Prologue

The moon was almost full and shining down upon the peaceful RainClan camp, a large grassy clearing surrounded by reeds.

A dark gray tom was sitting atop a big, flat, mossy stone, looking down on the RainClan cats who were grooming each other in the soft rain.

The tom's dark gray fur was moist with rain, but he didn't mind, like all the RainClan cats he loved the rain.

A slender, black and white she~cat walked over and climbed onto the mossy stone that held the tom. She dipped her head in greeting to the dark gray tom and he did the same.

"Hello Dovesplash. What brings you here to me?" The tom asked standing up.

"Boulderstar, I have great news. Your kits were just born!" Dovesplash mewed with enthusiasm. Boulderstar's yellow eyes grew wide.

"R-really?" He gasped.

"Yes! Vineleaf is with them now and Berrytail is doing fine. You c-" Dovesplash was interrupted by loud barks.

The peace was gone when suddenly, a large black and white creature jumped out of the reeds and into the camp at the other side of camp.

"It's a dog!" Boulderstar yowled.

The RainClan cats started to run to the nursery and elder's den to protect the queens, kits, and elders.

Any cats who were near the dog, ran away from it to avoid getting suddenly attacked.

One tom, a sandy colored apprentice was too slow. The dog grabbed the apprentice with it's teeth and shook him violently. He writhed and yowled in agony as he was being torn apart. Blood seeped from the apprentice as the dog dropped him. The tom's eyes were glazed over, he was dead.

A gray and ginger she~cat turned around to find the apprentice dead. "No! Sandpaw!" She yowled in grief and anger. The she~cat ran towards the dog and jumped on it's back, claws unsheathed. She raked her claws down the dog's back as it snarled and snapped at her. A black tom, realizing that the she~cat was attacking the dog, grappled himself onto one of the dog's back legs.

A couple of other cats stopped and were about to attack the dog as well, when just then, four more dogs ran through the reeds and into the camp. They crushed grass, reeds, twigs and leaves as they did. One dog grabbed the black tom by the neck and ripped him off the other dog. The tom was dead almost instantly. The she~cat scratched the dog who attacked the tom in the eyes. The dog she was on top of managed to bite her tail and dragged her off. It jumped on her and killed her with a blow to the head.

Boulderstar watched the destruction of his clan in shock. The dogs were attacking and killing more and more cats. Now the elder's den was unprotected and there was only one cat protecting the nursery, a light gray tabby tom.

A huge black and ginger dog grabbed the gray tom by the neck when the tom lunged at the dog. The massive dog killed the warrior, and now no cats protected the nursery.

Boulderstar saw a brown tabby she~cat crouching over her four small, newborn, kits in the nursery. She hissed at the dog that was coming her way.

Boulderstar recognized them. Berrytail! My kits! He jumped off the rock and ran towards the dog, adrenaline pumping through his veins.

He kept running and scratched his claws across the dog's side. Boulderstar stopped in front of Berrytail and turned around to face the dog, hissing. Boulderstar's dark gray fur was bristled and his tail was fluffed up to twice it's normal size. The dog barked and bared it's long teeth.

Boulderstar scratched the dog's snout and the dog whined and shook it's head back and forth, scattering scarlet drops of blood on the cool grass.

It turned to Boulderstar, fury in it's eyes and slowly walked towards him, Berrytail and their four small, mewling kits. Boulderstar held his ground and let out a low growl. He then jumped for the dog's neck. The dog however, had other plans.

Before Boulderstar could reach the dog, it caught one of his front legs in it's teeth and threw him across the clearing. Boulderstar saw stars spinning in his head as he hit the ground hard.

Boulderstar tried desperately to stand up, but fell down. He looked down at his leg and saw it was snapped into a weird angle. Fire-like pain shot through his entire body

The dog then turned to Boulderstar and ran towards him. Boulderstar thought he could see that the dog had the look of evil in it's eyes as it bit into Boulderstar's throat.

Boulderstar could feel the warm blood oozing from his wound. The dog pulled away it's grip fast, making long gouging marks in Boulderstar's neck.

It then turned it's attention back to the nursery and ran to Berrytail and the kits. Berrytail whaled in fear and grief and the kits mewled helplessly as the dog was inching closer and closer.

That was the last thing Boulderstar saw before everything went black. The pain slipped away, along with everything else. Boulderstar recognized this feeling, it was the release of death.

It felt like only a few moments before Boulderstar woke up in a clearing surrounded by tall pine trees, much different than the reeds Boulderstar was used to.

Boulderstar couldn't feel anymore pain and his leg wasn't snapped anymore. He looked up and saw Silverpelt shining brightly in the sky. Then he remembered.

"Berrytail?" Boulderstar spoke and a soft echo rang out afterwards. His yellow eyes searched around for his brown tabby mate.

"I'm here," a soft voice replied. Boulderstar turned to where he heard the familiar voice to find Berrytail walking down from the starry night sky, leaving a sparkling path of pawprints behind her. Berrytail stepped down in front of Boulderstar and touched noses with him.

"I'm sorry I can't stay. After all I still have three more lives to spare. I need to go back and help the Clan," Boulderstar said, sadness edging his voice.

"I'm sorry. You can't go back," Berrytail told him.

"What!?" Boulderstar mewed, shocked.

"StarClan has decided that you are to stay here, there would be nothing left for you to go to if you went back," Berrytail explained. Boulderstar looked away and gritted his teeth in anger.

"So if you're here in
StarClan then our kits must be too," Boulderstar said trying to change the subject of not being able to help his Clan. He felt so angry and grief bubbled in his stomach.

"Yes, they are," Berrytail replied looking up at the night sky.

Four small kits walked down from the sky just as Berrytail had done. The kits left small, starry pawprints in their wake. They all stopped in front of their parents. A dark brown tom-kit, a black tom-kit, a light brown tom-kit and a dark gray she~kit.

Some of Boulderstar's anger went away as he touched noses with each one.

"Hello my four, beautiful kits." Boulderstar closed his eyes and breathed in the scent of each kit.

Boulderstar turned to Berrytail as a thought came to his mind. "Are there any survivors from the attack?" He asked.

"Yes, one," Berrytail replied.

"Who?"

"Dovesplash."
