Chapter 1
Lightstar walked into the FireClan camp, a sandy clearing surrounded and protected by cactus plants and thick vines. The vines were brushing against her calico fur as cats trailed behind her.
The full moon was starting to set in the now almost dawn sky along with the giant stretch of stars called Silverpelt.
The hot camp was soon filled with cats chatting away to each other about what had happened at the gathering that night.
Lightstar waited at the entrance of the camp for Grayleaf. She soon saw her dark gray deputy come into the camp when almost all the rest of the cat's were in the camp.
Grayleaf turned to Lightstar and spoke in a friendly tone. "Oh hey, tomorrow, Leafheart's kit, Clawkit and Silverwing's kits, Thornkit, Longkit and Bellkit are turning six moons. So you know what that means. It's time for an apprentice ceremony!" Grayleaf replied
"Alright. I'll make sure to do that tomorrow at the meeting. Get some rest, you need it," Lightstar mewed back.
"You too," Grayleaf mewed before he left towards the nursery, a deep hole dug in the ground that was covered by a bramble thicket at the entrance.
Lightstar didn't feel hungry, just tired so she padded off to her den, a hollowed out tree stump with vines covering the entrance.
Lightstar entered the leader's den and layed down in it with a yawn. Lightstar closed her eyes and within a few heartbeats, she fell asleep in her den under the bright, setting, full moon.
~§~
Lightstar opened her eyes, one green, one blue and saw that she was in a beautiful, peaceful clearing surrounded by tall pine trees. There was a quarter-moon hanging in the sky and Lightstar saw a pool reflecting the moon.
She slowly padded to the pool and looked into it and at the moon. The cool grass felt calming and nice under Lightstar's paws. Just then, a bitter sharp sent flooded over her.
Suddenly, a massive black and ginger creature appeared in the pool, replacing the moon with it's dark shape.
It let out a low growl and Lightstar recognized the black creature. A dog? Lightstar thought confused.
Out of nowhere, the dog jumped out of the pool, water drops dripping from it's black and ginger pelt as it tackled Lightstar to the ground.
Before Lightstar could do anything the dog scratched her snout with it's sharp claws. Blood spattered from her wound and Lightstar felt sharp pain from her muzzle.
The dog bent it's head down to Lightstar's then, to her surprise, the dog spoke.
"The sky's life shall be destroyed and the ground's death needs to take it's place. The flying pond will help prove death to have meaning. If not, there will be only destruction among all"
Lightstar was astonished by this and didn't have time to react before the dog quickly struck Lightstar's neck with it's teeth.
~§~
Lightstar woke with a jolt and scrambled up in her den. She looked around fiercely for the dog then realized she was back in her den and the FireClan camp.
Her pulse was racing and her breath was fast. She let out a heavy breath then layed down with a thud.
"What a dream, it felt so real...was what the dog said, a prophecy from StarClan? If it was, why did they have a dog tell me?" Lightstar mumbled to herself.
"Lightstar?"
Lightstar lifted her head and looked toward the entrance to her den at the sudden voice. She recognized Grayleaf's voice and scent.
"Come in," Lightstar told him.
"Good, you're awake. You were-" He stopped aburuptly. "Lightstar, are you alright?" Grayleaf asked as he entered her den.
"Yes, just a bad dream is all. A really bad dream," Lightstar replied slowing her breath. Grayleaf put a comforting tail around Lightstar's shoulder.
"What was it about?" Grayleaf asked. Lightstar didn't know what to say, she didn't want anyone to know about what the dog said until she knew what it meant for sure.
"A dog. A dog attacked and killed me in the dream." That was all Lightstar decided to tell.
"Well don't worry. The dog won't be a problem to us. Remember how we would always take down the toughest of predators and the fastest of prey as apprentices?" Grayleaf jokingly mewed.
Lightstar knew he was trying to help her feel better and it was working. Grayleaf had a great talent of making Lightstar happy when things were bad.
"Well I don't know about that, you were the one who always hid behind a tree every time someone mentioned a fox." Lightstar let out a mrrow of laughter.
"Well, I was just seeing if they were there! You never know where they could be hiding!" Grayleaf defended sarcastically.
Lightstar's odd eyes sparkled with amusement. She fondly remembered when she and Grayleaf were apprentices and was glad they were still best friends.
Lightstar saw the bright sun shining through the vines covering the entrance to her den. Then a thought came to her mind."How long until sunhigh?" Lightstar asked.
"It is sunhigh," Grayleaf told her.
"I've got to do the ceremony," Lightstar mewed standing up. She wanted this moment with Grayleaf to last, but she needed to do her duties as leader.
