Chapter 21

Foxshade's POV

Foxshade lay awake, listening to the sounds of the night. Night brought almost no relief to the sweltering heat, falling like a suffocating blanket over the forest. As he peered through the leaves of the den he saw a cat slip through the camp towards the exit. He raised his head and saw a flash of ginger. Sunflare! Getting to his paws he slipped silently out of the den. The cat had already left the camp. As Foxshade tracked him he seemed to be headed for the RockClan border. Then several things happened at once. Foxshade leaped forward to confront the cat. A monster came rushing past them. A loud yowl echoed around the forest and a cat yelled, "Rainpaw!" Foxshade faced a shocking scene. It was Flamepaw, not Sunflare who he had tracked. A huddled body lay on the Thunderpath, Mousepaw and a silver grey cat were standing over the body. "What is going on here?!?!" Demanded Foxshade.
"Rainpaw-Rainpaw ran over the T-Thunderpath." Sniffed Mousepaw.
"And what are you two doing here with a bunch of RockClan cats?!" He snapped.
"Please! Yell at me later. Help him!"
Foxshade padded over to the body. It was still and cold. "Too late." He murmured. He turned on the the silver cat again. "What's your name?"
"Dewpaw." She whispered.
"Go home and tell them what happened. You two!" He turned on Flamepaw and Mousepaw. "You can come with me." Dewpaw padded over to Flamepaw.
"Look, maybe we should stop seeing each other."
"What?!" Flamepaw meowed.
"I-I-I don't want to see you anymore. It's for the greater good."
"I love you." He protested. Dewpaw glanced at Foxshade who gave her a hard look.
"I'm not going to meet you anymore." She mewed, eyes pools of pain. "Goodbye Flamepaw. May StarClan light your path." She turned and dragged Rainpaw into her territory, leaving Flamepaw staring after her, tears trickling silently down his cheeks.

"We've been meeting there almost every night for a moon." Mousepaw finished. Stormstar watched them gravely. Sunflare and Gingerheart sat watching. Foxshade had told Stormstar what had happened and he had called Mousepaw's mentor to find out what the apprentices had been doing. "You relize you both have severely broken the warrior code? What should we do with you? Sunflare?"
"Don't make them warriors is what I think." Sunflare said calmly.
"What?" Foxshade leaped to his paws. "You can't do that!"
"Why did you do this?" Stormstar asked the apprentices, ignoring Foxshade's outburst.
"I loved her!" Flamepaw burst out. "I loved her..."
"This is why things like this mustn't go this far." Stormstar mewed. "You're punishments will be up to your mentors." He flicked his tail to dismiss them.
"You can start by cleaning out the elders den, check them for ticks, bring fresh bedding." He ordered the to apprentices. Flamepaw and Mousepaw obeyed without question. He watched them go, he understood what it felt like to lose the one you love, he had almost lost Greyear. Still, that was no excuse for what they had done.

A yowl broke the silence of the camp. He ran towards the sound. Greyear lay, yowling in pain in the nursery. "What wrong?" Demanded Foxshade of Fluffytail.
"She's kitting. She'll be fine." Fluffytail informed him. "Go get a stick." She ordered Frostpaw who scuttled away. Foxshade crouched beside Greyear whispering comfortingly. With a great heave a small bundle slid out. "A tom!" Fluffytail meowed triumphantly. "You're doing great Greyear." She told her. With another yowl the second kit was born, a little she cat. Greyear purred as the two kits moved towards her belly, smelling milk. "This one is Silverkit." She mewed, touching her tail to the she-cat.
"And this one is Sunkit." Foxshade purred, licking the tom. As he left the den he bumped into Nightsoul. "Oh, hi Foxshade." She mewed, looking embarrassed.
"What up?" He asked.
She dropped her voice to a whisper, "I'm expecting kits!" She meowed happily.
"Snowdust's?"
She flushed, "Of course."
"Thats great! I'm so glad you two found each other." Foxshade congratulated.
"Thanks." Nightsoul mewed, looking at her paws. "I'm not moving to nursery quite yet, but I'm gonna check it out today." She brushed past him.
"Say hello to Silverkit and Sunkit." He called after her.
"Who?"
"My kits," he purred happily.
"Congratulations!" She exclaimed. "Greyear's ok?"
"She's fine, just tired. Anyway, I'm on hunting patrol." He mewed, leaving the nursery.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two moons had passed since Greyear had had her kits. They had been tumbling around in the clearing, letting out squeals of happiness. Foxshade was out in the forest hunting. As he crept through the trees he heard the sound of many cats, mewing quietly. Intruders! He dropped into a crouch he crept forward but suddenly, "Oof!" He grunted as a heavy weight dropped down on top of him. "I got one!" His capture yowled. He felt himself being dragged into a clearing. Around the clearing stood loads of rouge cats. Foxshade was thrown roughly to the center. A cat pushed his way through the throng. He had ginger fur, like Foxshade's and amber eyes. "We meet again." He snarled at Foxshade. It was Beetlekit.
