittens asked the amber she-cat.
"Yes, I'm alright what about you?" The cat replied back.
"I think I'm ok" As she tried to stand she collapsed and her legs buckled under her. Mittens whimpered.
"Oh my starclan, your injured - pretty badly!" The orange cat said with a worried tone. Mittens recalled when she struggled against the badger it threw her into a tree and she lay there dazed for a while.
"I can't stand up," the injured white she-cat said. "Ow..."
"Hey don't worry I'm Pumpkin the pro with herbs I've got this" the cat replied and padded into the bushes "I'll go and find the right herbs!" Pumpkin began to search for bindweed and found a batch of them. She then collected some comfrey root and cobweb to soothe the gouge and ease wrenched shoulders. Then she returned back and soaked up the bleeding and bound up her leg with the herbs she collected.
"Feeling any better?" Asked Pumpkin.
"Yes thank you so much you should use the leftover herbs to treat your own gashes you don't want a infection either"
"I will don't worry" The amber she-cat began to treat her wounds and blood-red cobwebs littered the floor from both their injuries.
"Thank you so much for helping me" Mittens said.
"Hey no problem thanks for trying your best to fight the badger, you've never been in a battle before haven't you; your a Kittypet aren't you? I've never seen you in the forest before, kittypets are weak and lazy," Pumpkin commented.
Mittens muttered, "does that mean I will never learn to hunt? Escaping the twoleg's would be for nothing"
"Well your probably all soft and daft but after fighting the badger I can make exceptions and point out that your fighting sucks" she replied
"I ran from my twolegs and I really need to learn to hunt they starved me out there! Please help me learn to hunt and fight and swim!" The white she-cat pleaded, "I'm not a soft Kittypet I left for a reason."
"I'm sorry but kittypets will never be able to learn, you were probably plump and think u were starved!"
"No! I need this forest and your help I'm going to starve either way if u don't help me" Mittens was begging now.
"Ok ok. But if you are all soft and lazy and don't want to do anything because you've done enough exercise by walking go back to your dumb twoleg nest."
"Thank you, you don't know what this means to me!"