"Oh, right. That's actually why I came here, to remind you."
Lightstar shook clumps of moss out of her calico fur. She had almost forgot the dog and the dream, almost.
She walked through the vines and out of her den onto the sandy ground of the FireClan camp. Lightstar felt the warm sun on her calico fur. She then turned to and climbed up on top of the stump that made her den.
Just then, a hunting patrol made up of Cedarfoot, Shortpaw, Wetwhisker and Lionclaw came through the entrance of the camp, carrying fresh kill.
They saw that Lightstar was on top of the stump, ready to announce something. They quickly put the prey in the fresh kill pile and sat beneath the stump. Lightstar gave a yowl to start the meeting.
"All cats old enough to bask in the sun, join here beneath the Sun-Trunk for a Clan meeting!" She yowled. Cats came out of their dens and sat in front of the Sun-Trunk. Lightstar started the meeting once everyone was sitting in front of her.
"Clawkit, Thornkit, Longkit and Bellkit!" The four small tom-kits, one ginger, one white with rust colored patchtes, one white with light brown patches and one beige stepped forward, their pelts shining and well groomed in the bright sun. They sat down in front of the Sun-Trunk. Lightstar continued with a glimmer in her eyes.
"You four have reached the age of six moons and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on until you receive your warrior names, Clawkit, you will be known as Clawpaw! Your mentor will be Wetwhisker!" The blue-gray she~cat stepped forward and sat in front of Clawpaw. Lightstar then continued.
"I hope Wetwhisker will pass down all that she knows on to you. Wetwhisker, you are ready to take on an apprentice. You will be the mentor of Clawpaw." Wetwhisker touched noses with her new apprentice and Lightstar continued with the ceremony.
"Thornkit, you will be known as Thornpaw! Your mentor will be Lionclaw!" Lionclaw stepped forward to sit in front of his new apprentice, dark copper eyes proud.
"I hope Lionclaw will pass down all that he knows onto you. Lionclaw, you are ready for an apprentice. You will be the mentor of Thornpaw." Lionclaw bent down his large head and touched noses with Thornpaw.
"Longkit, you will be known as Longpaw! Your mentor will be Stormstep!" The gray and white tom, Stormstep padded forward and sat in front of Longpaw, happiness gleaming in his eyes.
"I hope Stormstep will pass down all that he knows onto you. Stormstep, you are ready for an apprentice. You will be the mentor of Longpaw." Stormstep touched noses with his new apprentice.
"And lastly, Bellkit, you will be known as Bellpaw! Your mentor will be Smallfang!" The long-furred, black she~cat walked forward to sit in front of Bellpaw.
"I hope Smallfang will pass down all that she knows onto you. Smallfang, you are ready for an apprentice. You will be the mentor of Bellpaw." Bellpaw reached up, a gleam showing in his dark amber eyes as he touched noses with his mentor.
For a moment, Lightstar thought she saw worry in Smallfang's eyes, but Lightstar decided that she just imagined it. The Clan called out the new apprentices' names happily.
"Clawpaw! Thornpaw! Longpaw! Bellpaw!" Lightstar also chanted out the four cats' new names. She was very happy to have new apprentices and future warriors in the Clan. She fondly remembered her apprentice ceremony.
Lightstar noticed that Leafheart, Clawpaw's mother and Silverwing, Thornpaw, Longpaw and Bellpaw's mother, were calling out their kits' names not only in happiness, but pride as well.
Once the cheers faded away Lightstar continued with something else she had to cover. "I hope these four new apprentices grow up to be fine, strong young warriors. Now, before we get on with today, I have something quick to announce. Yesterday at the gathering, no RainClan cats showed up to the gathering," Lightstar announced.
Boulderstar was the leader of RainClan and he and Lightstar were the closest to each other out of all the leaders. The cats that were gathered in the clearing started to murmur to each other.
"I can't help, but feel as though something bad has happened to RainClan. The patrols that patrol around the RainClan border, please take extra caution and try to see if you can scent anything suspicious. Also try to see if you can find any RainClan patrols. If any of you find any information about RainClan let me know immediately." Lightstar gave a nod and figured that was all she wanted and had to say. "That is all," She mewed once more then jumped off the Sun-Trunk.
Then she again remembered the dream she had. Lightstar was so confused, she couldn't tell if it was a prophecy from StarClan and she didn't want to tell anyone until she knew for sure if it was or not. Lightstar couldn't help, but think about the huge teeth, the menacing growl and the burning eyes that wanted nothing but blood.
